To learn more about the town, it is necessary to understand the close relationship between the town with its territory and the sea. This is underlined by the old town overlooking Piazza Bovio, from which a view of crystal blue waters, the Canal of Piombino, opens until Elba island and the little islands of the archipelago, bordering the horizon and hugging the coast from the town center to the Gulf of Baratti (nominated by the Municipality of Piom- bino, for the inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list). Everything through a pristine landscape of fragrant mediterranean wood and a series of coves and beaches hidden between the rocks. Towards the East, however, the view is lost in the other beautiful beaches that since 2008, have achieved recognition by the FEE Blue Flag. There are many reminders of its illustrious past with Appiani family (who called at their court artists Napoleon·s sister, Elisa Bonaparte, who gave the town a period of great splendor (enough to merit Kingdom of Italy. To learn more about this town, walk down the old town, starting with the oldest monument (built in 1212), the “Torrione” with its “Rivellino”, the only evidence remained of the com- munal age. Piombino 2012 E 12-16 C Piombino 2016 Open Water September 9-11 Swimming 8 Junior September Then, crossing Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, we arrive at the Town Hall, (www.comune.piombino. it), a twentieth-century restoration of the ancient “Palazzo dei Priori” that preserves its grandeur, turismopiombino.it). Here we are at the “Castle”, a beautiful Medicean fortress built between the thirteenth and the nineteenth century, restored in 2001, to host the “Museo del Castello e della Cit- tà” (“Castle and town Museum”), which tells its story through a didactic way. In the old stables and accommodation of the Court of Appiani, was opened, also in 2001, the “Archaeological Museum of Populonia” (the only Etruscan city born near the sea), where are preserved more than 2,000 - man settlements in the territory, from prehistory to the Etruscan period to the late-antique Roman. It came down to us intact, so that it has often been called “Gardens of Tuscany” for its fertile plains, its pleasant hills, and the presence of a clean sea. It includes: Piombino, the ancient capital of the ancient Prin- cipality, situated on a promontory stretching directly to the sea with its piazza Bovio, and bound strongly to the history of the Etruscans. San Vincenzo, a modern sea resort, Campiglia Marittima, Suvereto (Orange Flag TCI) and Sassetta, ancient medieval villages placed on the hills, offering the visitor a nearly intact view, with its ancient walls and narrow and dark streets, memory and pride of their ancient history. Different places, but united in the philosophy of the true quality of life, tourist destinations for those who usually prefers the tranquillity and contact with history and traditions. A each other in an exciting and harmonious play of light. An extensive line of hills framing the valley from north to east, characterized by soft, rounded forms. - ding towards the valley, often leaving room for the cultivation of olive groves and vineyards. To the southwest, isolated along the coast and extended toward the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago just as to recall its geological origins, the promontory of Piombino, connected to the mainland by a wide Piombino 2012 E 12-16 C Piombino 2016 Open Water September 9-11 Swimming 10 Junior September The plain extends from the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills) to the coast, from San Vin- cenzo to Vignale-Riotorto. This landscape is the result of a synergy between man and nature, as the recent drainage works have favoured the development of both urban and agricultural exploitation. The spontaneous vegetation co- ver is very low here, and gave way to pastures and crops, including the predominating arable crops, and particularly cereals, and vegetables (artichokes, spinaches, tomatoes and melons).

Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 22 February 2017 The 2017 ERL Emergency Grand Challenge will be hosted in Piombino, Tuscany (Italy) on 15-23 September Following the success of euRathlon 2015, the European Robotics League has entrusted the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), based in La Spezia (Italy), with the organization of the 2017 event devoted to the field of robots as a first response in emergency situations. Dates and venue of the competition were announced on 22 February during a press conference held by CMRE and Municipality Less than 100 minutes, a race against the clock to survey the scene of a simulated disaster, collect environmental data, and identify critical hazards, find and help missing workers. This is a challenge that only ground, marine and aerial robots can tackle effectively by working together. And this is the challenge proposed by the international robotics competition which returns again this summer to Piombino (Italy) as part of the major tournament of the European Robotics League – Emergency Robots challenge. The ERL Emergency 2017 event will be locally organised on 15-23 September, near the Enel-owned thermal power plant at Torre del Sale, by the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), based in La Spezia (Italy), which masterminded the euRathlon project’s final competition in 2015 in the same venue. “We are glad to come back to Piombino in a location that has already proven to be perfectly suitable to host this kind of competition, inspired by the 2011 Fukushima accident”, says Gabriele Ferri, Technical Director. “Once again the town will be the international capital of robotics for a few days.

  • Ambito 23 Val Di Cornia
QUADRO CONOSCITIVO Ambito n°23 VAL DI CORNIA PROVINCE : Livorno TERRITORI APPARTENENTI AI COMUNI : Campiglia Marittima, Follonica, Piombino, San Vincenzo, Sassetta, Suvereto CENNI DI OROGRAFIA E DI IDROGRAFIA Quest’area coincide parzialmente col bacino del fiume Cornia.

  • A Virtual Train Journey Along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome
Italian Culture Newsletter Number 22 A Virtual Train Journey along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome. Marie and I have made this journey on a number of occasions. In doing so we have either made the journey in a single day albeit with a change of train, usually at Genova. On other occasions, we have spent an evening or even a few days at Genova and/or at Livorno or Pisa. The journey described will involve more stops on the way but could be more interesting on that account. The trip begins in Ventimiglia where we stayed overnight on our last day of our last holiday in Italy. This had been occasioned by the French railway strike which prevented any trains from running from Ventimiglia to Nice on the day of our arrival from Rome into the city at the Italian- French border in Liguria. Our first visit to Ventimiglia was in 2006 when some Italian friends from Cuneo, due north of Ventimiglia, in Piemonte, met us at the rail station in Ventimiglia to take us for a short stay at their apartment in Nice. On that occasion we didn’t see much of the city except for part of the old medieval town, which now mostly is the home of many of the southerners from Naples, Calabria and Sicily who moved north seeking employment after WWII. The old town is perched high above the new city with its long sea-front promenade and railway station. Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus.
