As members of the first and second generations of women rabbis, they offer unique perspectives on the recent histories of both American and Jewish cultures. This dissertation is a narrative exploration of how these rabbis came of age, cultivated self-understanding, chose careers as spiritual leaders, crafted public identities, and formed communities in 20th/21st Century American Jewish societies. This research focuses on the role of autobiographical story construction and performance in the transformation of rabbinic leadership, and examines the ways in which these stories provide new models for people seeking contemporary or alternative Jewish practice and connection. As members of the first and second generations of women rabbis to practice in the United States, these five women offer unique perspectives on the recent histories of both American and Jewish cultures. They have experienced the opportunities and the challenges that many women in these societies have faced over the second half of the 20th century. They have also experienced pressures specifically relating to their choices to receive rabbinic ordination, an option that only became available to women in 1972. While I anticipated such experiences to play significant roles in the stories each rabbi conveyed, I did not anticipate the importance of the form and content in each rabbi’s story. The rabbis, as practiced storytellers, seemed fully aware of the ways in which their narrative selections, story form and content would be received by their intended audiences, and were careful to build their stories of profession and community in ways that evoked authenticity, integrity, insight, and inspiration. Through this work I have had the fortune of working with five remarkable women whose experiences and stories have recorded, transformed, and created Jewish communities in New Mexico. I have a tremendous respect for each storyteller. In our collaborations, I have benefited from their knowledge, dedication, patience, and passion.     Kol Ishah: A Woman’s Voice This is the third year of the Women’s League Divrei Hokhmah initiative: engrossing material to be used at the beginning of a Sisterhood meeting as a d’var Torah . There is no better way to involve your women than to warm them up with a spirited discussion about issues of importance. This Divrei Hokhmah: Kol Ishah unit is designed as a brief ten-minute (or less – or more!) prelude to your Sisterhood meetings. We have provided prepared texts and study questions to generate lively discussion and social interaction as an effective lead-in to your program. Additionally, women will be involved in the mitzvah of study, one of Judaism’s most revered values. New Format • The format has been revamped and is designed so that anyone can lead the discussion. • There are fewer questions, and they require very little prior preparation by the discussion leader. • It is imperative, however, that there be sufficient copies of the participants’ texts so that women can read along. • Save unused material for another time. You can use it in a variety of venues. Why Kol Ishah? The concept of Kol Ishah: A Woman’s Voice was initially derived from the 20 th anniversary celebration of the Jewish Theological Seminary’s investiture of female cantors. Commemorated by this year’s Torah Fund pin, it was a deliciously ironic tribute to women whose voices were once banned from public ritual. Willard presented his painting, Spirit of ‘76, Iat the U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, PA. The painting depicts three generations of Americans fighting for their new nation’s freedom, one of whom is marching along though slightly wounded in battle. Willard’s powerful portrayal of the strength and determination of the American people in the face of overwhelming odds inspired millions. The painting quickly became one of the most popular patriotic images in American history. The goal is to show that the ordination of the first woman rabbi in the United States initiated Jewish feminism, and while this raised awareness, full-equality for Jewish women currently remains unachieved. This has been done by examining such events at the ordination process of Sally Priesand, reviewing the scholarship of Jewish women throughout the waves of Jewish feminism, and examining the perspectives of current Reform rabbis (one woman and one man). Upon the examination of these events and perspectives, it becomes clear that the full-equality of women is a continual struggle within all branches of American Judaism. This research highlights the importance of bringing to light an issue in the religion of Judaism that remains unnoticed, either purposefully or unintentionally by many, inside and outside of the religion.
