RAF KENLEY AIRSHOW REPLACED BY SOUTHEND AIRSHOW! “75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN” TOUR Monday, 7th – Monday, 21st September, 2015 “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few” was spoken by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, referring to the ongoing efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who were at the time fighting the Battle of Britain (BoB), the pivotal air battle with the German Luftwaffe with Britain expecting a German invasion. Churchill first spoke his famous words upon his exit from 11 Fighter Group’s underground operations control centre at RAF Uxbridge which he visited on 16th August during the battle (which we visit on Day 3). Pictured left are Spitfire pilots of No 610 Squadron, at RAF Biggin Hill during September 1940. This 15‐day tour concentrates solely on the Battle, visiting various airfields, sites, monuments ‐ and 2 airshows ‐ commemorating what was a huge turning point not only of Great Britain’s and Europe’s history but that of the whole world. Had the battle been lost the world as we know it could have turned out very differently. Spitfire Pilots of No 610 Sqn, RAF Biggin Hill, Sep 1940 This fabulous tour will include: Solent Sky Museum (R.J. Mitchell Hall of Fame, designer of the Spitfire) RAF Tangmere ‐ Military Aviation Museum RAF Hawkinge ‐ Kent Battle of Britain Museum Capel‐le‐Ferne – National Memorial To The Few RAF Biggin Hill (optional visit to the Kent Spitfire Restoration Company) RAF Biggin Hill – St George’s RAF Chapel of Remembrance RAF Bentley

Negotiations with Eurotunnel for archaeological work connected with this, the largest ever privately-funded civil engineering venture in Europe, began at an early stage in the life of the project. A document containing all known information regarding sites of archaeological interest was prepared by English Heritage (November 1986)1 and these designated areas were assessed in the field during July and August 1987.

  • Railways List
A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened.

ANDREW MARTIN is an author, journalist and broadcaster. His previous books with Profile are Underground, Overground and Belles and Whistles. He has written for the Guardian, Evening Standard, Independent on Sunday, Daily Telegraph and New Statesman, amongst many others. His ‘Jim Stringer’ series of novels based around railways is published by Faber. His latest novel, Soot, is set in late eighteenth-century York. Praise for Night Trains ‘You do not have to be a trainspotter to enjoy this book. It is social history, a kind of epitaph to a way of travel that seems to be lost, at least in Europe.’ Spectator ‘A delightful book … charmingly combines Martin’s own travels, as he recreates journeys on famous trains such as the Orient Express, with a serious, occasionally geeky, history of those elegant wagons lits of the past … Even if you’re not into the detail of rail gauges, this book is the perfect companion as you wait for the 8.10 from Hove.’ Observer ‘Excellent … Mr Martin paints a vivid picture of this world on rails … he proves a witty companion who wears his knowledge lightly’ Country Life ‘Andrew Martin has cornered the train market. He is the Bard of the Buffer, the Balladeer of the Blue Train, the Laureate of Lost Property … I picked up Night Trains knowing that I would be entertained, but also in the hope that his many years of experience would teach me how to sleep on a sleeper … Andrew Martin is the best sort of travel writer: inquisitive, knowledgeable, lively, congenial. He is also very funny, while never letting the humour drive reality, rather than vice versa.

Conclusions 39 Appendix 1 41 2 Smart Growth UK __________________________________________________________________________ Smart Growth UK is an informal coalition of organisations and individuals who want to promote the Smart Growth approach to planning, transportation and communities. Smart Growth is an international movement dedicated to more sustainable approaches to these issues. In the UK it is based around a set of principles agreed by the organisations that support the Smart Growth UK coalition in 2013:- Urban areas work best when they are compact, with densities appropriate to local circumstances but generally significantly higher than low-density suburbia and avoiding high-rise. In addition to higher density, layouts are needed that prioritize walking, cycling and public transport so that they become the norm. We need to reduce our dependence on private motor vehicles by improving public transport, rail-based where possible, and concentrating development in urban areas. We should protect the countryside, farmland, natural beauty, open space, soil and biodiversity, avoiding urban sprawl and out-of-town development. We should protect and promote local distinctiveness and character and our heritage, respecting and making best use of historic buildings, street forms and settlement patterns.

National Arc F Kent Archives Offic Ch 46 Watts Charity MSS., 1579-1972 Deposited by Mr. Chinnery, Clerk to the Charity, Rochester, 1st May 1974, and 5th February, 1976 Catalogued by Alison Revell, June 1978 INTRODUCTION For information concerning the establishment of Watts's Charity, under Richard Watts of Rochester's will, in 1579 and its subsequent history, The Report of Commissioners for Inquiring Concerning Charities - Kent, 1815-39 Pp. 504-9, provides most of the basic facts. Other Rochester Charities are dealt with in the same Report (see pages 55-57, and 500-513). The Report also deals with various early legal cases concerning the Charity, and the uses to which its funds should be put, most notably the cases of the parishes of St. Margaret 's Rochester, and Strood, against the parishioners of St. Nicholas in 1680, and of the parishioners of Chatham against the Trustees of the Charity in 1808 (see L1-4B in this catalogue). The original will of Richard Watts, drawn up in 1579 and proved in the following year in the Consistory Court of Rochester, is kept in this Office under the catalogue mark, DRb PW12 (1579), with a registered copy in the volume of registered wills, DRb PWr 16 (ffl05-107). A copy is also catalogued in this collection as Ch46 L1A. Further Watts Charity material is found in the Dean and Chapter of Rochester MSS, under the KAO catalogue number, DRc Cl/1-65, and consists mainly of accounts of the Providers of the Poor of Rochester, between the years 1699 and 1819.

September has passed us by in a flash and here we are at the start of yet another month! The weather through the first Autumn month was kind to us and it has been good to see so many anglers out on the banks making the most of this glorious time of the year. I couldn't help but notice while out delivering the September magazines how the leaves had taken on their Autumnal colourings so early, indeed the leaf fall had already begun! Even the blackberries seemed to be in fruit very early. I picked a large bowl of them in mid August! They are in the freezer waiting for Mrs Reed to put them in an apple crumble! Mrs Reed and I enjoyed a lovely week in Cornwall and it was nice to get away for a few days.
