BETH SHALOM RECEIVES USCJ SCHECHTER AWARD

The USCJ Schechter Awards were given to only 12 congregations throughout the country and Canada at the USCJ International Convention held in Atlanta in December. These awards recognize innovative programs in prayer, programming, and Israel education.

Congregation Beth Shalom’s Religious school led by Linda Zimmerman, was proud to be one of the 12 congregations honored. We were recognized for our 2016-2017 Teen Scene program which incorporated material from the Institute for the Study of Modern Israel at Emory, as well as the videos and instructional material from the Jerusalem U/Stand Up for Israel program. The course explored Israel’s unique complexities, accomplishments and values. It inspires our teens to form a relationship with Israel, her people, and her heritage, as well as give them the tools they will need to respond to the voices that they will come into contact with, if not in high school, almost assuredly on their college campus.

Our instructors, Edye Nechmad, past VP of Education and Rich Walter, the Associate Director of Israel Education for the Center for Israel Education at Emory used videos featuring some of the Jewish world’s most revered thought leaders, as well as classroom discussions to instruct the teens on the modern history of the State of Israel and to learn how to become advocates for Israel as they become our future leaders. FROM OUR CO-VPS OF RITUAL

Don’t let the recent run of freezing temperatures fool you, Spring is just around the corner. Soon, it will be Purim time. Purim is an underappreciated holiday (and uncharacteristically rowdy for Jewish festivals.) Tradition provides four mitzvot for Purim:

Reading the Megillah – the Megillah reading is not like a traditional Torah reading. It is a festive retelling of the story of Esther with raucous uproars to blot out the name of Haman. Come casual and come ready to make some noise (and come in costume if you are so inclined.) Mishloach Manot - giving of gifts, traditionally gifts of food to friends and acquaintances. Break out those favorite recipies (it doesn’t HAVE to be Hamantaschen) The Seudah, or festive meal – what Jewish celebration is complete without a festive meal? Purim is no exception. But the custom on Purim is that the Seudah include indulgences, and eating and drinking in abundance. Matanot L'evyonim - giving to those in need. Purim is a time of joy and festivities, especially of food and drink. It is during this time that Jewish tradition teaches us to be mindful of those who are in need of basic necessities so that we may help make everyone’s life joyous.

There are Purim plays, carnivals, masquerades and lots of opportunities to connect with friends old and new. Take this opportunity to experience a different kind of Jewish holiday and connect with the community and Jewish history in an untraditional way.

Sisterhood and FROM THE SISTERHOOD Women’s Voices

Here we are almost at Purim, a time in the Jewish calendar that honors the heroine Esther, a woman who singlehandedly saved the Jews from destruction. And yes, here we are in 2018 when women have captured national attention politically and culturally for their “Me Too” movement. It turns out that 2017, like that time long ago in Persia, unexpectedly belonged to women who stood up and claimed a voice thus changing the course of events. And yes, if you attend a Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood event, you will meet and hear strong voices speaking up for the work of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism.

You heard our voices at our wonderful paid up membership evening back in November expertly arranged by Merice Kraar , Diane Rich, Peggy Florence, and Rene Berg. Ellen Levy directed the crowd in making lovely challah covers. Many thanks to the women who tied it all together: Lisa Sturt, Terrie Bryan, Donna Salus, Jody Kassel, Rene Montaigne, Cheryl Garfinkel, Robyn Anshell, Sherron Lazarus, Randi Strumlauf, Helene Urbaitel and Roberta London.

You heard our voices at the annual Sisterhood Shabbat, reading Torah and Haftorah, leading all the prayers. Thanks to Marsha Fish and Linda Zimmerman for organizing this wonderful weekend.

You heard our voices cooking and preparing a meal for Rebecca’s Tent, the women’s shelter at Congregation Shearith Israel, and playing bingo with the seniors at the Jewish Home. Thank you Robyn Anshell for tackling these projects.

And at every meeting, you hear strong voices discussing budgets and finance, membership, programs, managing a gift shop and a kitchen. Women deliberate T’kun Olam, how to help others in our Jewish community and beyond. There is a place for all women in our Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood. Please come and find your niche and your voice in Sisterhood.

Join us for a fabulous and fun filled evening on February 10th of “Wine and Live Music” benefitting Torah Fund. Following Havdalah, we will learn about reds, whites, dry and sweet kosher wines while enjoying appetizers and des- serts, door prizes and great dancing music. Eileen Cohn, Randi Strumlauf, and Clara Safra are designing a terrific night out on the town for us all!

Then, highlight Tuesday March 6th for “Passover Cooking with Jan” (our own Jan Adler) as she prepares some of her Passover specialties. And we get to try them!

There is something in Sisterhood for everyone. Won’t you support the women of CBS and lend your voice in build- ing a stronger synagogue, a more pluralistic Judaism, and a better world?

Winner of multiple awards and acclaimed by audiences around the world, Praying with Lior asks whether someone with Down syndrome can be a “spiritual genius”. Many believe Lior is close to God – at least that is what his family and community believe – though he is also a burden, a best friend, an inspiration and an embarrassment, depending on who is asked and when. As this moving and entertaining documentary moves to its climax, Lior must pass through the gateway to manhood – his Bar Mitzvah! FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF LIFE LONG LEARNING

Chag Purim Sameach! Yes, Purim is right around the corner. It is hard to believe that it is already February. Our Purim Carnival Committee, led by Jodi Frankel, has already been hard at work planning another fabulous carnival with games, balloon artists, raffles, and great food. School will end at 11:30am on February 25th, the day of the Purim Carnival, so the fun can start earlier. Parents are requested to pick up your children in their classrooms. There will be no carpool that day. And the fun does not end there. Please join us on Wednesday evening, February 28th, Erev Purim, for a complimentary dairy dinner starting at 5:30 pm and a children’s Megillah reading and costume parade at 6:15 pm. The Purim Spiel, put on by our fabulous USY Players, and the full Megillah reading will begin at 7:00pm.

February has been designated Jewish Disability Awareness Month. While we should work toward a more inclusive world throughout the year, this month reminds us of the importance of teaching our community respect and acceptance of all people. Our Gilner Religious School students will take time out of their busy schedules throughout the month of February to participate in age appropriate ability awareness programs. And our Kehillah will recognize the gifts members with disabilities bring to our congregation during Shabbat services on Saturday, February 10th.

On Friday night, March 9th, at 6:30 pm our 3rd grade students will lead parts of the Friday night service and will receive their siddurim which will be beautifully decorated by their parents. This is a very special evening and the community is invited to take part in this milestone.

Please remember to read your weekly Director’s Newsletter that comes to your Inbox every Friday. It can also be found on our synagogue website under the Education tab. It is always filled with useful information about upcoming programming in the school, youth department programs, and other events of interest for parents. It is amazing how much happens on a weekly basis in our building. Here are some of the upcoming dates to remember:

February 4th World Wide Wrap – Our GRS 5th, 6th, 7th grade students will lead the Sunday morning minyan wear- ing their handmade tefillin. Following services the students will entertain us with their “Wrap” songs and then enjoy a wonderful lunch prepared by our Men’s Club. All are invited. February 9th Kitah Vav (6th) will lead the Friday night service followed by a potluck dinner. February 25th Purim Carnival February 28th Erev Purim Megillah Reading March 3rd Shabbat School Day March 9th Third Grade Siddur Presentation March 25th Pesach Model Seders

You do not have to be in our Gilner Religious School to enjoy the fun. Just let us know if you want your children to participate in any of these experiential programs.

B’Shalom

Linda Zimmerman Director of Lifelong Learning

“MATCHING GIFT” PROGRAM Do you work for a company that participates in a “Matching” Gift Program?

Employee matching gift programs are corporate giving programs in which the company matches donations made by employees to eligible non-profit organizations.

It’s an easy way to double your contribution to us!

We currently have several congregants whose companies are matching their gifts to Beth Shalom. Requesting a matching gift is normally a five minute process which must be initiated by you to see if your company participates.

For more information contact Loli Gross, Executive Director at 770-399-5300. Page 21 FROMFROM OUR OUR DIRECTOR DIRECTOR OF OF EARLY CHILDHOODEARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION LEARNING

We had so much going on in January and so much to look forward to in February as well…

The Alefbet Preschool had an awesome Sunday Funday event in January – so many families, new and old, that joined us for a wintery morning fun with snow activities galore. A great way to start the new solar year.

Camp Alefbet registration is here! New weekly themes, new fun and flexible hours/days/weeks available. Starting June 4th – for ages one years old and older. Explore our weekly themes in a hands-on, sensory, creative way – our educators are our ‘head’ counselors too!

Fall Registration for the 2018-19 Alefbet Preschool year is also here! We are the preschool that fosters a strong foundation for social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and physical growth. We are the preschool that models and builds Kavod (respect), Chesed (kindness), Tzedakah (justice, charity) and Ahava (love) all in a warm, challenging, inclusive and creative Jewish environment. We have so much more information about The Alefbet Preschool on our website alefbetpreschool.com.

This year, Tu B’shevat (the new year of the trees) will be extra special because the Chattahoochee Nature Center will be celebrating with us! They are the local experts about plants, trees and yes even animals that call trees their home. A naturalist will be visiting us and bringing storybooks, plant activities and real animals to help us learn about the relationships between people, plants and animals. As I said, a very special Tu B’shevat indeed. Join us for “The Joys and Oys of Jewish Parenting: Insights and Wisdom for the Jewish Texts” presented by co-author Dr Marilynn Gottman. It is on Sunday, Feb 11th 10:00-11:30 am and it is FREE BUT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! Please go to beth shalom’s website or the Alefbet Preschool’s website to register. This should be an interesting and very informative parent/grandparent class – don’t miss it!

Lastly, Purim at the Alefbet Preschool is the most joyous time… This is the time where loud noises, marching, stomping, dancing and costume wearing is encouraged! For Purim, each child invites a special VIP to come and spend some of the morning with them here and join us in singing, reading from our children’s megillah, noshing on hamantashen and celebrating Purim together. We can’t wait!

This is a little insight into our months activities. We love sharing our preschool – come learn more about us. Con- tact Risa Walter, Director of Early Childhood Education 770.399.7622/[email protected]

Be HAPPY, the month of Adar is almost here! Risa Walter Pre-K Open House Come learn all about our Pre-K program Tuesday, January 30th 7:00-8:00 pm

We know Kindergarten expectations and developmentally appropriate practices. Come see how our Pre-K yeladim grow and prepare for the world of Kindergarten!

Risa Walter, Director and Kimhi, Pre-K educator will be leading this program.

Know anyone interested in discovering more about our Pre-K program? Invite them too!

Please RSVP 770.399.7622 or [email protected]

Page 22 FROM OUR YOUTH DIRECTOR

It’s almost spring! I haven’t decided if I’m more excited for all of our activities or for warm weather. We have so many incredible events in the first few months of the New Year and so many chances for our youth department members to spend time together.

There are a few big ticket items that we are already working on. Be on the lookout for an email regarding the Youth Department Mishloach Manot bags from Happy Purim.com. Each member in the shul will receive one Mishloach Manot bag per family. This fundraiser is a great and easy way to support the Youth Department and spread your Purim cheer! The email you receive will have a unique login for you and will explain in detail how to navigate the website. The youth commission and I will be there along the way if you should have questions about the Mishloach Manot bags.

A big Thank you is in order to our Youth Chair, Alyson Levin, our Youth Chair Emeritus, Lucy Moses, and our Happy Purim. Com Webmaster, Sherie Green, for organizing our Mishloach Manot bags! Our parents are the driving force of the youth department and we are so lucky to have these wonderful volunteers.

Mark your calendars for March 3th, which is Youth Shabbat. On that day, our youth will lead the entire Saturday morning service. They will read from the Torah, chant the Haftarah portion etc. This is a great day and also a great opportunity for those who are preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs to practice certain aspects of the service. All youth are welcome to participate in this day. You do NOT need to be a member of the youth department to participate. Please email me if your child is interested in participating.

As usual, the youth department never slows down! This semester is going to be jam-packed with events, hang out sessions and conventions. Be on the lookout for more information and flyers for different events. We’re so excited to see you and we hope to see a few new faces in this New Year! B’Shalom, Ryan Tourial

POWER OF ONE Sunday, February 11th 5:30pm to 7:30pm

We are thrilled that Beth Shalom members,Terrie & Alan Bryan, have been selected to be honored at the Power of One Reception during Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month in February.

The Power of One event honors individuals in the Atlanta community who have made an impact at their organizations and synagogues on inclusion of people with disabilities. The Bryans have been nominated because one person can make a huge difference and their efforts should not go unnoticed.
