However, there is no clear cut path carved out for their entry other than through the Film Institutes established by the Government. There is always a need felt by the Production Houses to have trained film makers and technicians for quality film and Television productions. Considering this huge requirement of trained professionals many private institutes have mushroomed in various places. However these Institutes also lack the trained faculty in various departments of film making. This has prompted few graduates from Film and Television Institutes of India to come together and thus the Institute of Film and Video Technology was established with a sole objective of providing professional education in Cinema and Television Technology. The IFVT endeavors to take Cinema Education to the places where Cinema is not made and Cinema is not taught. IFVT opens a window of opportunities to those who have no access to the world of Cinema. OUR MISSION: To strive to give Cinema Education a Professional status Equivalent to other professional Degrees such as Medical, Engineering, Computers etc by providing a Bachelors degree in Cinema & Television with Master’s degree & PhD in cinema thereafter. FACILITIES AND SERVICES: IFVT draws its highly experienced faculty from internationally renowned Film Institutes and from the film industry. Apart from the permanent faculty, the IFVT has tie ups and arrangements with reputed artistes and technicians from the film world to train & share their experiences with the students. -

India Dominates MIFF, Wins Largest Number Of Awards In International Category India Dominates MIFF, Wins Largest Number Of Awards In International Category by B B Nagpal Senior Film Critic Makers of short or documentary films generally feel they are given the short shrift when they try to find finances for making their films, and are then treated to a step-son treatment by the government, the public service broadcaster Doordarshan, and the private television channels as far as distribution and exhibition goes. As a result, it is felt that people are no longer interested in short, documentary or animation films. But the large number of viewers that turned up at the Tenth Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation Films were enough to prove that the medium has its own niche viewership. And the ovation that the award-winners got also showed that their judgment did not differ very much from that of the juries. However, though every festival has some good and some bad films, the primary problem with MIFF is that the duration is just one week thus permitting only one show per film, and the number of films and variety of sections needs to be curtailed. The press conferences also could have been coordinated in a better manner since they often clashed with the film shows. It was also necessary that while there are films that last less than a minute and others may go over one hour, the selection of films in one slot should as far as possible be of a similar kind. -

ON THE TRANSLATION OF BINODINI’S ASANGBA NONGJABI “Whatever people in other lands might say, as far as we are concerned no Manipuri dialogue has been written that is more beautiful than this, “ Eigya Syam said. It was, no doubt, a gentle word of caution. It was winter, early in 2011. I was in Imphal for the extended mourning rituals following the death of my mother Maharaj Kumari Binodini Devi on January 17, 2011. I had once again approached Aribam Syam Sharma, or Eigya1 Syam as I called the film and theatre director about subtitling his television film of my recently deceased mother’s play Asangba Nongjabi (Crimson Rainclouds). As a film curator based in New York, I had been badgering him to subtitle this film for some years, feeling that it could then be better shown internationally. So having recently been asked by a festival in Norway to send some shorter film works written by her, I broached the subject again. No one knew the plays and other works of my mother, who wrote under the single name Binodini better than Eigya Syam. He started collaborating with my mother, in the early 1960s directing the first stage production of Crimson Rainclouds in 1966, as well as the hour-long Manipuri Television film in 2003. So when Eigya Syam said that he found the dialogue in the play so beautiful he left it all intact, changing only the scenario and sequences as a film required, I decided that I would translate the play itself. Eigya Syam could then extract the subtitles from it for the film. -

Article Meghachandra Kongbam A Glimpse of Manipuri Cinema A scene from Haobam Paban Kumar's Loktak Lairembee Manipuri Cinema starting with the first Manipuri feature film- Deb Kumar Bose’s Matamgi Manipur released on April 9, 1972, which also bagged the President’s Silver Medal for the best Regional film in Manipuri in the 20th National Film Awards, is approaching to its grand celebration of Golden Jubilee. The legacy of Manipuri cinema had its struggling past with commitment to the modern era of challenges and development. Cinema in Manipuri from pre-war period to the modern era has seen many ups and down. But the dedication of the film makers, artistes and technicians on the fertile soil of the rich cultural heritage of Manipur created a golden chapter in the history of Indian regional cinema. Manipur is the only state leading the production of films in Tibeto-Burman language in India where films are made in three different major language groups namely Indo-Aryan, Dravidian and Tibeto-Burman languages. For the first time, the privileged audience in Manipur, the erstwhile Kingdom had a rare occasion to watch a magic-lantern performance, a 1 precursor of motion picture at the end of 1890. It was during the festival of Christmas, the Political Agent of Manipur Frank St. Clair Grimwood organized a magic-lantern performance at the Residency (the present Raj Bhavan) in Imphal in the presence of the princes of Manipur. He brought projector from England and made himself the lanternslides from photographs. To make the show sensational, he presented the subjects in groups like -groups of Manipuris, photographs of princes and bits of the country, and arranged the sequences. -

The thrust areas of research include state and local economic policies, issues relating to sociological and demographic transition, environmental issues and fiscal, administrative and political decentralization and governance. It pursues fruitful contacts with other institutions and scholars devoted to social science research through collaborative research programmes, seminars, etc. The Working Paper Series provides an opportunity for ISEC faculty, visiting fellows and PhD scholars to discuss their ideas and research work before publication and to get feedback from their peer group. Papers selected for publication in the series present empirical analyses and generally deal with wider issues of public policy at a sectoral, regional or national level. These working papers undergo review but typically do not present final research results, and constitute works in progress. The emergence of Korean media is a corollary to the banning of satellite Hindi TV channels, except Doordarshan, and screening of Hindi movies in theatres and at home in the state by insurgents in the valley. -

CHAPTER – 2 A BRIEF HISTORY OF INDIAN CINEMA Indian films are unquestionably the most –seen movies in the world. Not just talking about the billion- strong audiences in India itself, where 12 million people are said to go to the cinema every day, but of large audiences well beyond the Indian subcontinent and the Diaspora, in such unlikely places as Russia, China, the Middle East, the Far East Egypt, Turkey and Africa. People from very different cultural and social worlds have a great love for Indian popular cinema, and many have been Hindi Films fans for over fifty years. Indian cinema is world – famous for the staggering amount of films it produces: the number is constantly on the increase, and recent sources estimate that a total output of some 800 films a year are made in different cities including Madrass , Bangalore , Calcutta and Hyderabad . Of this astonishing number, those films made in Bombay, in a seamless blend of Hindi and Urdu, have the widest distribution within India and Internationally. The two sister languages are spoken in six northern states and understood by over 500 million people on the Indian sub – continent alone – reason enough for Hindi and Urdu to be chosen above the fourteen official Indian languages to become the languages of Indian Popular cinema when sound came to the Indian Silver screen in 1931 . Silent Era – The cinematographe (from where we have the name cinema) invented by the Lumiere brothers functioned better the Kinetoscope of Edison and Dickson. The Lumiere brothers who invented the cinematographe started projection of short (very short, one to two minutes long) films for the Parsian public on November 28, 1895. -
