Riot Act (album) - Wikipedia Following a full-scale tour in support of their previous album, BinauralPearl Jam took a year-long Riot Act. The band reconvened in the beginning of and commenced work on a new album. The music on the album was diverse, including songs influenced by folkart rock Riot Act experimental rock. The lyrics deal with mortality Riot Act existentialism, with influence from both the political climate after the September 11, terrorist attacks and the accidental death of nine fans during Pearl Jam's performance at the Roskilde Festival. The band supported the album with a politically charged concert tour in Riot Act Act was the band's last album of all-new material for Epic. Producer Adam Kasper was brought in to work with the band on its seventh album. Kasper had engineered other Pearl Jam albums, and was brought to Riot Act following a suggestion by drummer Matt Cameronwho worked with Kasper on his previous groups Wellwater Conspiracy and Soundgarden. Similar to the process for Yield and Binauralband members worked on material individually before starting the recording sessions together. According to Gaspar, the song initially developed out of a jam session he had with Vedder in Hawaii shortly after the Riot Act first met. When they were Riot Act, Vedder asked Gaspar if he was "ready to go to Seattle. McCready described the recording environment as "a pretty positive one" and "very intense and spiritual. Riot Act features a diverse sound, including folk -based and experimental songs. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic said " Riot Act is the album that Pearl Jam has been wanting to make since Vitalogy —a muscular art rock record, one that still hits hard but that's filled with ragged edges and odd detours. The album's cover art, photographed by Ament, features two skeletons wearing crowns, suggesting the possibility that the two represent a king and a queen. The forged metal figurines were created by blacksmith Kelly Gilliam. Vedder suggested Riot Actand the band members went with it as they were tired with trying to come up with a title. He said, "I guess we were trying to come up with a title that reflected some of the music on the record, which we thought was urgent-sounding and kind of loud It just seemed to fit. The tours were the band's first with keyboardist Boom Gaspar. The trauma of Roskilde led the tour to lack performances on festivals and open floor venues. Riot Act band received much publicity for its energetic politically charged performances during the tour. In the review he stated that " Riot Act isn't one thing or the other: tracks such as "Ghost" or "Get Right" gesture towards hard rock without really putting the hammer down, while a more reflective piece like "All or None" doesn't exploit its own possibilities. The album's singles featured three B-sides from the Riot Act recording sessions that were not included on the album: "Down", "Undone" and "Other Side". All three were included on the Lost Dogs collection of rarities, although "Undone" appeared in a slightly different form. McCready said that "Down" came out lighter than intended, and was ultimately left off Riot Act because it did not fit with the other songs on the album. A recording of "Severed Hand", a song that appeared on the band's next studio album Pearl Jamwas attempted during the recording sessions; however the band only spent a few hours on the song before it was shelved. ROTHMAN; THE GAZETTE It was 11 p.m. when the house lights came up Tuesday at the Pepsi Center, but the guys in Pearl Jam weren't ready to vacate the stage. They weren't concerned that they were 15 minutes past curfew. After all, it was the start of their 2003 U.S. tour and they had barely begun the third song of their second encore. The crowd was equally determined to "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" for at least a few more minutes. The song, both in performance and in sentiment - "Take to the streets! Raise your voice!" - was a powerful ending to a night of varied content and mixed response. Amply sprinkled with tunes from their latest release, "Riot Act," the set list adequately represented the group's catalog, but the selection was clearly geared toward those fans dedicated enough to own albums after the debut "Ten" and follow-up "Vs." "Love Boat Captain," a touching tribute to the nine fans trampled when the band played in Denmark in 2000, opened the show slow and steady at 8:45 p.m. with the borrowed idea that "All you need is love." "Corduroy" and "Better Man" were obvious crowd-pleasers, and unsurprisingly those rare, older, bigger hits like "Even Flow," "Porch" and "Daughter" prompted sing-alongs. "I see you're into the song," frontman Eddie Vedder improvised during "Black," tying it in as if it were a standard lyric.
