Introduction In May 1992, Teachers Management Investment Corporation requested that the Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission attempt to identify and research the historically significant points of interest located on the Lorna Rica Ranch. NCHLC conducted searches of county records, newspapers, Nevada County Historical Society Bulletins from 1948 to the present, reviewed pertinent literature and histories, searched the Empire Mine files and conducted interviews of citizens in attempts to determine the historical points of interest on Lorna Rica Ranch. Additionally, field surveys were conducted by members of the NCHLC to better understand the various facets of the potential sites located on Lorna Rica Ranch. This enables the NCHLC to develop a clearer understanding of what could be considered historically significant to the citizens of Nevada County. The research uncovered five historically significant tangible sites. The sections under investigation are: (1) two prehistoric Southern Maidu sites; (2) remnants of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad beds; (3) remains of the Idaho Maryland mine operations; (4) the Lorna Rica Ranch Thoroughbred operations; and (5) the MacBoyle reservoir which includes the purported World's Fair Fountain. The individual, Errol MacBoyle is an historically significant individual that by all rights should be included in the historically significant list of the Lorna Rica Ranch. -

[Anna Roosevelt:] Good morning and thank you, John Nelson. The news this morning as usual is full of conflict, contrast, and confusion with China and the Holy Land, the twin trouble spots of the day. And I noticed a new name has been added to the long list of Americans who've tried to work with the Chiang Kai-shek government in China and finally, in frustration and disillusionment, have thrown up their hands and concluded that it is impossible. The latest name is that of Roger Lapham, the former mayor of San Francisco and now head of China aid under the Marshall Plan. Lapham says he cannot accomplish anything with Chiang and threatens to bypass the generalissimo after this. There have been many others, General Stilwell for one, and for another, General Marshall, who returned from China greatly disillusioned. So I wonder what will be accomplished by William Bullitt, the former Ambassador to Russia who arrived in Shanghai the other day as a representative of the so-called Congressional Watchdog Committee on Foreign Aid. While Mr. Bullitt was crossing the Pacific I looked up his articles which appeared several weeks ago in Life magazine. -

The Archive of American Journalism Ambrose Bierce Collection San Francisco Examiner September 22, 1889 Prattle A Record of Individual Opinion It is stated that the furniture for the new cruiser Charleston “would grace a palace.” Mention is made of “magnificent sideboards with elaborate carvings and panels and fine mirrors,” “great heavy mahogany tables and desks of elaborate design and finish, and upholstered chairs by the score.” The cabins and staterooms, it is added, have sides “composed of panels of polished sycamore and teak, each of which is a gem of the cabinet-maker’s art.” It is to be hoped that the officers and sailors of the Charleston will harmonize with the beautiful environment. An Admiral out of keeping with the elaborate carvings, a midshipman who should not match the panels of polished sycamore, or an able seaman unable to subdue his complexion to the exact shade of the mahogany tables, would precipitate a grave artistic disaster-at-sea. If the vessel’s gunpowder is suitably perfumed with attar-of-roses, her guns gold-lated and operated by crews in silk attire, captained by Professors of Deportment, the national honor may be considered safe until there shall be a war. If our “new Navy” had no graver virtues, no more perilous perfections than gorgeous furniture, it would be well for us; but )in my humble judgment) we have not, and are not likely soon to have, a single war vessel that is worth the cost of its rudder. Our safety is to be found in the fact that the war vessels of other nations are no better. -

Kevin Starr was born in San Francisco in 1962, He served two years as lieutenant in a tank battalion in Germany. Upon release from the service, Starr entered Harvard University where he took his M.A. degree in 1965 and his Ph.D. in 1969 in American Literature. He also holds a Master of Library Science degree from UC Berkeley and has done post-doctoral work at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Starr has served as Allston Burr Senior Tutor in Eliot House at Harvard, executive assistant to the Mayor of San Francisco, the City Librarian of San Francisco, a daily columnist for the San Francisco Examiner, and a contributing editor to the Opinion section of the Los Angeles Times. The author of numerous newspaper and magazine articles, Starr has written and/or edited fourteen books, six of which are part of his America and the California Dream series. His writing has won him a Guggenheim Fellowship, membership in the Society of American Historians, and the Gold Medal of the Commonwealth Club of California. His most recent book is Coast of Dreams: California on the Edge, 1990-2003 published by Alfred A. -

The San Francisco Bay Area, California
The San Francisco Bay Area, Can disaster be a good thing for the arts? In the California San Francisco Bay Area, the answer is a qualified “yes.” A terrible earthquake has shaken loose mil- lions of dollars for the arts, while urban sprawl has boosted the development of arts centers right in the communities where people live. After the Loma Prieta earthquake struck in 1989, many key institutions were declared unsafe and had to be closed, fixed and primped. Here’s what reopened in the past five years alone: American Conservatory Theatre (ACT), the city’s major repertory theater, for $27 million; the War Memorial Opera House, home of the San Francisco Opera and Ballet, for $88 million; and on the fine arts front, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, for $40 million; and the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts at Stanford University, for $37 million. Another $130 million is being raised to rebuild the seismically crippled M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, and at least $30 million is being sought to repair the Berkeley Art Museum. Within San Francisco itself, a vital visual arts center has been forged just within the last five years with the opening of the new $62 million San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Meanwhile the Jewish Museum, the Asian Art Museum, the Mexican Museum and a new African-American cultural center all plan to move to seismically safe buildings in the area in the next two years. Art galleries, on the other hand, limp along compared with those in Los Angeles or New York. -
Chief Thomas J.Cahill: a Life in Review
SFGov Accessibility Police Department Chief Thomas J.Cahill: A Life In Review In the San Francisco Police Academy yearbook for August, 1942, on a page entitled Honors, J.Von Nostitz was chosen Most likely to become Chief of Traffic, G.K. Hoover was Most likely to become Chief of Detectives, and J.C. Cook was given the somewhat dubious honor of being Most likely to serve 40 years, presumably in the Department. In retrospect, the person who compiled these predictions weren't much on target, with one exception. Smack in the middle of the page filled with rather clever drawings of each of the officers, his name and prediction typed below, is a sketch of a curlyhaired, oval faced youth: T.J. Cahill, Most likely to become Chief of Police. Thomas Joseph Cahill has the distinction of having the longest tenure as Chief of Police in San Francisco's history, serving under three mayors – George Christopher, John Shelley, and Joseph Alioto through decades that saw tremendous social changes and upheavals. In the Richmond district flat that the shares with Felipa, his second wife of 28 years, there's a large 1967 portrait of him hanging on the wall. You can still see the firmness, directness, and sense of humor evident in the portrait in his face. Now 88, he's alert and strong, his hair white but still wavy. With a touch of the brogue that's never left him, he reminisced over a career that spanned 30 years. Tom was born on June 8, 1910 on Montana Street on the North Side of Chicago. -

Miller Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2008 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Dr. Sonja Peterson-Lewis The war industries associated with World War II brought unparalleled employment opportunities for African Americans in California's port cities. Nowhere was this more evident than in San Francisco, a city whose African American population grew by over 650% between 1940 and 1945. With this population increase also came an increase in racial discrimination directed at African Americans, primarily in the employment and housing sectors. The situation would only get worse throughout the 1950s and 1960s as manufacturing jobs moved to the East Bay where race restrictive housing policies kept African Americans from moving with them. In San Francisco, most African Americans were effectively barred from renting or buying homes in all but a few neighborhoods, neighborhoods often characterized by dilapidated structures and over-crowded conditions. Except for the well educated and lucky, employment opportunities for African Americans were open only at or near entry levels for white collar positions or in unskilled v and semi-skilled blue collar positions. Despite such challenges, San Francisco's African American population nearly doubled between 1950 and 1960. -

It’s not because I did not somewhere deep inside have the determination to finish, but because the things I want to understand are endless. How could I really gather enough bits and pieces to say something new about San Francisco? How could I interweave the well documented history of sexual politics in the city into a new historical geographic context? Would it really look any different? I am writing these words because, mercifully, this dissertation project ultimately does have an end point. That being said, I am comforted by the fact that there is still more to the story than I have been able to piece together here.
