Phone: 624-5707 General Course Description The course presents contemporary Polish cinema from 1945 to the present. Concepts will be studied in their historical, political, philosophical, and aesthetic perspective. We will examine the important national themes in modern Polish cinema, relating them to the history of Poland and Eastern Europe. The main trends (schools, movements) in Polish cinema will be examined such as the so-called PolishSchool and the Cinema of Moral Concern. The works of most important modern Polish film-makers will be examined, including the works of Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Munk, Agnieszka Holland, Roman Polanski, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Wladyslaw Pasikowski, Leszek Wosiewicz, and Ryszard Bugajski. Films to be examined may be divided into three general groups 1. Films representing post-war history and, more specifically, films covering important social and political transformations, but made after the fact. These are sometimes called revisionist films in search of historical truth, previously distorted by political ideology. 2. Films dealing with World War II. We will look at different ways in which the war is treated by film-makers over the course of the post-war period. 3. The final group of films is chosen purely on the basis of artistic merit. The role of film as an art form will be examined during the different periods of the post-World-War-Two era. -

Kamila Żyto Department of Media and Audiovisual Culture University of Łódź Film in the Shadow of History Józef Lejtes and Polish School National history has always been one of the crucial topics in Polish cinema. Almost from the beginning of its existence films have been de- picting storms of historic changes. Why does the situation look like that? The answer could be either obvious or not easy at all. At first, it is worth to realize that Polish history was cruel, painful, dramatic and complicated, which is of course not a convincing, final argument. Many countries expe- rienced cruelty of fate, were forced to struggle for their independence, suf- fered from inconveniences of wars. But expectations and the role attributed to fine arts deeply rooted in national variant of romanticism are typically “Polish”. Creating and upholding national identity, which for years was in danger of disappearing, seems to be considered as an act of courage and the way of manifesting patriotism. As a result, one of the main aims of literature, painting and then, from the beginning of 20th century, cinema was to support “spirit of Polish character”. Paradoxically, or maybe as a con- sequence of “being on duty”, film directors quite often rebel against roman- tic paradigm and instead of paying tribute to the motherland by guarding national unity, they were trying to deconstruct and show the weakness of national mythology, which was glorifying lonely and utopian heroism of individuals. As a result, film directors, whose works will be discussed as case studies, were in some respect the heirs of literary heritage of romanticism aware of its power and long lasting influence. -

Andrzej Wajda’s A Generartion and Man of Marble By Fabian Schuppert Spring 2006 Issue of KINEMA ANDRZEJ WAJDA’S A GENERATION AND MAN OF MARBLE FROM A POLITICAL PERSPECTIVE ’The cinema does not exist in a sublime state of innocence, untouched by the world; it also has a political content, whether conscious or unconscious, hidden or overt.’(1) Andrew Sarris A PIECE of art is always produced in concrete socio-political circumstances; it is a social product. Undoubt- edly art does not come into being or exists in an absolute, free state of self-sufficiency. But to postulate that art is at the same time always political, is quite a different affair. What exactly does it imply to saythat art, or as in the case of Andrew Sarris and this article, that film is political? This paper is going to inquire into the political role, function and use of film. The aim of this paper is to give a short overview on selected theories on the political nature of art and film, before moving on and applying these concepts to two films by Andrzej Wajda. This paper will analyse Wajda’s A Generation (Pokolenie, 1955) and Man of Marble (Człowiek z marmuru, 1976) from a political point of view. Both films were produced in Poland during the times of the communist regime, but under quite different conditions, and with quite different objectives. This article will not only deal with film analysis and interpretation but also critically look at the circumstance of production, which influenced the film: the concrete socio-political situation, including state pressure and censorship. -

Popiół i diament przyniósł mu nagrodę krytyki w Wenecji w 1959 r. Andrzeja Wajdę wychował polski patriotyczny dom i szkoła. Ojciec jego był zawodowym oficerem, matka nauczycielką. Dzieciństwo spędził w prowincjonalnych garnizonowych miasteczkach. Miał zaledwie 13 lat gdy wybuchła wojna i ojciec ruszył by bronić ojczyzny. Nie zobaczył go więcej, ale dom był zawsze pełen pamiątek, jego pułkowych odznak, jego Krzyża Virtutu Militari, fotogrfii w mudurze i z szablą. W czasie okupcji Andrzej uczył się w Radomiu na tajnych kompletach. W 1942 r. złożył przysięgę swemu dowódcy w podziemiu. Matka drżała o jego życie. Wcześnie ujawniły się jego zamiłowania artystyczne i zdolności malarskie. Wnet po zakończeniu wojny miał swoją pierwszą wystawę malarską. Czas mu było wyrwać się na szerszy świat. Przeniósł się do Krakowa, gdzie rozpoczął studia malarskie na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych. -

Memory is a phenomenon that is directly related to the present; our perception of the past is always influenced by the present. The aim of the presentation is to examine how the images of Warsaw in the time of Uprising of 1944 have been changing. Key words: The Warsaw Uprising, Warsaw, city-text, inhabitants, cultural memory, museum, memorialism, narration * * * Powstanie warszawskie jest jednym z kluczowych wydarzeń pozwalających zrozumieć nie tylko historię Warszawy czy Polski, ale również Europy Środkowej. Pamięć jest fenomenem bezpośrednio związanym z teraźniejszością; na naszą percepcję przeszłości zawsze wpływają obecne okoliczności. Celem artykułu jest zbadanie, jak zmieniały się obrazy Warszawy w czasie Powstania. Słowa kluczowe: powstanie warszawskie, Warszawa, miasto‒tekst, mieszkańcy, muzeum, memorializm, narracja. From the repressed memory to the cult of the Warsaw Rising The Warsaw Uprising was a dramatic effort to reclaim national sovereignty. It always stirs a lot of controversy among historians. Firstly, the decision of armed struggle is questioned. In the unequal struggle against the German occupier, close to 200 000 people died on the Polish side, mostly civilians. What about collective memory about The Warsaw Rising? Opinion poll conducted in 2003 among the Polish people1 on their knowledge and feelings about the Warsaw Uprising shows that their connotations are generally positive (even having in mind the fact that this revolt failed). -

Article Bodily Violence and Resistance in Wojtek Smarzowski’s Rose (Róża, 2011) ELŻBIETA OSTROWSKA, University of Alberta, Canada; email: [email protected] 38 DOI: 10.2478/bsmr-2018-0003 BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2018 / VOLUME 6 / ARTICLE ABSTRACT The article argues that Wojtek Smarzowski’s filmRose (Róża, Poland, 2011) undermines the dominant bi- gendered logic of screen death and suffering in the Polish films depicting the experience of World War II. In these films, there is a significant absence of images of female suffering and death, which is striking when compared to the abundant images of wounded and dying male bodies, usually represented as a lavish visual spectacle. This unrepresented female death serves as a ‘structuring absence’ that governs the systematic signifying practices of Polish cinema. Most importantly, it expels the female experience of World War II from the realm of history to the realm of the mythical. This representational regime has been established in the Polish national cinema during the 1950s, especially in Andrzej Wajda’s films, and is still proving its longevity. As the author argues, Smarzowski’s Rose is perhaps the most significant attempt to undermine this gendered cinematic discourse. Specifically, the essay explores the ways in which Smarzowski’s Rose departs from previous dominant modes of representation of the World War II experience in Polish cinema, especially its gendered aspect.1 Firstly, it examines how Rose abandons the generic conventions of both war film and historical drama and instead, utilises selected conventions of melodrama to open up the textual space in which to represent the female experience of historical events. -

It was the most spectacular event of the “Autumn of Nations”. It was also a very fitting symbol – a metaphor – for the fall of communism’s totalitarian system and for the reunification of Europe. Yet, the bringing down of the Berlin Wall was merely the final stage of a process that had been initiated nearly ten years earlier at the Gdansk Shipyards. In August 1980, as the result of a weeks-long workers’ strike, the ruling Polish United Workers Party agreed to the legalization of Solidarity, the first independent labour union in that part of Europe controlled by the Soviet Union. Solidarity was the first step towards freedom in the 40 years since the Red Army installed communist regimes throughout the Central European countries it had “liberated” during the war. -

Some films have been very controversial, and it is important to understand why. Is emotion itself, though often very intense, not ambivalent? This editorial is an impressionistic work on Andrzej Wajda’s output, predominantly emphasising its dramatic nature. The text presents the uniqueness of Andrzej Wajda’s creative work in such diverse forms of art as if they were one – his painting metamorphosed into film, drawing into screenplay, urban space into a theatre stage. Wajda is seen here not only as a director, but also as a contemporary dramatist, who creates the dramatic space of history’s traps, who dramatises the fate of the individual, and who interprets the drama of the philosophical stage. M u z y k a l i a III · Materiały konferencyjne 3 Od słowa do obrazu, czyli o powstaniu filmu Pasażerka Andrzeja Munka P a u l i n a K w i a t k o w s k a Film Andrzeja Munka Pasażerka nie jest ani pierwszą, ani też ostatnią artystyczną realizacją tekstu stworzonego przez Zofię Posmysz, która losy swojego utworu określiła, za Jerzym Pomianowskim, mianem swoistej „kariery tematu”. Warto pamiętać, że film poprzedzało słuchowisko radiowe oraz spektakl telewizyjny. W trakcie prac nad filmem ukazała się również powieść, przetłumaczona później na wiele języków; tekst ten wystawiano także na scenach teatralnych w Związku Radzieckim i Bułgarii, na koniec zaś zajęła się nim rosyjska opera, dla której Zofia Posmysz przygotowała libretto1. Warto zatem zastanowić się, co spowodowało, że właśnie ten utwór, jeden przecież z licznych poruszających tematykę obozową, stał się literackim pierwowzorem tak wielu różnych realizacji. W tym kontekście ciekawe jest przede wszystkim pytanie o to, jakie miejsce na gruncie literatury martyrologicznej zajmuje Pasażerka. Książki o hitlerowskich obozach zagłady czy, zawężając, o Auschwitz zaczęły być wydawane zaraz po wojnie; w zdecydowanej większości przypadków ich autorami byli więźniowie, którzy przetrwali pobyt w obozie. W tej sytuacji nie może dziwić fakt, że ich utwory przybierały najczęściej formę mniej lub bardziej fabularyzowanych pamiętników, których narratorem był sam autor. Nie chciałabym zajmować się tutaj dokładniejszą analizą poszczególnych utworów (wyczerpująco opracował tę tematykę chociażby Andrzej Werner w pierwszym rozdziale Zwyczajnej Apokalipsy), dodam tylko, że taką właśnie formę ma między innymi książka Seweryny Szmaglewskiej Dymy nad Birkenau czy Zofii Kossak- Szczuckiej Z otchłani. Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema Throughout North America
INTRODUCTION In December 2011, filmmaker Martin Scorsese traveled to Poland to accept an honorary doctor- al degree from The Polish National Film, Television, and Theatre School in Łódź. There, Mr. Scors- ese met with Jędrzej Sabliński (a digital restoration expert, now with DI Factory), and reviewed a list of new digital restorations of Polish films. In the months following this visit, with the help of The Film Foundation, the two men came up with the idea of a North American tour of a series of restored Polish cinema classics. From an extensive catalogue of digitally restored films, Mr. Scorsese chose twenty-one masterpieces. The Film Foundation executive director, Margaret Bodde then worked with Mr. Sabliński to develop the program and recommended Milestone Films as the North American distributor for the series. Milestone will be touring the 21-film retrospective Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema throughout North America. Premiering in New York City at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on February 5th, 2014, the series features films from some of Poland’s most accom- plished and lauded filmmakers, spanning the period from 1957–1987. Curated by Mr. Scorsese, each film has been digitally re-mastered and brilliantly restored on newly subtitled DCPs. It depicts the Solidarity labour movement and its first success in persuading the Polish government to recognize the workers' right to an independent union. The film continues the story of Maciej Tomczyk, the son of Mateusz Birkut, the protagonist of Wajda's earlier film, Man of Marble. Here, Maciej is a young worker involved in the anti-Communist labour movement, described as "the man who started the Gdańsk Shipyard strike", and a journalist working for the Communist regime's radio station, who is given a task of slandering Maciej. The young man is clearly intended as a parallel to Lech Wałęsa (who appears as himself in the movie). Man of Iron clarifies the ending of Man of Marble, which left the death of Mateusz Birkut ambiguous. Man of Iron explicitly states that Mateusz was killed in clashes at the shipyards in 1970.[2] Directed by Andrzej Wajda The film was made during the brief thaw in Communist censorship Written by Aleksander that appeared between the formation of Solidarity in August 1980 Ścibor-Rylski and its suppression in December 1981, and as such it is remarkably critical of the Communist regime.
