Preview Only Early One Morning Traditional English Folk Song Arranged by David Marlatt This folk song is particularly notable for its use in a number of well known folk-song arrangements, for example its usage in the opening bars of the BBC Radio 4 UK Theme by Fritz Spiegl, which until April 2006 was played every morning at 5:30 a.m. Another notable arrangement of the song is by the English composer Benjamin Britten. Perhaps the most gentle yet long lived use of this tune rests with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) children's programme The Friendly Giant which aired between 1958 to 1985 and used Early One Morning as its introductory theme. The music was played on recorder by Bob Homme, who passed away in May 2000. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_One_Morning Early one morning, Just as the sun was rising, I heard a young maid sing, In the valley below. CHORUS: Oh, don't deceive me, Oh, never leave me, PREVIEWHow could you use ONLY A poor maiden so? Remember the vows, That you made to your Mary, Remember the bow'r, Where you vowed to be true, Chorus Oh Gay is the garland, And fresh are the roses, I've culled from the garden, To place upon thy brow. Chorus Thus sang the poor maiden, Her sorrows bewailing, Thus sang the poor maid, In the valley below. The Company that Taught the World to Sing: Coca-Cola, Globalization, and the Cultural Politics of Branding in the Twentieth Century by Laura A. Hymson A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (American Culture) in The University of Michigan 2011 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor, James W. Cook, Chair Professor Philip J. Deloria Professor Susan J. Douglass Professor Penny Von Eschen © Laura A. Hymson 2011 Acknowledgements I owe an extraordinary debt to the people and institutions that helped and supported me as I worked to complete this dissertation. While working on this project, I spent time in several cities, including: Ann Arbor, New York, Atlanta, Urbana- Champagne, Alexandria, Washington, D.C, Newark, and Hartford. In all of these places where I have lived, researched, or taught, I have been shown incredible kindness and I am grateful for everyone who has helped me along the way. Thanks first to the chair of my dissertation committee, Jay Cook, who has been exceptionally generous with his time. Without his insightful feedback, invaluable advice, and thoughtful comments this dissertation would not have been possible. I can only hope to be as effective and compassionate as a teacher and mentor as he has been to me. My entire dissertation committee was composed of scholars whose work I truly admire and I am grateful for the time they devoted to my ideas and my work. Penny Von Eschen and Phil Deloria provided important feedback on drafts, and made suggestions for research and writing that helped advance my thinking on a number key issues at the heart of this project.

  • BBC Radio in the Digital Era (1982 - ) Professor Jeremy Summerly
BBC Radio in the Digital Era (1982 - ) Professor Jeremy Summerly 15 April 2021 On Hallowe’en in 1981, Paul Vaughan became the presenter of Radio 3’s Record Review. Vaughan took over from John Lade (the programme’s founder-presenter) who had presented exactly 1,000 editions of the programme. Lade had led his listeners from 78s to LPs and Vaughan ushered in the CD era. Since its very first episode in 1957, ‘Building a Library’ has been at the heart of Record Review (re-named CD Review from 1998 until 2015). For most of its history ‘Building a Library’ has been a pre-recorded monologue punctuated by comparative musical examples, but on 22 March 2014 it was broadcast as a two-way live interview with presenter Andrew McGregor from a pop-up studio in London’s Southbank Centre. Thus, I was the first contributor to deliver ‘Building a Library’ live (having worked as a freelance contributor to the programme since 1992). On that spring morning in 2014, I chose Trevor Pinnock’s 1993 recording of Mozart’s Coronation Mass over the 1971 version by the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis. A group of dedicated CD Review listeners had congregated around the BBC pod to witness the live broadcast of the programme, and during the course of the segment they started to react to my analytical observations with muted applause and/or good-natured hisses of disapproval. That direct contact with the CD Review audience was a wonderful experience, albeit a predictably confirmatory one: Radio 3’s audience has an average age of around 60 years old, and that was borne out that morning in the Royal Festival Hall foyer.

  • Defining the Nation and Confining the Musician: the Case of Irish Traditional Music
Defining the Nation and Confining the Musician: The Case of Irish Traditional Music HELEN O'SHEA When a Swedish company performs The Magic Flute , or a children’s orchestra from Venezuela plays a Vivaldi concerto, or a Japanese soprano sings Schubert, audiences pay little attention to the correspondence or otherwise between the performer’s nationality and that of the composer, even when the music they play is linked to nationality, as in versions of German Volkslieder . When a French musician plays the kora or a Swede sings rai , however, these performances are more likely to be evaluated in terms of the musicians’ nationality or ethnicity. In world music scenes, in particular, authenticity is defined as much by the ethnicity and nationality of the performers as it is by the faithfulness of their performance to earlier models and masters. These comparisons from the differing scenes of art music and world music provide a starting point for challenging assumptions that music “of the people,” whether it is performed by tradition bearers, world music enthusiasts, or Western art musicians, inevitably expresses the collective character of that people. In what follows I use a well-known song to exemplify the processes by which meanings become attached to musical texts. I hope to demonstrate that such meanings do not inhere in the musical texts themselves but in the discourses within which they are retrieved, revised, performed, and received, as well as in the literary texts (lyrics) with which they are linked. Using the case of Irish traditional music, I demonstrate some of the ways in which musical texts may acquire an affective language and a gendered discourse based on colonial stereotypes, and how the values embedded in these discourses may be inverted within anti-colonial movements.
