Chapter 8 The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as a Political Space: Its Unity and Complexity* Satoshi Koyama Introduction The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzeczpospolita) was one of the largest states in early modern Europe. In the second half of the sixteenth century, after the union of Lublin (1569), the Polish-Lithuanian state covered an area of 815,000 square kilometres. It attained its greatest extent (990,000 square kilometres) in the first half of the seventeenth century. On the European continent there were only two larger countries than Poland-Lithuania: the Grand Duchy of Moscow (c.5,400,000 square kilometres) and the European territories of the Ottoman Empire (840,000 square kilometres). Therefore the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was the largest country in Latin-Christian Europe in the early modern period (Wyczański 1973: 17–8). In this paper I discuss the internal diversity of the Commonwealth in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and consider how such a huge territorial complex was politically organised and integrated. * This paper is a part of the results of the research which is grant-aided by the ‘Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research’ program of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 2005–2007. - 137 - SATOSHI KOYAMA 1. Biography of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri was born on 16 April 1955 at Betzdorf Castle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Grand Duke Henri, Prince of Nassau, Prince of Bourbon-Parma, is the eldest son of the five children of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte. On 14 February 1981, the Hereditary Grand Duke married Maria Teresa Mestre at the Cathédrale de Notre-Dame de Luxembourg. They have five children: • Prince Guillaume (born in 1981), the Hereditary Grand Duke, • Prince Félix (born in 1984), • Prince Louis (born in 1986), • Princess Alexandra (born in 1991) • Prince Sébastien (born in 1992). He became Head of State of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on 7 October 2000. Preparing his role as future Head of State Prince Henri completed his secondary education in Luxembourg and France, where he passed his baccalaureate in 1974. He trained at the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst in Great Britain and obtained the rank of officer in 1975. Prince Henri then enrolled at the Institut des hautes études internationales (Graduate Institute of International Studies) in Geneva, Switzerland, where he graduated with a Licence ès Sciences Politiques in 1980. Prince Henri met his future wife Maria Teresa Mestre during their university studies. Service Presse et Communication 1/7 In 1989, he was appointed Honorary Major of the Parachute Regiment in the United Kingdom. He also travelled extensively overseas to further his knowledge and education, particularly to the United States and Japan. As Hereditary Grand Duke, Prince Henri was an ex officio member of the Council of State from 1980 until 1998, which gave him insight into the legislative and institutional procedures and workings of the country.

A Reassessment of the British and Allied Economic and Military Mobilization in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815) By Ioannis-Dionysios Salavrakos The Wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era lasted from 1792 to 1815. During this period, seven Anti-French Coalitions were formed ; France managed to get the better of the first five of them. The First Coalition was formed between Austria and Prussia (26 June 1792) and was reinforced by the entry of Britain (January 1793) and Spain (March 1793). Minor participants were Tuscany, Naples, Holland and Russia. In February 1795, Tuscany left and was followed by Prussia (April); Holland (May), Spain (August). In 1796, two other Italian States (Piedmont and Sardinia) bowed out. In October 1797, Austria was forced to abandon the alliance : the First Coalition collapsed. The Second Coalition, between Great Britain, Austria, Russia, Naples and the Ottoman Empire (22 June 1799), was terminated on March 25, 1802. A Third Coalition, which comprised Great Britain, Austria, Russia, Sweden, and some small German principalities (April 1805), collapsed by December the same year. The Fourth Coalition, between Great Britain, Austria and Russia, came in October 1806 but was soon aborted (February 1807). The Fifth Coalition, established between Britain, Austria, Spain and Portugal (April 9th, 1809) suffered the same fate when, on October 14, 1809, Vienna surrendered to the French – although the Iberian Peninsula front remained active. Thus until 1810 France had faced five coalitions with immense success. The tide began to turn with the French campaign against Russia (June 1812), which precipitated the Sixth Coalition, formed by Russia and Britain, and soon joined by Spain, Portugal, Austria, Prussia, Sweden and other small German States.

110 THE JOURNAL OF BYELORUSSIAN STUDIES ■ An Historical Conspectus of the Sources of Byelorussian Law BY STANISLAŪ SAVICKI The extraordinary complexity of the political organisation and cultural development of the inhabitants of the Eastern Slavic lands are reflected in the growth of legal norms, in the concepts of law and order, and in the judicial organisation which prevailed in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its history presents an interesting picture — several distinct cultural traditions competing with each other in an endeavour to form a cohesive whole, a political body, out of different ethnic groups, and to formulate a common civilisation, whilst allowing each distinct group to weave its own pattern into the common fabric, The development and organisation of the State were influenced both by the culture of the Latin West and by Greek Orthodoxy. Its national components included over half a dozen variegated ethnic and religious groups, — Byelorussians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Poles, Jews, Tartars, Germans and a small number of Greek traders. The first Byelorussian State, Polotian Ruś, was created in the middle of the XIth century by Prince Ūsiaslav, with Polack as its capital. The other Slavic principalities contemporary with Polack were, in the South, Kievan Ruś with Kiev as the capital, and Novgorod in the North. The period from the Xth to the XIIth century was marked by an almost perpetual struggle between the two predominant dynasties, — those of Polack and of Kiev. Little is known about politico-juridicial structure of society at this time, though it was characterised by the dominance of primitively democratic ideas in the social structure of the country, by social equality, and by an absence of class strife.

CHAPTER TWO Historical Background I always been interested in history, not that I know a lot about it, but in a more general way. You can not do family history with out wondering what outside forces influenced people to remain in a certain place and others to move on, hopefully to a better life. In the early times of our Great-Great-Great Grandparents when the rulers of the people (Secular or Ecclesiastical) would sneeze the people would get pneumonia. Friedl and Friedel provided some history in their Summary. I would like to provide additional information about the area and German history that affected the village of Astheim and our ancestors, especially the Secularization of the Church. Astheim is a small village located on the Main river, an important tributary of the Rhine river in western Germany. This is an important grape growing region. Astheim located in an area known as Franconia {fran-kohn'-ee-uh} which consists of the central German lands in the Main River valley and forms the northern segment of the state of Bavaria in Germany. Franconia derived its name from the Franks who settled there early in the Middle Ages. After the Carolingian collapse, Franconia became one of the five tribal duchies of Germany. The nominal duchies of Eastern and Western Franconia emerged, but ecclesiastical princes--notably the archbishops of Mainz and the bishops of Wurzburg, Bamberg, and Speyer--later dominated the area. Most of this area eventually passed to Bavaria on the dissolution of the empire in 1803-06. Bavaria (Bayern) is a state, or land, in south-central Germany.

The Grand Duchess, who, to her great regret, could not join me on this long journey, and I consider your personal invitation as a sign of friendship and affection for our people. Majesty, You have shown much affinity and integrity toward my father since first meeting him on the occasion of the accession of Elizabeth II in 1953. From state visits to private meetings, real bonds of affection have grown between our families. We are happy to be able to share with you these official moments as well as more personal moments, and thus appreciate your uniquely fine character, as that of the Empress. For all Westerners, the discovery of Japan and its civilization remains a unique experience. I remember very well the year of 1981, when I traveled your country incognito by bus. The Grand Duchess joined me at the end of the journey, which allowed us, as newlyweds, to discover many wonders including the island of Hokkaido. I was struck by the excellent education of the young people I met, because they knew Luxembourg despite being a distant country. The Japanese business world also deeply intrigued me with its emphasis on reaching a consensus to make decisions, which was not very common in our country.
