Two weeks after Catherine Eddowes’ murder. Inside was half a human kidney preserved in wine, along with a letter. Medical tests could not prove if the kidney was Catherine’s or not, but they could prove that the kidney was human. Do you think this letter was genuine? What do you think George Lusks’ role was? Who is George Lusk? The Whitechapel Vigilance Committee chose George Lusk, a local builder as its leader. Lusk had his name up on posters around the Whitechapel area asking for information because he was the group’s leader. It made him the target of many practical jokers who sent letters pretending to be Jack the ripper. However many believed that the killer himself likely sent the legendary ‘From Hell’ letter that was sent with half a human kidney. Whilst many are convinced that the letter was definitely from Jack the Ripper, others are sure it was a hoax. Q1. What did George Lusk lead? Q2. What famous letter was addressed to him? Q3. Whitechapel Vigilance Committee George Lusk, local builder, and other local businessmen were frustrated by lack of action after murder of second victim Annie Chapman. The government refused to offer rewards through fear of encourage hoaxes so WVC organised it’s own reward system. Lusk and his friends walked the streets at night holding burning torches in order to find killer this frustrated Frank Abberline- CID investigator . Lusk received many letters from people pretending to be Jack the Ripper. The ‘From Hell’ letter received after the Double Event and contained a piece of kidney preserved in wine- many believed this belonged to Elizabeth Stride. Lusk however held on to the letter for several days as he believed it was just another fake.
