Lanterns are also available in solid brass for an additional up-charge of 20%. There is a minimum requirement for brass orders of 6 items. All lanterns are unlacquered unless otherwise specified. _ 2) Electric lanterns are U.S. wired. Please specify single candle, double candle, triple candle, or single bulb from the top. Please specify medium or candelabra base socket. If candle, please specify white or drip type candle cover. 3) For gas lanterns, please specify gas, switch type and burner type. Gas Burners are available for natural gas or propane gas. Switches available are manual, electric, and solar sensor. Burners available are single open flame (2000 BTU/Hr), double open flame (4000 BTU/Hr.), single mantle (1,150 BTU/Hr), double mantle (2300 BTU/Hr), triple mantle (3400 BTU/Hr), and where applicable a pilot consumes 400 BTU/Hr. FFD (Flame failure device) is available for commercial and interior installations at an additional price. All gas fixtures are supplied with 1/4 NPT taper thread adapter for your gas line connection. Actual gas supply line sizing will be dependent on distance run. 1/4” is adequate for very short lines. 3/8” is usually recommended, and larger supply may be required for very long distances. Please specify natural gas or propane. If not specified, natural gas burners will be supplied. 4) All lantern accessories are cast aluminum unless otherwise specified, and are supplied in a satin black painted finish. Please specify prime finish only of you want another finish. All prices quoted are F.O.B. Atlanta. 6) All glazing will be supplied clear unless otherwise specified. 7) All fixtures are made to order. Those Magnificent Chandeliers We are blessed with a beautiful church, “a model of elegance and good taste” The Mecklenburg Times announced in April 1895 in anticipation of the re-opening of the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte following an extensive and quite expensive (just over $30,000) rebuilding and remodeling of the church. One of the new and much anticipated features of the 1894-1895 remodeling was the installation of three very large and exquisitely ornate chandeliers. “The First Presbyterian Church is to have the handsomest chandeliers in the State”, revealed the Daily Charlotte Observer in a sneak preview in 1894. Prior to the remodeling, First Presbyterian had been regarded as one the most dimly lit churches in Charlotte, having only 39 lights in total. The Session decided as early as 1888 that new lighting, and lighting with electricity, was highly desirable and some electric lights were added at that time to supplement the gas lights. Electric lighting, though a relatively new technology (it wasn’t until 1883 that the first church in the United States was wired for electricity), was much easier to use and much safer than gas. Electrical lighting was rapidly replacing gas lighting across the country. The chandeliers that were going to adorn First Presbyterian actually had dual fuel capability, thus combining the new technology of electrical lighting with the more proven technology of gas lighting. A fail-safe system seemingly. Each of the chandeliers had 72 lights, 36 electric and 36 gas, for a total potential of 216 lights. Dim lighting at First Presbyterian was going to be a feature of the past.

Andrew Basilica, where many rests (e.g. lamps, pipes) are still visible. This gad-light plant is a great example to analyze the way an eighteenth century industrial device had been installed (often with many difficulties) over the fragile monumental structure of such a building, determining a sudden modification in the perception of the great architectonic interior of the Basilica and the decay of its marble floor and frescoes painted walls. Nowadays, the restoration purposes of the Basilica interior, meets the historical value of this gas-light plant which has to be considered as a more recent step in the five-century construction history of the Basilica and, thus, has be preserved itself.
