The show won two 00 Emmys (out- standing children’s program and outstanding choreography) and was nominated for four other Emmys. It was the Disney Channel’s most successful movie at its time with 7.7 million viewers in its premiere broadcast. (That record was later beaten by The Cheetah Girls 2 with 8. million viewers.) The school’s original mascot in the movie was going to be a leop- ard, but it was changed to a wildcat. Lucas Grabeel (who plays Ryan) wore nine different hats during the movie. Corbin Bleu originally auditioned for Ryan. When he saw Lucas Grabeel dancing at the audition, Corbin said that he couldn’t shake like Lucas could. So, instead, he auditioned for Chad and was cast. Zac Efron had to undergo three hours of basketball practice every day because his character was the captain of the basketball team. Corbin Bleu came up with the slogans that appear on the shirts that he wears in the movie. Zac Efron’s singing voice was that of Andrew Seeley, who was also considered for the role. Seeley sang the entirety of “Get’cha Head in the Game” and the reprise of “What I’ve Been Looking For.” Efron only sings the first four lines of “Start of Something New,” the first sentence of “Breaking Free” and during the scene on the balcony. The reason for this is because Efron’s natural voice was too low for that of a tenor and the producers wanted a tenor to match the role. Seeley was a high school Thespian in Orlando, Florida, where he performed lead roles in many of his school’s productions. He won “best of show” for duet acting at Florida’s State Thespian competi- tion in 999 with a scene from The Judas Kiss. Ashley Tisdale tried out for the role of Gabriella Montez but direc- tor Kenny Ortega thought she would do better playing the part of Sharpay Evans. High School Musical 2 will premiere on the Disney Channel on Fri- day, August 7 at 7 p.m. central time. In the new movie, school’s out and Troy, Gabriella, Chad and Taylor have summer jobs at the Lava Springs Country Club, owned by Sharpay and Ryan Evans’ family. The soundtrack for High School Musical 2 will be released on Tues- day, August 14. There are even plans in the works for High School Musical 3, but the script is still being developed.
