213 N. Talbot St. St. Michaels, MD 21663 410-745-2916 Cbmm.Org a Message from the Board by Diane J 2017–18 213 N. Talbot St. St. Michaels, MD 21663 410-745-2916 cbmm.org A Message from the Board by Diane J. Staley, 2018–2019 Chair It was an exciting and productive year for the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. There were significant initiatives in the areas of exhibitions, education, and the Shipyard that supported and deepened the impact of CBMM’s mission. Some highlights: • Our new exhibition, Exploring the Chesapeake: Mapping the Bay takes a comprehensive BOARD OF look at the different ways the Chesapeake Bay has been portrayed over time through mapping GOVERNORS and charting. The exploration begins with European exploration in the 16th century and 2017-2018 continues with the growth of settlement in the region in the 17th and 18th centuries. More James P. Harris, Chair than 40 maps and charts from CBMM’s permanent collections and several private collections Diane J. Staley, Vice Chair are included. Guests can also walk the length and breadth of the Bay on a giant floor map, or Richard W. Snowdon, Treasurer monitor the movement of commercial shipping through modern mapping technologies. Richard J. Bodorff, Secretary • Children’s educational programs continue to be an important focus. CBMM is a major Schuyler Benson Simon F. Cooper destination for K–12 field trips during which students learn about wooden boatbuilding, the William S. Dudley economics of the crabbing industry, and the ecology and heritage of the Chesapeake Bay. Len N. Foxwell Our Education Department has grown the number of student visits 44% to nearly 6,000 during Howard S. Freedlander the past school year. In addition, our after-school program for middle schoolers—Rising Tide— Dagmar D.P. Gipe Leeds Hackett develops youths’ applied and social skills through the vehicle of boatbuilding. Christopher A. Havener, Jr. Robert N. Hockaday, Jr. • CBMM’s Working Shipyard continues the long tradition of preserving, through historical Francis Hopkinson, Jr. methods, our many wooden vessels and extensive historic small craft collection. Our Richard J. Johnson shipwrights and apprentices are a tangible connection to the Chesapeake’s rich story of Alice Kreindler Deborah Lawrence boatbuilding. A centerpiece of the Shipyard is the log-hull restoration of the Queen of our Fleet, Kathleen Linehan the 1889 bugeye Edna E. Lockwood, taking place in full public view in the Shipyard. Follow her Frank C. Marshall progress in person or online at ednalockwood.org. Donald L. Martin Patrice Miller Vision and trajectory are two words I use repeatedly when asked to describe the future of CBMM. Elizabeth C. Moose Talli Oxnam More than 50 years ago, a small group founded CBMM with a broad vision of telling the stories of Charles A. Robertson the entire Chesapeake Bay tidewater region and its water-dependent culture. Continuing the spirit D. Bruce Rogers and commitment of CBMM’s founders, we recently developed a campus-wide Master Plan. This Lelde Schmitz plan, to support CBMM’s mission and world-class maritime museum status, will increase space Alfred Tyler II Susan E. Wheeler for our core capabilities—exhibitions, education, and the Shipyard. The plan is also designed to Carolyn H. Williams greatly enhance the guest experience, including a new welcome and orientation building, expanded Kristen L. Greenaway, President parking, and upgraded facilities and landscaping throughout campus. EMERITI Richard T. Allen This important initiative puts CBMM on an exciting trajectory. Our finances are strong, our CG Appleby programs are growing, and our reputation as a major cultural institution continues to expand. Alan R. Griffith Margaret D. Keller Finally, some thanks. First, I would like to acknowledge Jim Harris, who served for two years as Richard H. Kimberly Charles L. Lea, Jr. our Chair of the Board. Jim’s strategic focus, his commitment to CBMM, and his quest to move D. Ted Lewers, MD the organization forward resulted in programs and guidance that will benefit us for years to come. Fred C. Meendsen Thanks also for your support of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum—whether you’re a member, John C. It incorporates comparable data from the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I, and the Elizabeth I. Much of the analysis is quantitative in nature: chapters compare the appointments of justices of the peace during the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, and reveal that purges of the commissions of the peace were far more common than is generally believed. Furthermore, purges appear to have been religiously- based, especially during the reign of Elizabeth I. There is a gap in the quantitative data beginning in 1569, only eleven years into Elizabeth I’s reign, which continues until 1584. In an effort to compensate for the loss of quantitative data, this dissertation analyzes a different primary source, William Lambarde’s guidebook for JPs, Eirenarcha. The fourth chapter makes particular use of Eirenarcha, exploring required duties both in and out of session, what technical and personal qualities were expected of JPs, and how well they lived up to them.

Richard III and the House of Dudley BARRIE WILLIAMS AT HIS CORONATION on 6 July 1483, Richard III was escorted on his right hand by William Dudley, Bishop of Durham. The role is one which traditionally belongs to the palatine bishop, but in this instance it was more than symbolic: the Bishop and his family had earned it by their services to the House of York. The Dudleys rose to power over two centuries in the late middle ages. There is uncertainty about their origins. The family originally bore the surname Sutton, and they probably came from Sutton-upon-Trent, Nottinghamshire. The first member of the familyon' whom the sources seem to agree was Richard de Sutton, who married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of William Patric, Lord of Malpas, though his dates are uncertain. The family acquired claim to the surname and lordship of Dudley through the marriage of John de Sutton with Margaret de Somery, eldest daughter of the previous Baron Dudley. Chronology only becomes certain with Sir Richard Sutton, lord of the manor of Worksop in 1307, who is recorded as being in the retinue of John de Somery, father of Margaret, in 1319. The family lost the Dudley estates for alleged complicity in Thomas of Lancaster's rebellion in 1321. They recovered them under Edward 111, under whom the head of the family was summoned to parliament as Baron Dudley — an honour not repeated until 1440.l Six successive heads of the family in the fourteenth century were known as John de Sutton alias Dudley. The sixth of that name, who really established the family fortunes, was born on Christmas day 1400 and was baptised at Barton- under-Needwood, Derbyshire.
