The SBF Survey of Galaxy Distances. I. Sample Selection, Photometric

Box 26732 Tucson, AZ 85726; Alan Dressler Carnegie Observatories, 813 Santa Barbara St., Pasadena, CA 91101 ABSTRACT We describe a program of surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) measurements for determining galaxy distances. This paper presents the photometric calibration of our sample and of SBF in general. Basing our zero point on observations of Cepheid variable stars we find that the absolute SBF magnitude in the Kron-Cousins I band correlates well with the mean (V −I)0 color of a galaxy according to M I =(−1.74 ± 0.07) + (4.5 ± 0.25) [(V −I)0 − 1.15] for 1.0 < (V −I) < 1.3. This agrees well with theoretical estimates from stellar popula- tion models. Comparisons between SBF distances and a variety of other estimators, including Cepheid variable stars, the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF), Tully-Fisher (TF), Dn−σ, SNII, and SNIa, demonstrate that the calibration of SBF is universally valid and that SBF error estimates are accurate. The zero point given by Cepheids, PNLF, TF (both calibrated using Cepheids), and SNII is in units of Mpc; the zero point given by TF (referenced to a distant frame), Dn−σ, and SNIa is in terms of a Hubble expan- sion velocity expressed in km/s. Tying together these two zero points yields a Hubble constant of H0 =81±6 km/s/Mpc. -

Before exploding as supernovae, they live out their lives of only a few million years with prodigious outputs of radiation and stellar winds which dramatically affect both their evolution and environments. A detailed introduction to the topic, this book connects the astrophysics of mas- sive stars with the extremes of galaxy evolution represented by starburst phenomena. We present a K-band speckle image and HK-band polarimetric images of the proto- planetary nebula Frosty Leo obtained using the 6 m SAO telescope and the 8 m Subaru telescope, respectively. Our speckle image revealed clumpy structures in the hourglass-like bipolar nebula. The polarimetric data, for the first time, detected an elongated region with small polarizations and polarization vector alignment on the east side of the central star. We have performed radiative transfer calculations to model the dust shell of Frosty Leo. We found that micron-size grains in the equatorial dense region and small grains in the bipolar lobes are required to explain the total intensity images, the polarization images, and the spectral energy distribution. We present new observational data for IRAS 09371+1212, the Frosty Leo Nebula, in the form of infrared spectra from 2.2–2.5µm which reveal photospheric bands of CO. The 12CO/13CO band ratio deter- mined is similar to those exhibited by evolved K giant stars, and supports the proposal that the object is highly evolved. The equivalent width of the CO bands implies, however, that the spectral type lies in the range G5III to K0III, somewhat earlier than K7III, as derived from colours and optical spectra. The smaller equivalent widths of the CO bands may re- flect a low metal abundance which could fit well with the considerable height of the source above the galactic plane (>0.9kpc). 1. Introduction The Frosty Leo Nebula, IRAS 09371+1212, remains unique with its extremely deep 3.1µm absorption feature, almost two decades in depth, its twin far-infrared emission features at 44 and 62µm, and its abnormal location, >0.9kpc from the plane of the Galaxy. Forveille et al. (1987; hereafter FMOL) concluded, primarily on the basis of its 2.6mm CO emission spectrum, that it is a post-AGB star with a bipolar circumstellar envelope, and suggested water ice mantles around the grains as the source of the excess emission in the 60µm IRAS band. -

The ionized, dust, and molecular components of the object are modeled using geometric parameters obtained from visible, radio, infrared, and CO data. The physical processes considered include recombination lines of H and He, collisional excited lines of metals, bf and † contin- uum radiations, two-photon radiation, dust continuum radiation, and molecular rotational and vibra- tional transitions. The dust component is assumed to be heated by a combination of direct starlight and the line and continuum radiation from the ionized nebula. The molecular component of the nebula is coupled to the dust component through the stimulated absorption of the dust continuum radiation. Spe- ciÐcally, we compare the predicted Ñuxes of the CO rotational lines and the 179.5 km water rotational line to those observed by the Infrared Space Observatory satellite. -

Received 2011 May 10; in original form 2010 September 23 ABSTRACT In this paper we report the identification of two new Galactic O2 If*/WN6 stars (WR20aa and WR20c), on the outskirts of the massive young stellar cluster Westerlund 2. The morphological similarity between the near-infrared spectra of the new stars with that of WR20a and WR21a (two of the most massive binaries known to date) is remarkable, indicating that probably they are also very massive stars. New optical spectroscopic observations of WR20aa suggest an intermediate O2 If*/WN6 spectral type. Based on a mosaic made from the 3.6 µm Spitzer IRAC images of the region including part of the RCW49 complex, we studied the spatial location of the new emission line stars, finding that WR20aa and WR20c are well displaced from the centre of Westerlund 2, being placed at ≈36 pc (15.7 arcmin) and ≈58 pc (25.0 arcmin), respectively, for an assumed heliocentric distance of 8 kpc. Also, very remarkably, a radius vector connecting the two stars would intercept the Westerlund 2 cluster exactly at the place where its stellar density reaches a maximum. -

Ap95 differs from Ap91 to Ap94 primarily in Ap number. That is, it once again attempts to highlight some areas of our mutual science where a major event has occurred during the year (a possible solution of the Type II supernova problem, the faintness of quasar host galaxies, the collision of Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter), but also to focus on some topics where dogged determination is producing more gradual advances (dense star clusters, the second-parameter problem, inventories of nearby objects, and dark-matter candidates). In moderate departure from the rules of Ap92-94, there has been some deliberate up-dating of topics discussed previously. The topics are only partly ordered from nearby to far away. 1.
