  • The Futurama Theorem1 Adapted for the Philadelphia Math Teacher’S Circle by Cheryl Grood
The Futurama Theorem1 adapted for the Philadelphia Math Teacher’s Circle by Cheryl Grood Appetizer: Background: This problem (and its solution) appeared in “The Prisoner of Benda,” which is episode 7.10 of the television show Futurama. The episode’s writer, Ken Keeler, has a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Harvard. (In fact, several of the writers on Futurama hold advanced degrees in mathematics, physics, and computer science!) Keeler discovered/proved this theorem entirely as a means to get the characters out of the complicated situation he had written them into. Ken Keeler won the Writers Guild of America Best Television Writing in Animation award in 2010 for this episode. The setup: Two characters (Professor Farnsworth and Amy) decide to try out their newly- finished “Mind-Switcher” invention on themselves. (“We’re just the people this Mind-Switcher was made for by us!”) A brief montage of hilarity ensues. When they try to switch back, they discover a key flaw in the machine’s design: it will not allow the same pair of bodies to be used in the machine more than once. [clip from show, time stamp 3:33 ! 3:55] The fundamental problem: Is there a way (given the limitations of the machine; ie, no cheating by inventing a better machine!) to restore their minds back to their original bodies? The Amy/Professor pair can never re-enter the machine together, but what if they were able to get one or more unsuspecting stooges to enter the machine? Question: Can all correct mind-body pairings be restored with the help of just one other character? Solution: No.

  • Futurama Comedy and Writers in the Classroom Sarah J
Klein’s Beer: Futurama Comedy and Writers in the Classroom Sarah J. Greenwald Appalachian State University Introduction Futurama [1] is an animated science fiction comedy with math, science, or programming jokes in almost every television episode. In the same way that history can provide context to mathematics in the classroom, the rich mathematical history of the show’s writers and the stories of their writing motivations can engage students. A combination of comedy references from the show and quotes from the writers is especially effective in helping to alleviate math anxiety and motivate students to learn and connect to mathematics. In this article we will examine numerous Futurama activities for the classroom, including discussions related to the writers and the representation of mathematics in popular culture, as well as activities related to humorous Futurama math references, including computational number theory and geometry. Figure 1: Klein’s Beer [1, 3ACV12 (The Route of All Evil)] Writers and Humor in the Classroom In the course of earning an undergraduate degree in the mathematical sciences, students study a broad range of mathematical techniques and disciplines. The need to master the fundamental skills of mathematics leads in many instances to a perspective in which mathematics exists unconnected to anything else. Students can become so focused on the present that they perceive mathematics as “closed, dead, emotionless, all discovered... [Teachers] can rescue students from the island of mathematics and relocate them on the mainland of life that contains mathematics that is open, alive, full of emotion, and always interesting” [3]. In the same way that real-life applications and technology can help students connect to mathematics, humorous popular culture references and the related history of the writers who create them can also foster connections.

Title: Simpsorama 09 Nov After the Springfieldians have buried a time capsule a freak storm brings Bender, the robot from 'Futurama' from the future to kill Homer but Simpsons Comics Simpsorama befriends him instead. Other Futurama characters then appear and point out that they must kill Simpsons Comics Simpsorama because, due to the time capsule, he has given rise to mutant rabbits which will destroy New New York. The answer is for the Simpsons to go into the future and round up the mutants and send them into space. Written by don minifie Simpsorama is a fantastic Simpsons episode with a very well written storyline and a ton of hilarious scenes. I was completely entertained from start to finish, and I know people say that crossovers are usually cheesy and mediocre ways of bringing two different franchises together, but this certainly wasn't. Simpsons Comics Simpsorama am a huge fan of both the Simpsons and Futurama, they are both created by Matt Groening and the humour is very similar so it didn't feel like they were bringing Simpsons Comics Simpsorama shows together that have little in common. It was truly magical seeing characters such as Homer and Bender interact and I have high hopes that they make more Simpsorama's in the future,I would be perfectly fine if they wanted to make one every year, the same way they do with Treehouse of Horror,it would be a great way to keep Fry and the gang alive and it would be something cool and different for the Simpsons to do.

Title: The Language of the Postpostmodernist City: Futurama’s New New York City Abstract In order to exemplify the literary functioning of the prospective fiction, television series Futurama is chosen, and more precisely the city of New New York, which represents the parody of the real New York and therefore the parody of every big occidental city.

  • Is Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth a Scientist? Fictional Entities, Natural Kinds, and a Justified Contradiction1
This is a revised version of this essay which used to be 28 pages. Feel free to contact me for the original submission or any other queries at [email protected] Is Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth a Scientist? fictional entities, natural kinds, and a justified contradiction1 I. Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth I aim to focus this paper on understanding empty names in the theme of natural kind distinctions. I take a kind distinction to mean a kinder is kinding and categorically separating from other things ~x, things x by properties that the thing x shares with other things x that are members.2 The kind would be the set that the property sharers are members of. So, a kind as an example can be the set of things with four legs. Lassie has four legs, so that makes her an x. The table on which my laptop is placed as I write this sentence (its name is Jean Paul Sartre) also has four legs, so it is an x. Oscar Pistorius does not have legs, which makes him a ~x. This category would be too broad to be sufficient since there are an infinity of sets we could make. Four-leggedness would not constitute natural kinds. I think a natural kind (if there are such things) is a set that is distinct from other sets by meaningful distinctions of certain properties. By meaningfully distinct of certain properties, I mean to say that the kind x cannot be the kind x without some specific properties or it would be a ~x.

  • Prisoner of Benda (Challenge)
Prisoner of Benda (Challenge) Daniel enjoys watching TV series. One of his favourite is Futurama. One episode has the following plot. Professor Farnsworth switches bodies with Amy using a new invention so that he can relive his youth. Likewise, Amy is reminiscent of her younger days of constantly eating and wishes to use the Professor's skinny body to gorge herself with food once again. Later, they find they cannot switch their bodies back with each other, because the device will not operate on the same pairing of bodies. The Professor thoughtlessly suggests they might be able to switch back to their original bodies with a third person. Bender switches bodies with the Professor (Amy's body) so he can perform a robbery without being identified. After realizing his mistake, the Professor, now in Bender's body, tires of trying to solve the problem. He decides to live a life of daring stunts and joins a robot circus. Bender, now in Amy's body, is caught aboard the yacht of Robo-Hungarian emperor Nikolai. When Bender states that he is really a robot who has switched bodies with a human, Nikolai reveals that he feels trapped by his wealth and wishes to live the life of a normal, "peasant" robot. Bender tricks him into switching bodies with a robot wash bucket and inhabits Nikolai's body, planning to live like an emperor. However, he discovers that Nikolai's fiancée and first officer are plotting to kill him. Bender is saved with the assistance of the Professor and the circus' loyal Robo-Hungarian citizens.

THE LOST BOY Leda Hayes A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2017 Committee: Becca Cragin, Advisor Jeremy Wallach Esther Clinton Jeffrey Brown © 2017 Leda Hayes All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Becca Cragin, Advisor The following thesis seeks to contribute to contemporary masculinities scholarship by exploring the recent deployment, on and among 20th and 21st century MIC telecommunications, of the myth of the lost boy. It begins with a close look at the origin of the myth of the lost boy, a form first authored as a revision to modernity’s myth of the boy by New Imperialists who sought to justify the long term occupation of colonial territories and protectorates and thus shifted, away from an earlier model of domestic masculinity that pressed forward towards an exhaustive known, rational, and developed; and towards a model of masculinity that was restricted to a Bakhtinian adventure time of serial story, homosocial partnership, and performances of primal boyhood. After a subsequent exploration of the medium and mandates of MIC synergy, that utilizes Marshall McLuhan’s science of medium, this thesis offers that a late 20th and early 21st century community among such Futurama discovers, within the lost boy 2.0 it embraces, a configuration of masculinity that can remasculinize Futurama’s dogma of networked node. While the myth of the lost boy is often popularly proposed to be problematic, detached, and disordered, my research suggests that the myth is instead a restorative configuration that discovers the model of network within Futurama to be inspired by an organic, empowered masculine affection: far from lost, the lost boy of 2017 is the heart of labor, kinship, narrative, and life.
