  • Members and Parish/Neighbourhood Councils RAIL UPDATE
ITEM 1 TRANSPORT COMMITTEE NEWS 07 MARCH 2000 This report may be of interest to: All Members and Parish/Neighbourhood Councils RAIL UPDATE Accountable Officer: John Inman Author: Stephen Mortimer 1. Purpose 1.1 To advise the Committee of developments relating to Milton Keynes’ rail services. 2. Summary 2.1 West Coast Main Line Modernisation and Upgrade is now in the active planning stage. It will result in faster and more frequent train services between Milton Keynes Central and London, and between Milton Keynes Central and points north. Bletchley and Wolverton will also have improved services to London. 2.2 Funding for East-West Rail is now being sought from the Shadow Strategic Rail Authority (SSRA) for the western end of the line (Oxford-Bedford). Though the SSRA have permitted a bid only for a 60 m.p.h. single-track railway, excluding the Aylesbury branch and upgrade of the Marston Vale (Bedford-Bletchley) line, other Railtrack investment and possible developer contributions (yet to be investigated) may allow these elements to be included, as well as perhaps a 90 m.p.h. double- track railway. As this part of East-West Rail already exists, no form of planning permission is required; however, Transport and Works Act procedures are to be started to build the missing parts of the eastern end of the line. 2.3 New trains were introduced on the Marston Vale line, Autumn 1999. A study of the passenger accessibility of Marston Vale stations identified various desirable improvements, for which a contribution of £10,000 is required from this Council.

  • Eccleshall Parish Register, Vol 1 1573-1618
VOL. I. AND VOL. II., 1573—1618. Vol. I. is the original paper register. It contains the— •Baptisms, 1573—1584 and 1588—1611. Marriages, 1578—1617. Burials, 1573—1581 and 1584—1617. Vol. II. is a fair copy of Vol. T., made on parchment about 1599. It contain!, all the Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials from 1573—1599, including those now missing from Vol. I. Botli those volumes arc well bound, the writing is legible, and they arc in a good state of preservation. The copyist did not follow the spelling of Vol. I. but adopted his own system of spelling both the Christian and surnames. Hence there is scarcely a line which is a verbatim et literatim copy of the original. The present transcriber has not thought it necessary to note the variations in the spelling of the Christian names, nor such minor differences in the surnames as the addition or the omission of an " c," " a," " y " for an " i," or the doubling of a consonant, but every important variation in a surname has been carefully noted in italic type between parentheses. VOL. 111., 1620—1667. This volume is also well bound and legible. Several of the entries are partially mutilated owing to the bottom corner of several of the loaves having been torn off. There arc no entries between 22 May, 1625, and 29 March, 1627, but with this exception the register appears to have been most carefully kept, even during the Commonwealth period. On pages 99 to 106 are several marriage entries for the years 1653 to 1656, many of which appear to have no connection with Ecclcshall, as couples seem to have come here from the neighbouring towns and villages to get their banns published.

  • Cathedral News
Cathedral News August 2019 – No. 688 From: The Dean We’ve recently gone through the process of Peer Review. After the Chapter had completed a lengthy self-evaluation questionnaire on matters of governance and finance and so on, three reviewers came from other cathedrals to mark our homework. Or rather, to bring an external perspective to bear, and help us refine our thinking about where we are heading as a cathedral. In spite of our natural wariness in advance, only to be expected given the amount of external scrutiny the cathedral has undergone in recent years, it was an encouraging experience. More of that, however, in a future Cathedral News. For now, I want to pick up on a comment made by all three reviewers. They came to us from Liverpool, Winchester, and Ely, and all expressed delight, and surprise, at the splendour of our cathedral: “We had no idea what a marvellous building it is!” For me, their observations provoked two questions... Is it because we all take the building for granted? Or is it because we’ve failed to tell our story effectively? I suspect there is truth behind both these questions. We all know how ‘distance lends enchantment to the view’; and the converse is also clearly true. It is not that familiarity necessarily breeds contempt, but you cannot live in a perpetual state of wonderment. Sir Simon Jenkins, the author of all those books on beautiful houses and railway stations and churches and cathedrals, told of his visit to Exeter: “I came into the cathedral and sat in silence for half an hour, overwhelmed by the beauty of the place.” I have the benefit of being in the cathedral every day, and will often speak of how our vaulted ceiling lifts my heart daily to heaven.

  • The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.

ONE OF THE RIGHT HONORABLE THE LORDS COMMISSIONERS OF HIS MAJESTY’s TREASURY, AND MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR THE TOWN AND PORT OF DOVER, &c. &c. SIR, YOUR partiality to a county, of which this is a History, has given me hopes, that the Dedication of this part of it to you will not be looked upon in an unacceptable light. The continued assistance and li= beral encouragement which you have favored me with in the progress of my larger History, and the many other essential marks of friendship which you iv have honored me with, cannot but flatter me with those hopes. You are besides, Sir, materially con= nected with the county, by the important station which you have so long held in representing the town and port of Dover, to the universal satisfaction of your constituents, who, confident of your attachment to the best of kings, and the happy constitution of this country, (an attachment which you have perse= vered in with unabated constancy) have continued their approbation of your conduct by repeatedly chusing you, with the same fervent zeal, in two suc= cessive parliaments.
