IS THERE THE MAGIC OF A KOENIG & BAUER TODAY? Perhaps a rather strange way to herald the New Year with a flashback from the past. But this picture, which shows a1:2 scaled replica found in the KBA Museum in Würzburg, Germany, shows how much technology has progressed the past two centuries. Incidentally, the era of mechanical printing began in the night of 28 to 29 November 1814 with the production of The Times newspaper on the double-cylinder press (seen above) from Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer. The picture also shows that when you have creativity and courage, as Koenig and Bauer exhibited, you can achieve the unimaginable. Today’s youngsters must take their cue from the efforts of such pioneers. For more on the story, please go to page 37. FROM THE EDITOR

Successful use of news ink not only depends on pressroom conditions but also on several other factors. Reform ‘contempt of court’ law, urge journalists We, the undersigned journalists, writers, historians and acti vists from South Asia, are deeply concerned about the use of ‘contempt of court’ law to curb freedom of expression. The convicti on and sentencing on December 2, 2014, of Dhaka-based journalist David Bergman by the Internati onal Crimes Tribunal 2 on charges of “contempt of court” for citi ng published research on killings during the Bangladesh Liberati on War of 1971, is a serious set-back to Bangladesh’s commitment to free speech and independent scholarship. At the outset, we reiterate our belief that those responsible for genocide and internati onal crimes during the Liberati on War must be prosecuted and punished through an open and transparent process. We fi rmly believe that the right to expression must include the right to examine, analyse and comment on diff ering historic narrati ves. We are aware that in his blogs, posted most recently two years ago, Bergman cited fi gures from published research on deaths and other casualti es during the 1971 Liberati on War. A diff erence in the fi gures of total fataliti es does not in any way diminish the truth that heinous and widespread war crimes were committ ed in 1971 – and Bergman’s arti cles stress this very point and call for evidence-based data. In his words, “There is enough substanti ated evidence to suggest that whatever the exact number of deaths, a very large number of civilians were killed. Yet, at the same ti me, arguably it is important for the sake of accuracy that people do not claim that a parti cular number of people died - whether it is too high or too low - which has no basis at all in the evidence.” We are also parti cularly concerned about the personal att acks by the Tribunal on David Bergman. Having contributed to the Royal Television Society award winning Channel Four documentary, the 'War Crimes File', on which the Tribunal itself relied in another case to convict a war criminal, Bergman has consistently writt en in support of the need for war crimes trials for the atrociti es and crimes against humanity in 1971. We fi nd the court’s decision may have a chilling eff ect on freedom of expression with ramifi cati ons for journalists, writers and scholars throughout the region. How does an editorial company work? This is what nearly 100 students at the Insti tute of Journalism at the Technical University of Dortmund are investi gati ng. Their main focus is directed at the link between theory and practi ce and what the disti ncti ve characteristi cs of quality journalism are. The soluti on, which was jointly developed by ppi Media and Digital Collecti ons, processes media-neutral content, so that journalists can use it for diff erent media channels. The double-cylinder press for The Times in 1814 was an important landmark in the 500-year plus history of printing. Its hourly output of 1100 printed sheets compared to 240 by Gutenberg’s hand press increased productivity by almost five times.
