It is also to encourage the young riders to learn the history of the Dakota people. The second day they rode from Fort Ridgely to near Courtland, Minnesota, a 25-mile trek. The third day was from Courtland to Mankato, a distance of 18 miles. On the fourth day the riders went from the Land of Memories Park in south Mankato to downtown Mankato, near the site of the hanging of the 38 Dakota men. A ceremony was held there, along with many prayers of the people. The weather was mild this year and there was no snow, but sacrifices were also made by the horses.
