Landmarks Preservation Commission November 4, 1987; Designation List 194 LP-1311 BROOKS ATKINSON THEATER (originally Mansfield Theater), 256-262 West 47th Street, Manhattan. Built 1925-26; architect Herbert J. Krapp. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1018, Lot 57. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Brooks Atkinson Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (I tern No. 7). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. Two witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has · received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Brooks Atkinson Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built during the mid-1920s, the Brooks Atkinson was among the half-dozen theaters constructed by the Chanin Organization, to the designs of Herbert J. Krapp, that typified the development of the Times Square/Broadway theater district. Founded by Irwin S. Chanin, the Chanin organization was a major construction company in New York. During the 1920s, Chanin branched out into the building of theaters, and helped create much of the ambience of the heart of the theater district. -

The Brooklyn College Foundation Annual Report, 2004–2005 On the cover: Architectural plan for realization of the campus design envisioned by Brooklyn College’s founding architect, Randolph Evans, in 1935. The plan proposes new entrances to Roosevelt and James Halls, a new West Quad to mirror the existing East Quad, and a new building to anchor the entire campus west of Bedford Avenue. The West Quad Project is one of several ambitious plans the College has launched to build a modern, student-centered campus conducive to learning and scholarship. Dear Friends of Brooklyn College At Brooklyn College in the last year, we have been busy building— not only the physical campus, but also the educational environment that best encourages vigorous learning and scholarship. Our priorities result largely from initiatives we launched during the first five years of my presidency—and particularly within the last twelve months. These include expanding the campus, renewing the natural sciences, and broadening our fiscal base. The physical transformation of the campus continues apace. We have doubled the size of the Morton and Angela Topfer Library Café, and it is open again 24/7. Over the summer, we renovated and modernized eleven lecture halls in Ingersoll Hall. We move ahead with the West Quad Project, laying out a new quadrangle and pouring the foundation for a new building. We have begun a major rebuilding of our science facilities and our science curriculum. The project will proceed in two stages. First, Roosevelt Hall will be transformed into a science building; then we will renovate Ingersoll Hall. The science faculty meanwhile has been discussing and defining the shape science teaching and research should take at the College. -

The new law thrillers have the same ingredients as those dependable old World War II action films: various ethnic and personality types who fight with each other when they're not fighting the enemy. The law movies have one considerable advantage: the female characters participate fully in all the action, instead of just staying home and writing letters to the front. In "The Firm," a labyrinthine 153-minute film by Sydney Pollack, Tom Cruise plays Mitch McDeere, a poor boy who is ashamed of his humble origins now that he has graduated from Harvard Law fifth in his class. He gets offers from the top law firms in New York and Chicago, but finally settles on a smaller firm headquartered in Memphis. His decision is salary-driven; he sees money as security, although later in the film he is unable to say how rich he'd have to be to feel really secure. Mitch moves to Memphis with his wife, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn, the peculiar psychiatrist in "Basic Instinct"). They are provided with a house and a shiny new Mercedes - both bugged, as it turns out. And gradually McDeere begins to realize his new law firm is in league with the devil. An FBI man spills the beans: only a quarter of the clients are above-board, and the rest are thieves, scoundrels and money-launderers, with the firm's partners acting as bagmen shipping the money to offshore banks. -

The Bureaucrat As Movie Hero
STRANGE BUT TRUE TALES FROM HOLLYWOOD: THE BUREAUCRAT AS MOVIE HERO Mordecai Lee Department of Governmental Affairs University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Susan C Paddock Department of Professional Development and Applied Studies University of Wisconsin-Madison Abstract Popular culture reflects the hostility to government and bureaucracy that is deeply embedded in American history, society and culture. Therefore, movies that depict evil government or villainous bureaucrats are relatively common. Are there any movies that defy this stereotype? As an exploratory research effort, the authors sought to identify any movies that depict admirable, even heroic, bureaucrats. Has the movie-going public ever seen a good public administrator? Using a wide variety of sources and exploratory research methodologies, the authors were able to identify 20 movies that presented positive characterizations of government managers. All were men and most were involved in a uniformed service. Notwithstanding the small number of bureaucratic heroes in movies, public administrationists can proudly identify themselves with these Hollywood crumbs. Faculty may wish to use these 20 movies as visual examples of the courage sometimes needed to be a moral and ethical public administrator. Finally, readers are invited to submit to the authors nominations of additional films that meet the criteria used in the article in order to enhance the ongoing comprehensiveness of the list.
