Primary purpose of the ride was to remember the 38 men who were unjustly tried, punished and executed by hanging on December 26, 1862. It is also to encourage the young riders to learn the history of the Dakota people. By riding the routes the Dakota people took to the prison site at Mankato, they will remember and learn of the sacrifices the Dakota men made. All Dakota bands and people who numbered in the thousands were forcibly removed from the state of Minnesota and relocated on various reservations on the Great Plains. That legislation is still intact. The young Sisseton-Wahpeton riders met other riders from Crow Creek, Flandreau, Santee and Canada who also participated in the trek. These riders are Gathered at the Land of Memories Park, Mankato. In the front are Dr. Peter Warhol and Gabrielle Tateyuskanskan. descendants of those who were imprisoned, punished or removed. The youth took care of their own horses; rose in the early morning hours to feed, water and groom their horses for the ride. Chaperones and other horsemen were there to check the horses and tack for the safety of the youth. On the first day of their ride, December 23rd, the young riders started from Birch Coulee Battlefield (near Morton, Minnesota) and rode to Fort Ridgely, a distance of 18 miles. The second day they rode from Fort Ridgely to near Courtland, Minnesota, a 25-mile trek. The third day was from Courtland to Mankato, a distance of 18 miles. On the fourth day the riders went from the Land of Memories Park in south Mankato to downtown Mankato, near the site of the hanging of the 38 Dakota men. A ceremony was held there, along with many prayers of the people. The weather was mild this year and there was no snow, but sacrifices were also made by the horses. They usually forage about 18 hours a day, and during the ride

In its landmark report entitled Defending Democracy: Confronting Modern Barriers to Voting Rights in America, the NAACP directly takes on the new Jim Crow tactics passed in fourteen states that are designed to keep minorities from voting in 2012. The report analyzes 25 laws that target black, minority and poor voters “unfairly and unnecessarily restrict[ing] the right to vote.” It notes “…a coordinated assault on voting rights.” The Free Press has been reporting on this coordinated assault since the 2000 election, including the heroic struggle of voters in Ohio to postpone the enactment of the draconian House Bill 194 that was the most restrictive voting rights law passed in the United States. The NAACP points out that this most recent wave of voter repression is a reaction to the “…historic participation of people of color in the 2008 presidential election and substantial minority population growth according to the 2010 consensus….” It should be no surprise that the states of the old Confederacy – Florida, Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina Please see our special section of photo highlights There have been two long and very caustic letters in – are in the forefront of repressing black voters.
