The show won two 00 Emmys (out- standing children’s program and outstanding choreography) and was nominated for four other Emmys. It was the Disney Channel’s most successful movie at its time with 7.7 million viewers in its premiere broadcast. (That record was later beaten by The Cheetah Girls 2 with 8. million viewers.) The school’s original mascot in the movie was going to be a leop- ard, but it was changed to a wildcat. Lucas Grabeel (who plays Ryan) wore nine different hats during the movie. Corbin Bleu originally auditioned for Ryan. When he saw Lucas Grabeel dancing at the audition, Corbin said that he couldn’t shake like Lucas could. So, instead, he auditioned for Chad and was cast. Zac Efron had to undergo three hours of basketball practice every day because his character was the captain of the basketball team. Corbin Bleu came up with the slogans that appear on the shirts that he wears in the movie. Zac Efron’s singing voice was that of Andrew Seeley, who was also considered for the role. Seeley sang the entirety of “Get’cha Head in the Game” and the reprise of “What I’ve Been Looking For.” Efron only sings the first four lines of “Start of Something New,” the first sentence of “Breaking Free” and during the scene on the balcony. The reason for this is because Efron’s natural voice was too low for that of a tenor and the producers wanted a tenor to match the role. Seeley was a high school Thespian in Orlando, Florida, where he performed lead roles in many of his school’s productions. He won “best of show” for duet acting at Florida’s State Thespian competi- tion in 999 with a scene from The Judas Kiss. Ashley Tisdale tried out for the role of Gabriella Montez but direc- tor Kenny Ortega thought she would do better playing the part of Sharpay Evans. High School Musical 2 will premiere on the Disney Channel on Fri- day, August 7 at 7 p.m. central time. In the new movie, school’s out and Troy, Gabriella, Chad and Taylor have summer jobs at the Lava Springs Country Club, owned by Sharpay and Ryan Evans’ family. The soundtrack for High School Musical 2 will be released on Tues- day, August 14. There are even plans in the works for High School Musical 3, but the script is still being developed. UCLA UCLA Electronic Theses and Dissertations Title Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/1k1860wx Author Ellis, Sarah Taylor Publication Date 2013 Peer reviewed|Thesis/dissertation eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Theater and Performance Studies by Sarah Taylor Ellis 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater by Sarah Taylor Ellis Doctor of Philosophy in Theater and Performance Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Sue-Ellen Case, Co-chair Professor Raymond Knapp, Co-chair This dissertation explores queer processes of identification with the genre of musical theater. I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings.

  • High School Musical 2 Review | Music Reviews and News
High School Musical 2 Review | Music Reviews and News Image credit: Adam Larkey HAVIN' A BALL Efron (front) works from the same playbook in High School Musical 2, but still comes up a winner EW says... Min. Age 7-9 Yrs Old The way the music biz has been going, it figures that the biggest album of 2006 was an ancillary product. But as celebrated offshoots go, the quadruple-platinum soundtrack to High School Musical - - last year's top cable draw and the best-selling TV-movie DVD ever -- was a darned effective souvenir. A song like ''Start of Something New'' could provide modest pleasure on its own. Combine it with the insanely cute chemistry between Vanessa Hudgens (bookworm Gabriella) and Zac Efron (jock Troy) -- she with those (virginal) bedroom eyes, he with those perpetually surprised peepers -- and it's suddenly transcendent pop, for anyone able to recall or anticipate the first flush of puppy love. With High School Musical 2, the franchise is putting its music foot first. The soundtrack arrives Aug. 14, three days before the sequel's Disney Channel premiere -- a gap that'll give kids (and parents) time to commit every lyric to memory, making the movie's first airing a full-on karaoke experience. While this material won't upstage the Rodgers and Hammerstein legacy, it is on par with the previous soundtrack's sweet, crafty fun. Just as the sequel has the same creators (and the films feel like they were shot back-to-back), the new album mostly uses the original's songwriting teams and templates.
