Pastor’s Corner Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 21, 2019 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Congratulations to Our Newly Dedicated Christ Cathedral - a place for Christ forever in the Diocese of Orange On behalf of our Bishop Kevin Vann, his assistant bishops, Bishop Timothy, Bishop Thanh, Bishop Emeritus Tod Brown and all Christ Cathedral and Chancery Staff, we thank you for your generosity, support, prayers, love and hard work for these the past 8 years which brought us to this momentous occasion in our Diocese’s history - the Dedication of Christ Cathedral . We had the most beautiful Mass of Dedication last Wednesday 7/17 with the presence of the representative of the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America, two Car- dinals, more than 60 Bishops, 300 Priests, 100 Deacons and 3,000 Faithful. Thanks be to God, to Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Junípero Serra for leading us to this wonderful day! Congrats one and all! The Cathedral is only open for Saturday Vigil Mass and Sunday Masses until the Hazel Wright Organ is fully installed and voiced. It is anticipated that the Cathedral will open daily in February 2020. Therefore, not until that time will regular scheduled tours be conducted. Welcome Deacon Eric - soon to be Father Eric! Deacon Erialdo Ramirez Alfaro has begun his very first assignment in his ministerial life with us at St. Cecilia since July 1st. He has been chosen to replace Fr. Ismael as our 2nd parochial vicar. Soon-to-be Father Erialdo Ramirez Alfaro is 29 years old. He was born on August 16, 1989 in Gua- dalajara Jalisco, Mexico. His parents are Erialdo Ramirez and Mireya Al- faro. He has 3 siblings, Mireya (twin sister), Alejandro and Barbara. Dcn. Erialdo comes from a long line of dentists. When he was young, he en- countered the Lord through the daily reading of the Scriptures and prayer. From this, he heard God's call to the priesthood. He entered the Diocesan Seminary of Guadalajara in 2007 where he studied 5 years of philosophy and obtained a bachelors degree and a license in sacred philosophy. Later, he entered Saint Joseph’s Seminary in the Archdiocese of New York, where he completed one year of English and three years of theology. In 2016, he joined the Diocese of Orange, where he has many relatives on his fa- ther's side, and finished his priestly formation in 2018. He was assigned a Pastoral Year as a Deacon at Saint Mary’s Church in Fullerton. He will be ordained as a priest THIS COMING Saturday, July 27th at Christ’s Cathedral at 10:00 am. ALL ARE INVITED. No tickets required. Dcn. Erialdo greatly enjoys working with the ongoing formation of Catholics. In September, he will teach Faith Study Classes in English every Wednesday at 9:30 am in the School Library, and in Spanish every Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the Kuper Center. Please don’t hesitate to introduce yourselves to Dcn. Erialdo and in case you find it difficult to pronounce his name, you may call him Deacon Eric. After his priestly ordination we will have the joyful privilege of calling him Father Eric. He is excited to work with our entire parish with an open heart and an attitude of service and listening for all those who approach him and are faithful of St. Cecilia. We are looking forward to knowing him and serving together with Dcn. Eric, soon-to-be Fr. Eric! With gratitude in and peace of Christ, Fr. Bao Thanks to our Advertisers! Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father knowing ... fear not, you are more valuable than many sparrows. – Matthew 29:31 Page two 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time PPastor’sastor’s CCornerorner Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today I want to offer a prayer for all the Dads on this Father’s Day: God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless these men, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Today is the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The response to today’s Psalm is, “Lord, in your great love, answer me.” I find this very appropriate. I have been doing a lot of praying during the “lock down time” of the last three months. We were ready to celebrate the opening of our church in March, only to be told to stay home. We have all been through so much. I was so happy when the Bishop offered to bless our newly retrofitted and renovated church on June 14. Originally this was going to be just a livestream Mass. Then with the help of the Bishops of California, including Bishop Vann, as well as Bishop Jaime Soto, a native son of Orange County and Bishop of Sacramento, we were allowed by the Governor to open our churches on June 14.

Little girl, I say to you, arise! Mark 5:41 Page two 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor's corner Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Gospel Reading contains the cure of two seriously ill individuals. The daughter of Jairus, the synagogue official, was at the point of death and a woman had been afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. Can you imagine how frantic and anxious this father felt? His beloved daughter was dying and everyone around him was telling him to get ready for her death. Was this the same synagogue official who had scolded Jesus for curing on the sabbath? (See Luke 13:10-17) If so, did he remember that Jesus had cured the woman who had been unable to stand erect for eighteen years? The synagogue official searched for Jesus, and when he found him, begged him to come cure his dying daughter. While on his way, a woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years pushed through the crowd around Jesus and touched his cloak. Her flow of blood dried up and she felt cured. Has that ever happened to you? You were sick for a long time but finally started feeling better? Did you feel relief, joy, and many other emotions? This woman, who was now cured, heard Jesus say, “Who touched my clothes?” She became fearful.

  • STATEMENT on the APPOINTMENT of BISHOP JAIME SOTO AS COADJUTOR BISHOP of SACRAMENTO by Bishop William K
STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF BISHOP JAIME SOTO AS COADJUTOR BISHOP OF SACRAMENTO by Bishop William K. Weigand Bishop of Sacramento October 11, 2007 I am grateful and delighted to announce that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Auxiliary Bishop Jaime Soto, of the Diocese of Orange, as Coadjutor Bishop of Sacramento. As Bishop Soto prepares to help me to serve the People of God in the Diocese of Sacramento, I extend to him my heartfelt welcome to the Diocese and assure him of the prayers of all our people. I have known Bishop Soto for a number of years and have observed his good work. It pleases me to know that Bishop Soto will be helping me to shepherd this vast 20-county diocese. As Coadjutor, Bishop Soto, in due course, will succeed me as Diocesan Bishop. Bishop Soto, 51 years of age, is a native of Southern California and comes to us with very fine qualifications. He was ordained a priest in 1982 for the Diocese of Orange. He completed advanced studies at Columbia University in New York, where he obtained his Masters in Social Work (MSW) in 1986. In 1986, he was appointed Director of Catholic Charities of Orange and Vicar for Hispanics in 1989. In 1990, Bishop Soto was granted the title Monsignor by Pope John Paul II , who also appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Orange in 2000, to assist Bishop Tod Brown. Bishop Soto is well known for his care and concern for people. I look forward to his serving beside me and with the many other dedicated priests, religious, and lay faithful here in Northern California.
