Exhibitions are the key to development Interview with Farid Mamedov, Executive Director of Iteca Caspian

Exhibitions have already become the one of the integral parts industry professionals. A lot depended on the enthusiasm of the of the economic life of Azerbaijan. Every year, more than people that believed in this business and its benefit to the country. 30 exhibitions take place in the capital and act as a litmus Many things have changed over twenty years. Today, there are paper for the state of particular industries. We spoke about over 20 exhibitions a year, we have an established infrastructure the prospects for the development of exhibition industry in the and the exhibitors can use a professional exhibition platform - country with Farid Mamedov, Director of Iteca Caspian, the the Baku Expo Center, which was designed and constructed in leading exhibition organiser in Azerbaijan. accordance with high international standards.

Mr Mamedov, specialised trade exhibitions have taken From the beginning of each exhibition, our aim was to turn place in Azerbaijan for over 20 years. You were there at every exhibition into the main event in the industry of the the very beginning. What has changed over this time and Caspian region and we have managed to achieve this. and 30000 visitors were at the exhibitions organized by Iteca Caspian in Azerbaijan. These numbers cannot be anything but pleasing. But we are not standing in one place.

Today, economic development is not so much growth in quantity, but a growth in quality. We strive to discover and develop new opportunities for development and to demonstrate the great potential of Azerbaijan to the global economic community. I would especially like to note that from the first days of our activity in Azerbaijan we have felt tangible and active support from the leadership of the Republic, who pay great attention to the development of exhibitions in Azerbaijan. We also work closely together with industry related state bodies, which give all kinds of assistance to the exhibitions, sometimes acting as the initiator of new exhibitions or conferences. This is why I think that the exhibition business is dynamically developing together with the whole national economy and there are only bright prospects for the future.

In what way does the organisation of exhibitions influence the development of the country? Could it be said that exhibitions and conferences are a necessary part of a developed economic system? The leading exhibitions have a significant effect on the development of industries and the economy of the whole region in which they are held, making a contribution to the economy of the country. Business events such as exhibitions are the most effective tool for the search for new clients and markets and increasing the geography of sales for exhibiting companies. The exhibitions stimulate competition and create additional jobs. The organisation of the exhibition provides profits to a whole range of companies that provide various services place where professionals from different countries can meet. as well as the organisers themselves. These include stand It is where the market is concentrated, which results in a construction companies, transport companies, advertising deep understanding of the current situation and prospects for agencies, companies that provide specialised personnel and development and new ideas are generated. Of course, the many others. Another significant source of monetary funds effect of the exhibition is not just concentrated in Baku but for the economy of the country in the exhibition period is also includes the regions of Azerbaijan. the spending by visitors to the capital during the exhibitions, including accommodation, food, transport and entertainment. Exhibitions are one of the most important tools for regional development that facilitate increases in the competitiveness I would also like to mention another important point. The and growth of regional business, the development of visits made by leading industry specialists to international infrastructure, the creation of jobs, introduction of new exhibitions helps to develop the perception of the country as developments and the attraction of investments, which results a centre for business communications in this industry, which in an increase in tax contributions and the growth in the has a positive effect on its image. This is why I think that the volume of gross regional product. Another issue is whether exhibition and conference business definitely helps economic one region or another is prepared for the organization of an development and has a significant part to play in the process exhibition. Right now, there is a tendency for the regions to of introducing innovations into local production and the become active exhibitors at the exhibitions in Baku. development of intercultural links. We already have positive experiences of organizing exhibitions At the moment, all exhibitions in Azerbaijan are in the regions. We organized the West Azerbaijan Infrastructure concentrated in the capital. Are you planning to develop regional exhibition in Ganja in the autumn of 2007, 2008 exhibitions and fairs in the regions of Azerbaijan? and 2010. The analysis of strengths and weaknesses should cover such matters as: the national or local reputation of the organization, pay, employee benefits and working conditions, the intrinsic interest of the job, security of employment, opportunities for education and training, career prospects, and the location of the office or site. The second, identification of sources of candidates is vital. Despite the fact that many different sources have been mentioned above, the most appropriate method would be to consider internal candidates first. Recruiting internally is always advantageous to both the company and employees. The company avoids spending additional time teaching new employees about company’s culture and products, and employees get promotions, leading to their motivation and commitment. social networking is an important tool for recruiting, retaining and managing employees (Achievers, 2013). The biggest “E-recruitment” advantage from using social media is having access to a very wide pool of specialists. You may review their profiles and read Coming back to the modern recruitment methods, online recommendations straight away. At best, the financial institution would secure its existing level of operations and avoid sanctions or isolation from global financial system.

Legal hindrances The stand-out and, arguably, most critical legal hindrance concerns the principle of “bank secrecy”, given that financial institutions are not allowed to disclose their customers’ individual or commercial information, with the exception of certain cases specifically provided for in the relevant legislation.

This issue may be best illustrated by the relevant requirements applicable to banking sector in Azerbaijan. Thus, Azerbaijani banking legislation envisages that information on bank account, account transactions, account balance, as well as information on the client (account holder) and his/her address shall be treated as confidential and bank guarantees its secrecy.3 In addition, the relevant legislation stipulates list of persons, who information representing bank secrecy can be disclosed to:
