    The Colours Part 1: The Regular Battalions By Lieutenant General J. P. Riley CB DSO PhD MA FRHistS 1. The Earliest Days At the time of the raising of Lord Herbert’s Regiment in March 1689,i it was usual for a regiment of foot to hold ten Colours. This number corre- sponded to the number of companies in the regiment and to the officers who commanded these companies although the initial establishment of Herbert’s Regiment was only eight companies. We have no record of the issue of any Colours to Herbert’s Regiment – and probably the Colo- nel paid for their manufacture himself as he did for much of the dress and equipment of his regiment. What we do know however is that each Colour was the rallying point for the company in battle and the symbol of its esprit. Colours were large – generally six feet square although no regulation on size yet existed – so that they could easily be seen in the smoke of a 17th Century battlefield for we must remember that before the days of smokeless powder, obscuration was a major factor in battle. So too was the ability of a company to keep its cohesion, deliver effec- tive fire and change formation rapidly either to attack, defend, or repel cavalry. A company was made up of anywhere between sixty and 100 men, with three officers and a varying number of sergeants, corporals and drummers depending on the actual strength. About one-third of the men by this time were armed with the pike, two-thirds with the match- lock musket.

The issues in which it was published are: Issue Date Pages 48 November 1832 414 to 420 49 December 1832 565 to 571 50 January 1833 130 to 136 51 February 1833 273 to 280 It is the earliest known printed history of the Regiment, and was used by Richard Cannon in his Historical Record of The Twenty-Third Regiment, or The Royal Welsh Fusiliers; containing an Account of the Formation of the Regiment in 1689, and of its subsequent Services to 1850 , published by Parker, Furnivall & Parker in 1850. Cannon, writing over 15 years after 1832, made some corrections to the text. He also brought the history up to date. The next history, published in 1889 – Major Rowland Broughton-Mainwaring’s Historical Record of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, late the Twenty-Third Regiment, or Royal Welsh Fusiliers (The Prince of Wales̓ s Own Royal Regiment of Welsh Fuzeliers); containing an Account of the Formation of the Regiment in 1689, and of its subsequent Services to 1889 , Hatchards, 1889 – copied Cannon up to 1850. This US Journal history therefore forms the basis of the 1850 and 1889 histories. Without a detailed check, it is not known what changes were made to the 1832–33 text. The text which follows is not a completely accurate copy of the original.

Before 1881, the various bodies of volunteers that had been raised during the Napoleonic Wars and that had persisted throughout the 19th Century as unpaid associations, were for the first time placed on an organised basis by the War Office. These bodies and their Colours are not recorded here since their affiliation was local, not regimental; details of these regiments and their Colours are in Geddes, Part III, page 212 et seq. Even so, they retained a distinct identity from the militia, for they represented a very different military tradition. Until the Great War, the Volunteers remained an object of suspicion from the regular army and the militia; in the Royal Welch Fusiliers their officers were refused permission to wear the Flash and were derided as “dog-shooters”. With the formation of the Territorial Force in 1908, the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers became the 4th (Denbighshire) Battalion (TF); the 2nd (Volunteer Battalion) became the 5th (Flintshire) Battalion (TF); and the 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion became the 6th (Caernarvonshire and Anglesey) Battalion (TF). The 5th (Volunteer) Battalion of the South Wales Borderers was transferred to the Royal Welch Fusiliers and became the 7th (Merioneth and Montgomery) Battalion (TF). As Volunteers, these battalions had carried no Colours, however once the TF had been formed, Colours were authorised once again the separate tradition denied them the battle honours earned by the regular battalions of the Regiment, which had been granted to the militia.
