Cucumaria Frondosa for Management of The ASSESSMENT OF THE BIOLOGY, ECOLOGY AND GENETIC STRUCTURE OF THE SEA CUCUMBER CUCUMARIA FRONDOSA FOR MANAGEMENT OF THE FISHERY IN THE NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR REGION By © Justin J. So A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Ocean Sciences Centre and Department of Biology, Memorial University, St. John's (Newfoundland and Labrador) Canada 25 August 2009 ABSTRACT The biological traits of the sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa relevant from both ecological and resource management perspectives were investigated; including distribution, growth and predation on juveniles and adults, and population genetics. Natural densities were mainly dependent on substrate type and location. Spawning occurred from March to May in response to increasing phytoplankton abundance and larvae settled in ca. 5 weeks. Growth of juveniles and adults was slow (indicating ca. 25 years to reach market size) with seasonal patterns correlated with food supply. Juveniles of S. endeca fed upon post-metamorphic sea cucumbers, whereas adult feeding rates were modulated by temperature and biased towards small and injured sea cucumbers, suggesting that trawling may exacerbate predation pressure. Population genetic parameters are consistent with persistence in refugia through the last glacial maximum and local genetic patchiness is likely due to variations in recruitment. A precautionary management approach is advisable to ensure the sustainability of the fishery. 11 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are so many people I need to thank for my M.Sc. A number of unique biological and pharmacological activities including anti-angiogenic, anticancer, anticoagulant, anti-hypertension, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antithrombotic, antitumor and wound healing have been ascribed to various species of sea cucumbers. Therapeutic properties and medicinal benefits of sea cucumbers can be linked to the presence of a wide array of bioactives especially triterpene glycosides (saponins), chondroitin sulfates, glycosaminoglycan (GAGs), sulfated polysaccharides, sterols (glycosides and sulfates), phenolics, cerberosides, lectins, peptides, glycoprotein, glycosphingolipids and essential fatty acids.

In addition, gut lengths and contents of the five species were compared. Gut contents were sieved to determine the size of the particulate matter ingested. Roweia stephensoni, P. sykion and A. spyridophora were found to be suspension feeders using dendritic tentacles to capture and ingest food particles mostly <53 ~m in size. Roweia f. frauenfeldi was also a suspension feeder but, had atypical (reduced) dendritic tentacles which captured food particles between 250 ~m-1.18 mm in size. Neostichopus grammatus was a deposit feeder, ingesting sedi­ ments mostly between 106-500 ~m using tentacles which are peltate with ramified processes. The gut lengths of the four suspension-feeding species were found to be Significantly (p <0.001) longer than that of the deposit feeder. The digestive tract of all species was composed of four tissue layers, with the digestive epithelial layer of the anterior and posterior ends of the intestine of suspension feeders being significantly thicker (52 to 57 ~m) than that of the deposit feeder (about 19 to 29 ~m).

These behaviours have implications for understanding the ecological trade-offs among complex developmental strategies in the marine environment, and have practical implications for population management and aquaculture. But the lack of life stage-specific data leaves critical questions unanswered, including: (1) Why are pelagic propagules so diverse in size, colour, and development mode; and (2) do certain combinations of traits yield propagules that are better adapted to survive in the plankton and under certain environments? My PhD research explores these questions by examining the variation in echinoderm propagule morphology, locomotion and behaviour during ontogeny, and in response to abiotic cues. Firstly, I examined how egg colour patterns of lecithotrophic echinoderms correlated with behavioural, morphological, geographic and phylogenetic variables. Panina1,3 Introduction Au total, 638 références bibliographiques ont été consultées pour dresser un état des lieux de la répartition des holothuries dans les mers de l’Extrême-Orient russe. À partir de la littérature, un catalogue de 92 espèces a été établi. Les informations suivantes ont été compilées pour chaque espèce enregistrée dans le catalogue : 1) sa distribution géographique dans les mers de l’Extrême-Orient russe ; et 2) sa répartition en profondeur dans l’ensemble de son aire de répartition connue. E-mail: [email protected] , [email protected] 1Corresponding author Abstract A new genus Hemiocnus is here erected to accommodate the Mediterranean dendrochirotid sea cucumber Cladodactyla syracusana Grube, currently classified, with some doubt, in the cucumariid genus Pseudocnella. At the same time a new cucumariid species, Hemiocnus rubrobrunneus, is described from some Tunisian material, misidentified as Pseudocnella syracusana (Grube), received from the United States National Museum. The new genus appears most closely related to Pseudocnella than to any other genus within the Colochirinae. Although its body wall ossicles resemble those of Pseudoc- nella spp. it differs in that the two ventral-most tentacles are reduced and in the presence of rosettes in the tentacles. P. syracusana also cannot be classified in Ocnus because of the presence of multi-layered, fir-cone shaped plates in the body wall, often with one end denticulate; such ossicles are lacking in the type species of the latter genus. The new species, Hemiocnus rubrobrunneus, on the other hand, shows some resemblance to H. syracusanus in its characteristic buttons and incomplete baskets, differing in its softer body wall, lack of fir-cone-shaped plates and in the presence of rosettes and com- plete baskets in the body wall.
