Knight Spring 2009 (This document last revised February 3, 2009) 1 The Early Eighteenth Dynasty The expulsion of the Hyksos was completed by Ahmose, thought by most Egyptologists to be the son of Seqenenre Ta'o II and the younger brother of Kamose. Ahmose brought order and unity to Egypt once more and drove the ruling Hyksos Fifteenth and Sixteenth Dynasties out of the land. He also gave great honors to the women of his family: his mother Queen Tetisheri, and his wife Queen Ahmose-Nefertari were regarded highly for generations to come. His son Amenhotep I, together with Ahmose-Nefertari, was actually worshipped as a god centuries later, as the protector of the royal cemeteries near Thebes. Amenhotep was succeeded by Thutmose I, who abandoned the Seventeenth Dynasty cemetery at Dra Abu el Naga in favor of a nearby valley. Thutmose's architect Ineni recorded that \I supervised the excavation of the cliff tomb of His Majesty alone, no one seeing, no one hearing."1 The valley became the burial site of choice for the rest of the New Kingdom pharaohs, as well as those courtiers (and even pets) whom they particularly favored, and is known to us today as the Valley of the Kings. Thutmose was succeeded by his son, Thutmose II. When Thutmose II died, he was succeeded by his second wife, Hatshepsut, the stepmother of the young heir, Thutmose III. Hatshepsut is perhaps the best-known of all the female pharaohs, with the possible exception of Cleopatra VII.

Although substantial evidence for this period has been preserved, it is inconclusive on many important details. Nonetheless, the revolutionary nature of Akhenaten’s rule is salient to the modern student of ancient Egypt. The king’s devotion to and promotion of only one deity, the sun disk Aten, is a break from traditional Egyptian religion.     Juan Antonio Belmonte: DNA, Wine & Eclipses: the Dakhamunzu Affaire DNA, Wine & Eclipses: the Dakhamunzu Affaire Juan Antonio Belmonte Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias 38200 La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain [email protected] Abstract In a recent book, Dodson (2009) has presented an updated impression of the Amarna period, in heavy contrast to the ideas lately defended by Krauss (2008) and other authors such as Reeves (2002) or Gabolde (1998; 2005). Dodson uses the recent archaeological and epi- graphic sources to offer a state of the art version of this fascinating historical period where he defends Ankhesenamun as the Dakhamunzu of the Hittite texts (the Egyptian queen who wrote to king Suppiluliuma asking for a husband), and the filiation of Tutankhamun as son of Nefertiti and Akhenaten. Dodson keeps the old chronology situating the ascent to the throne of this latter king c. 1553 BC. However, in the last few years there has been a crucial revolution of various aspects in the understanding of the Amarna period. This revolution includes: new evidence from Hittite sources which make Tutankhamun a contemporary of Mursili II (Miller 2007), a new length for the reign of Horemheb (van Dijk 2008), and the important data yielded by DNA analysis of the Amarna period family (Hawass et al. 2010). All this new information has been gathered together with the astronomical evidence of this period: the hypothetical solar orientation of Akhetaten main temple at the moment of the foundation of the city and a possible eclipse of the Hittite sources. These new data have al- lowed the implementation of a new theory which offers a completely different picture of the period and a new chronology for the late 18 th Dynasty (see also Belmonte 2012).

To outline and state the significance of this world power, we must account for its assets and achievements. Aksum produced and exported wheat, barley, myrrh, ivory and gold which was brought by the Nile through to the district called Cyeneum (ስሜን) and then on to Askum city. These goods were subsequently distributed to the rest of the world either via five day caravan trips to Adulis or up through Meroe to Egypt according to Perplus of the Erythraean Sea. Aksum had abundant gold, silver, bronze and copper mining fields that made it possible to mint coins as superior as that of Roman and Persian mintage. That said however, Aksum fared worse compared to its contemporary empires and its past glory.

ABSTRACT Recently published, high-resolution scans of the walls of room J (the Burial Chamber) of Valley of the Kings tomb KV 62 (Tutankhamun) reveal, beneath the plastered surfaces of the painted scenes, distinct linear traces. These are here mapped, discussed, and tentatively identified as the “ghosts” of two hitherto unrecognized doorways. It is argued that these doorways give access to: (1) a still unexplored storage chamber on the west of room J, seemingly contemporary with the stocking of Tutankhamun’s burial; and (2) a pre-Tutankhamun continuation of KV 62 towards the north, containing the undisturbed burial of the tomb’s original owner – Nefertiti. “Now, about the tomb of Nefertiti,” [Omm Sety] continued, sounding a bit hesitant. “I did once ask His Majesty where it was, and he told me. He said, ‘Why do you want to know?’ I said I would like to have it excavated, and he said, ‘No, you must not. We don’t want anything more of this family known.’ But he did tell me where it was, and I can tell you this much. It’s in the Valley of the Kings, and it’s quite near to the Tutankhamun tomb.
