Annagh 2006.Pdf Christmas Greetings nce again as winter sets in and Christmas approaches, we are reminded that it is O"Annagh Magazine" time again. I welcome this edition of Annagh and I con- gratulate the editorial committee on their commitment and dedication, and thank them for being so generous with their time and talents in producing year after year a magazine of the highest quality. It is great to see so many articles by so many people on a wide variety of topics, and I’m sure Annagh will provide many hours of enjoy- able reading for Ballyhaunis people both at home and abroad. Last August saw the passing of Canon Patrick Costelloe, who for thirty- two years played a very important role in the life of Ballyhaunis. He was the founder, and for sixteen years the first Principal of St. Patrick’s College, and after that became Parish Priest in Ballyhaunis, a post he held for a further sixteen years until his retire- ment in 1993. May his gentle soul rest in the peace of the Lord. This year marks an important milestone both for our parish and the dio- cese with the holding of the Diocesan Assembly, which was a consultative process to plan for the future of the diocese. During the year many meetings were held throughout the diocese, in fact it is estimated that over 2,500 people attended meetings preparing for the Assembly. It is called a "Future Full of Hope" and we pray that the implementation of its findings will give hope to all the people of our diocese, and strengthen our commitment to our faith and our church as we move ahead. Ballyhaunis now has a population of many cultures and many nationalities, all living and working harmoniously together. Through the pages of Annagh Magazine, I want to wish all Ballyhaunis people living abroad, and all residents of our parish whatever their nationality, a very happy and holy Christmas and every blessing in the New Year. It is exactly two decades since 24-year-old Aidan McAnespie was shot dead by a soldier at a permanent border checkpoint at Aughnacloy in 1988. The victim, who had no criminal record and was not a member of any paramilitary organisation, had been walking to a local GAA match when he was shot in the back from an estimated range of 300 metres. The soldier who fired the fatal shot claimed his hands had been wet and had slipped onto the trigger of the heavy sub-machine gun while he had been moving it around the checkpoint’s look-out post. The soldier, whose identity has never been publicised, was fined for negligent discharge of a weapon and given a medical discharge from the army.

My intention is to expose the recent institutional exploitation of football's "cultural power" (Stoddart, Cultural Imperialism 650) and ability to impassion and mobilize the masses in order to maintain traditional concepts of authority and identity. The first chapter of this project will interrogate the exclusionary selection practices of both the Mexican and the English Football Associations. The next chapter will then turn its attention to FIFA's proposed 6+5 policy, arguing that the rule is an institutional effort by FIF A to constrain and control the traditional structure of football in order to preserve the profitability of its highly "mediated and commodified spectacle" (Sugden and Tomlinson, Contest 231) as well as assert its authority and autonomy in the global realm.
