Spillers Records New Release List 5.2.21 February already?! Hopefully the January blues are behind us all and the lighter evenings are bringing everyone a much needed lift. If in doubt, we’d prescribe a healthy dose of new music exploration to keep you going. Starting with the FFs, both FLEET FOXES and FOO FIGHTERS have been our joint-first- most-pre-ordered titles of the year so far, and it’s great to see the return of both, FFantastic! We have some special beer / tea mats to go with the Foo’s new release, while stocks last. Keep hydrated at all times. Please be aware, after a last minute surge in pre-orders, we are down to our last few copies of the (now deleted) indies exclusive FLEET FOXES LP but hope to have some of the standard pressing in next week. New comers BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD have been gaining traction in the last couple of years and we know they impressed a lot of our regulars who caught them at the Swn festival in 2019. The limited Indies “inverted artwork” LP edition is not to be missed! SARATHY KORWAR’s More Arriving LP was never far from the shop stereo when it came out in 2019 so we’ll be lapping up the chance of new music from him and his UPAJ COLLECTIVE (Upaj meaning “to improvise” in Hindi) which truly does capture the spirit of spontaneity thais promised. Vinyl only for this one, sorry. We’ve not had the chance to get to know THE ROUGH GUIDE TO AVANT-GARDE JAPAN, but there’s never been a time that this series have been anything other than exceptional, so well worth a punt if you’re feeling wild this week! COMMON brings much needed positivity and uplift to our lives in A Beautiful Revolution (Part 1), and talking of which, it’s a welcome sight to see more TOOTS / MAYTALS catalogue available on vinyl. Not before time. As is a running theme with the supply chain “as it is” .. a few late comers this week. You’ll notice a rare opportunity to pick up a DINKED EDITION (these usually sell out on announcement) from THE TELESCOPES so if sludgy psych-shoegaze is your bag, check these out! It’s worth noting, TRANSATLANTIC The Absolute Universe: There are TWO completely different versions of this album. “We wrote fresh lyrics and have different people singing on the 1CD version tracks as compared to those on the 2CD.     Transatlantic – The Absolute Universe – The Breath Of Life (Abridged Version) (64:23, CD, Vinyl, Digital, InsideOut Music/Sony Music, 2021) Ein Album – drei Versionen. Selbst wenn man von Transatlantic epische Werke gewohnt ist und die Band Herausforderungen liebt, so setzt das Quartett Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas und Mike Portnoy beim aktuellen Epos noch einen drauf. Ursprünglich war eigentlich nur ein „normales“, rund einstündiges Album geplant, doch nach den Aufnahmesessions, die dieses mal in Schweden stattfanden, entwickelten sich bei den Nacharbeiten so viel neue Einfälle, dass man auf einmal genügend Material für ein mehr als 90-minütiges Doppelalbum hatte. 90 Minuten sind dann doch zu viel. Sollte man nicht einfach alles wieder kompakter zusammenstutzen? Letztendlich kam man nach einigem Hin und Her überein: warum nicht einfach „The Absolute Universe“ in gleich zwei Versionen, nämlich als „The Breath Of Life (Abridged Version)“ und „Forevermore (Extended Version)“ veröffentlichen? Das Label InsideOut machte mit und für den absoluten Overkill gibt’s auch noch „The Ultimate Edition“, die beide Versionen vereint. Dabei handelt es sich bei der „Abridged Version“ nicht einfach nur um eine gekürzte Ausgabe der „Extended Version“, sondern jede Version enthält andere Teile, Texte, sogar unterschiedliche Sänger und ebenfalls die Songreihenfolge wurde teils verändert. Damit bleibt also dem Fan die Qual der Wahl. Nach so viel Vorrede zum Inhalt: einmal mehr erkennt man die kompositorischen Handschriften von den beiden Songschreibern Neal Morse und Roine Stolt. Stilistisch wird auf den gewohnten Retro Prog-Einschlag gesetzt, den man in dieser Art von den Vorgängeralben kennt. So lässt die ‚Overture‘ als Zusammenfassung des noch Kommenden, ausschweifenden, dynamischen Prog-Bombast erwarten.

I can't thank The Soultastics enough for playing at our wedding. They were absolutely incredible and really made the party. Thanks to them, all of our guests were up and dancing throughout their set and the atmosphere was fantastic. We had so much fun! They were also on-hand throughout the planning process and were really lovely to work with, helping us choose the set list and playing our requests. The first dance was an incredibly special moment, thanks in large part to them. I'll definitely be recommending The Soultastics in the future. I'm fairly sure half our guests have mentally booked them in for their future events too . Thanks, guys! AMY LAVELLE'S WEDDING. ABSOLUTELY MADE OUR DAY! We had an absolutely amazing day, and the music was such an integral part of it all. The jazz trio sounded fantastic and worked so well in the room we had for the reception drinks (it started while having our photos taken outside and sounded amazing). It was really nice having the piano in the background for the dinner too, all the music being played sounded great and was exactly what we were after, several people commented on how beautiful it was in the old hall.

So it should come as no surprise that for their fifth album, the foursome of Neal Morse (keyboards, guitar vocals), Roine Stolt (guitar, vocals), Pete Trewavas (bass, vocals) and Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals) have really gone out to do something a little unusual. 'A little unusual'? No, it's considerably more significant than that phrase implies. “We have actually come up with something unprecedented,” says Portnoy proudly. “We've got two versions of this album. There's a two CD presentation, which is 90 minutes long, and a single one - that's 60 minutes.” So far this sounds fairly routine. However, as Portnoy goes on to explain... “The single CD is NOT an edited version of the double CD. They're new recordings. What we have done are different approaches to the songs for this! We wrote fresh lyrics and also have different people singing on the single CD version tracks as compared to those on the double CD. Some of the song titles have also been changed, while others might remain the same, but compositionally what you'll hear has been altered.
