    REPORT FOR ACTION Intention to Designate under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act – 2 Valleyanna Drive Date: May 25, 2021 To: Toronto Preservation Board North York Community Council From: Senior Manager, Heritage Planning, Urban Design, City Planning Wards: Don Valley West – 15 SUMMARY This report recommends that City Council state its intention to designate the property at 2 Valleyanna Drive under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage value for its design and physical, historical and associative, and contextual value. The property at 2 Valleyanna Drive, Annandale/Uplands, was listed on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register on September 27, 2006. The property at 2 Valleyanna Drive is located at the northeast corner of Bayview Avenue and Valleyanna Drive and is comprised of a two-storey, L-shaped building. Originally the gatehouse to Dr Herbert Alexander Bruce's "Annandale" estate, which served as the physical and visual entryway to his 100-acre property, the building was designed by renowned architect Eden Smith in 1920-21, and is situated on a rectangular-shaped portion of the property fronting Bayview Avenue. In 1956-7, after Valleyanna Drive was created, the gatehouse, then called "Uplands," was sold to Frederick E. Fletcher and his wife, Barbara Jean Fletcher, who converted the building for residential use. The adaptive reuse involved conceptually re-orienting the converted gatehouse to the quieter residential street of Valleyanna Drive by filling in the original carriageway and introducing the front entrance on the east elevation. It also involved conducting interior alterations and adding the octagonal dining room wing at the northeast end of the property, which created its present L-shape plan.

Au sein de la seconde catégorie, les séries Y297-301 présentent des données provinciales sur les lieutenants-gouverneurs et les premiers ministres et les séries Y302-387 fournissent des renseignements sur les résultats des élections provinciales. Les statistiques de la présente section peuvent être classées dans deux groupes principaux en fonction des sources dont elles proviennent.     The Bruce Report and Social Welfare Leadership in the Politics of Toronto’s “Slums”, 1934–1939 RYAN GEORGE* Slum clearance and rebuilding first became a serious political project in Toronto during the 1930s. Following the release of a systematic housing survey known as the Bruce Report (1934), a set of actors distinguished by their planning authority with respect to social agencies, influence over social work education, coordination of social research, and role as spokespersons of religious bodies inaugurated a pol- itical struggle over state power. While the campaign failed, it called forth a reaction from established authorities and reconfigured the local political field as it related to low-income housing. This article gives an account of these processes by drawing upon correspondence and minutes of meetings of city officials and the campaign’s organizers, newspaper clippings, and published materials.     Our Club is our Members The Albany Club 1882 - 2015 Overview Throughout 2015, the Club celebrated the 200th anniversary of the 75 Bay Street birth of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first Prime Minister. The participation of Rt. Hon Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993, made the dinner on November 5, 2015 a highlight of our celebrations. Over 625 members & guests attended. Interest in this event was so strong it was moved from the Club to the Fairmont Royal York – only the second time this has happened in our history. In 1893, Prime Minister Sir John Thompson was guest speaker at a Sir John A. dinner that attracted 62 people (more than could be accommodated at 34 Colborne Street). This was one factor that prompted the Club to move to 91 King Street East in 1898. The souvenir booklet handed out at the event included considerable information about our most important attribute – our members - that we are pleased to make available on the Club website. Founding of the Albany Club October 27, 1882 Sir John A. Macdonald was the inspiration when the Albany Club was founded in 1882. Two of his protégées – Alexander Macdonell of Alex- andria and Alexander Morris of Kingston – played key roles in the Club’s establishment and early operations. Macdonell, the son of Sir John A.’s law partner in Kingston, was called upon to reorganize the Party after the 1873 election and it was only natural he should perform a similar role, after the failure of the United Empire Club, the original Conservative club in Toronto.

Series Yl-296 concern the federal scene, series Y297-387 the 10 provincial scenes. Within the first major division, series Yl-40 contain data on executive and legislative posts and occupants; series Y41-210 on elections and parliamentary sessions; series Y211-263 on employees and representation abroad; and series Y264-296 on disallowance of provincial acts, reservation of provincial bills and on federal Royal Commissions. Within the second division, series Y297-801 present provincial data on Lieutenant-Governors and premiers; series Y302-387 the results of provincial elections. The statistics of this section are obtained in a way that places them in two major categories: those for which there are official records, such as the data for the monarchy, for the Governor General and provincial Lieutenant-Governors, for parliamentary terms and for elections; and those for which only unofficial records exist, including all those involving election results by political parties, and political affiliation of ministers, electoral candidates and elected members of legislatures. This distinction arises from the nature of governmental and electoral processes. Official data become available in several ways. First, official acts of the Government of Canada are published in the Canada Gazette, an official publication existing specifically for this purpose, and official acts of provinces are published in similar provincial publications. Thus notices of accession of Monarchs, of appointments of Governors General and Lieutenant-Governors, of establishment of portfolios or like posts and of the appointment of occupants, of the establishment of Royal Commissions and of the appointment of the commissioners, and of proclamation of elections and dissolution of parliament are published officially.
