THE BALL IS FLAT THE BALL IS FLAT: A STUDY OF INSTITUTIONAL RACISM IN FOOTBALL By ERIC POOL, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Eric Pool, September 2010 MASTER OF ARTS (2010) McMaster University (English) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: The Ball is Flat: A Study ofInstitutional Racism in Football AUTHOR: Eric Pool, B.A. (University of Waterloo) SUPERVISOR: Professor Chandrima Chakraborty NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 127 ii Abstract: This project examines the ways in which the global mobility of players has unsettled the traditional nationalistic structure of football and the anxious responses by specific football institutions as they struggle to protect their respective political and economic hegemonies over the game. My intention is to expose the recent institutional exploitation of football's "cultural power" (Stoddart, Cultural Imperialism 650) and ability to impassion and mobilize the masses in order to maintain traditional concepts of authority and identity. The first chapter of this project will interrogate the exclusionary selection practices of both the Mexican and the English Football Associations. Both institutions promote ethnoracially singular understandings of national identity as a means of escaping disparaging accusations of "artificiality," thereby protecting the purity and prestige of the nation, as well as the profitability of the national brand. The next chapter will then turn its attention to FIFA's proposed 6+5 policy, arguing that the rule is an institutional effort by FIF A to constrain and control the traditional structure of football in order to preserve the profitability of its highly "mediated and commodified spectacle" (Sugden and Tomlinson, Contest 231) as well as assert its authority and autonomy in the global realm.

KAPLAN GALLEYSPROOFS2 3/17/2015 9:57 AM UEFA FINANCIAL FAIRPLAY REGULATIONS AND EUROPEAN UNION ANTITRUST LAW COMPLICATIONS INTRODUCTION European Football1 is not just a sport to the rest of the world. Each match is more than just a game. A match can and has represented old battles that never die completely. The Celtic–Rangers rivalry is more than a cross-town rivalry, but a representation of the unfinished political fight over the Protestant Reformation.2 The Barcelona–Real Madrid rivalry represents a long-running nationalist fight between Castilian and Catalonian Spaniards.3 Celtic’s long running rivalry with Rangers Football Club (FC) is just another part of the centuries-old rivalry between Northern Irish Catholics and Protestants.4 While one’s club is a representation of his or her nation and tribe, it is also a business, as shown by the globalization of the sport.5 And just like any business, occasionally there are financial issues.

The U17 men's international team had success in getting to the Elite stage of the U17 European Championship and performed admirably against Belgium and Netherlands, two of the best teams in Europe at this age. • 1 Introduction: the Global Football League 2 the Network League
Notes 1 Introduction: The Global Football League 1. When Ferguson was appointed, the club had not won the league since 1967/68 season and in that gap had only won three F.A. Cups. Hence, Fergusons’ spell at the club is universally regarded as its most successful period. 2. Although the loss of value of the sterling currency – relative to particularly the euro – and Spain’s tax-break ‘Beckham law’ (see Valasco and Garcia Perrote 2009) may have altered this position. 2 The Network League: Global Brand Clubs, ‘Game 39’ and Transnational Spaces 1. In the 1992/93 season, BSkyB showed 60 live games at a cost of £640,000 per game. By 2009, BSkyB and Setanta were screening 138 live games per season, which worked out at £4.7m per live match. 2. The aggregate points have been drawn from the (ordinal) yearly points totals of each of the 13 seasons that have been taken into account. In such instances, the first-ranked club in each given season is awarded 20 points, with the twentieth-ranked club awarded one point. Thus, 260 was the maxi- mum number of points that were achievable. 3. Principally high player wages, but also a ‘mortgage-style’ debt, which they had accrued in order to purchase higher quality players. 4. According to Wilson (2007), the EPL’s overseas broadcasting deals have doubled in value with every new set of three year contracts since 2001. For instance, the 2001–04 deal was worth £178m and the 2004–07 contracts were valued at £325m. 5. Carlin (2004) also argues that a Japanese response to the transfer was that a major TV station immediately snapped up the rights to live broadcast Spanish league games and paid €8m for a thirty-second spot Beckham did to promote their channel.

SPORTS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2013 Mackay vows to Photo of the day stay at Cardiff LONDON: Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay insisted yes- terday he’d no intention of resigning from the Premier League club following the exit of assistant Iain Moody. MacKay’s future at the Welsh capital side was called into question last week when Moody, who’d worked with him at Watford and was responsible for helping the manager recruit new players, left. Cardiff also announced that Alisher Apsalyamov, a 23- year-old from Kazakhstan, reported to be a friend of the son of the club’s Malaysian owner Vincent Tan, and with no known significant previous experience in football, had replaced Moody in an acting capacity. This led to specula- tion that Mackay might quit. However, the Scot, in his first public comments about Moody’s exit during a news con- ference yesterday ahead of today’s match away to Chelsea, said: “As far as I am concerned, again for clarification, under no circumstances was I asked to resign and at no time have I thought of resigning from the football club.” Mackay defended Moody by saying: “Iain is an absolute class act as far as I am concerned. He has done a very impressive job for the football club. “In one of the periods of success at the football club, which we have been in over the last two-and-a-half years, he has had a huge part to Competitor performs at Red Bull Mini Drome in Seoul, South Korea. play in the restructuring of my squad.
