Ed è proprio così: lassù sono concentrati ben 2.500 anni, tanti ne corrono dalle tracce dei primi abitanti che risalgono al quinto secolo a.C. ad oggi. Per farlo suggeriamo di incominciare con la funicolare che da Bergamo Bassa (la stazione di partenza è dal viale Vittorio Emanuele) porta alla Città Alta. Un breve percorso che consente di osservare da un punto di vista particolare lo sviluppo di Bergamo: la città moderna al piano che si è sviluppata soprattutto negli ultimi decenni e quella antica in alto, circondata dalla formidabile cerchia di mura che Venezia fece costruire nel ‘500. Una volta arrivato, all’uscita il visitatore è accolto da uno spazio scenografico che sembra formato da quinte teatrali. Si tratta del Mercato delle Scarpe, una piazza che in passato fu un importante nodo di traffico: vi giungevano le strade provenienti da est, ossia da Venezia (via Porta Dipinta) e da LA Rocca di Bergamo ovest, ossia da Milano (via San Giacomo).
