PRESS RELEASE BRAFA 2020 ALL TOGETHER DIFFERENT Over more than fifty years, Galerie Oscar De Vos built a tradition of prestigious exhibitions on Modern Belgian Art, with an emphasis on the art of The Latem School. Artists such as George Minne, Valerius De Saedeleer, Gustave Van de Woestyne, Emile Claus, Albert Servaes, Constant Permeke, Gust. De Smet, Frits Van den Berghe and Hubert Malfait enjoy the appreciation of a large audience throughout museum exhibitions, publications in Belgium and abroad. Each of these artists loved the nature of Latem. There they created their works spontaneously and interacted with the other artists who resided in the village. The region of Flanders has long been an area rich in art. On the outskirts of the city Ghent, along the river Lys, artists relocated to the village of Sint-Martens-Latem. In Flanders, artists converged on Latem because of its beauty. In this pastoral environment were born a great many attractive works that could not have been originated in any city. The artworks on show during BRAFA 2020 will mainly be divided in two thematic sections: Symbolism and Expressionism (1890-1930). The collection of Galerie Oscar De Vos for the 65th BRAFA edition will mark this period as part of the flow of art history. The focus will be on artworks of an important provenance, being fresh on the art market and that have been exhibited in international art institutions, such as Venice Art Biennale, Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum, Eindhoven Van Abbe Museum, Hamburg Kunsthaus, London Royal Academy of Arts, Maastricht Bonnefanten Museum, Sao Paolo Museo de Arta Moderna.

In 1600’s the river Leie/Lys was a commercial navigation that flowed from Pas-de-Calais to Gent. Between the cities of Armentieres and Mennen it traced the Belgium-French border. It’s devastating floods demanded major works and meander cut- offs, leaving a set of 7 islands at the sides of the canal. 2. The 4.5 meter difference in elevation along the border section of the river was overcome by two locks completed in 1780. The river carried a heavy traffic in grain and linen to Ghent and Antwerp. The navigation was leased out to a company around 1825, and the locks upgraded to 5.20 m wide, for a draught of 1.60 m. 3. From 1930s, the border section improved the size of lock chambers to a length of 39 metres, a width of 5.2 metres and a minimum water depth of 2.2 metres, thus allowing Va class barges to pass through. Also, in 1995, the Schengeng area agreements have dissolved the permanent border controls between Belgium and France. 5. Though the decline of major industrial activities and the lock’s outdated size, the river is still used by cargo barges and recreational boats.

E M I L E C1 L8 A4- U9 1 S 9 2 4 September along the river Lys Circa: 1910 1910 Oil on canvas 80 x 110 cm (31¹/₂ x 43¹/₄ inches) Signed lower left: Emile Claus On reverse canvas: September / A.J. / E.C. Emile Claus founded in 1904 together with Adriaan Josef Heymans and other artists the group 'Vie er Lumière'. His overriding concern was to fill his paintings with as much light as possible. It was a movement that he had been working towards all his life and whose principal impetus came from the French impressionists. Claus had exhibited with the avant garde movement of Octave Maus, 'Les XX' and 'La Libre Esthétique' but by founding 'Vie et Lumière' he wanted to channel his ideas with greater purpose. In the 1880's Claus had acquired an old hunting lodge at Astene on the banks of the river Lys which was called 'Villa Zonneschyn'. It was here that he spent most of his working life. The valley of the Lys and the surrounding landscape provided the subject matter and inspiration for many of hi greatest paintings. Artist description:: With the help of Peter Benoit, Emile Claus was able to study at the Antwerp Academy for the Fine Arts from 1869 to 1874. Claus came from a modest milieu with only limited appreciation for his artistic ambitions. Yet in a short period of time the young man would win a place in Antwerp’s art life. In 1874, barely finished with his studies, he submitted work for the triennial exhibition in Ghent; his entry was immediately accepted.

Belgium and the semantic flux of Flemish, French and Flemings. Christophe Declercq, University College London / University of Antwerp [running headline: the semantic flux of Flemish, French and Flemings] With the outbreak of war, Britain drastically altered its image of Belgium. Especially under Leopold II, Belgium had become a colonial power of note, especially in Africa from the 1880s onwards. However, in Britain the disgraceful and inhumane rule of Belgium over its colonies was exposed in a report by Roger Casement and E.D. Morel. In the early 1900s, relations between Britain and Belgium had become sour. Although these improved after the death of Leopold II in 1909, the public image of Belgium still had to undergo a dramatic change in order to move from oppressor to the oppressed in August 1914. However, the image of Belgium continued to be difficult one to grasp for the British, not least in newspaper articles on Belgians. This paper covers insight into the at times awkward understanding by the British of Belgian matters during the war, taking into account preceding confused impressions as well, and how this was met by the Belgians in Britain. Emile Verhaeren and setting a semantic framework On 28 February 1896, the Sheffield Independent printed many literary and art notices. These included a review of the contemporary Magazine of Art . Emile Verhaeren’s account of the ‘French artist Feliccen [sic] Rops’ was reviewed. The talent of Felicien Rops, who during the First World War was a refugee himself, had ‘dwelled so strangely on the hideous side of the life of Paris’.
