What Are Memorial Gardens? Memorial gardens are areas planted for a specific purpose. That purpose is to remember someone or something special. Memorial gardens are usually planted in memory of people who have passed away. The garden is planted as a tribute to the life or lives that were lost. A memorial garden can be any size or can be planted with any type of plant. A single tree or flower can be a memorial garden. Memorial gardens can also be several acres or hectares in size. These gardens may include trees, flowers, shrubs, grasses, and other objects. Other objects include, for example, memorial stones or sculptures. Memorial gardens give surviving people a place to remember who or what was lost. These gardens give people a chance to share their grief and to heal.     WELCOME! Festivarians, music lovers, friends old and new... WELCOME to the 27th version of our annual get-together! This year, we can’t help but look back 50 years to the Summer of Love, the summer of 1967, a year that brought us the Monterey Pop Festival (with such performers as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead) which became an inspiration and template for future music festivals like the one you find yourself at right now. But the hippies of that era would likely refer to what’s going on in the political climate of these United States now as a “bad trip” with the old adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” coming back into play. Here we are in 2017 with so many of the rights and freedoms that were fought long and hard for over the past 50 years being challenged, reinterpreted or revoked seemingly at warp speed. It’s high time to embrace the two basic tenets of the counterculture movement. First is PEACE. PEACE for your fellow human, PEACE within and PEACE for our planet. The second tenet brings a song to mind - and while the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band gets all the attention on its 50th anniversary, it’s the final track on their Magical Mystery Tour album (which came out later the same year) that contains the most apropos song for these times. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. LOVE more, fear less. LOVE is always our answer. Come back to LOVE.

Ten days before the opening of Richard Prince’s first major exhibition in Paris, a New York judge ruled that he violated the law by creating a series of collages and paintings based on photographs by Patrick Cariou. Prince, 61, is a star among the so-called appropriation artists who pirate images, manipulate them and present them as their own work. His best-known series feature cowboys, taken from the Marlboro Man advertising campaign, and blonde nurses copied from pulp-fiction covers. Ethical issues clearly do not perturb his clients. After a 2007 retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, prices for his works soared. Prince is now one of the biggest earners on the contemporary art market. Amazingly, it’s the National Library, not a museum, that presents his work to Parisians. Prince is a compulsive collector of books, from rare first editions to dime novels and porn paperbacks whose covers are waiting to be blown up, painted over and sold for a fortune.

    AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Julie Irene Mackaman for the degree of Master of Arts (Interdisciplinary Studies) in Speech, English, Education presented on July 28, 1976 Title: The Beat Generation: A Rhetoric of Negation Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: Thurston E. Doler The Beat Generation was an American counter-culture movement in the 1950's. Comprised of nomadic writers, poets, actors, musicians, and artists, the Beat movement represented no systematic philosophy and its most dis- tinguishing characteristic was its apolitical disengage- ment from society. The Beats offered no substantive alternatives to the existing social order, but they sus- tained themselves as a collective literary body for nearly fifteen years by a shared opposition to society. Quint- essentially an anti-movement, the Beat Generation held a fragile power. By dropping out of society and saying "No" to the social hierarchy, the Beats raised important questions about the relation of the individual to society. At the leading edge of the Beat Generation were the writers who voiced and penned the movement's refusal to participate in what was perceived as a hypocritical social facade. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs formed the nucleus of a "charmed circle" of literary friends who formulated a rhetoric which negated America's preoccupation with materialism, conformity, and security in the "apathetic fifties." The Beat writers at- tempted to undermine the credibility of the social struc- ture by using America in the fifties as an "anti-model." Without recommending any kind of definitive behavior, they gave a license to virtually any behavior which op- posed society.

In 1988, filmmaker Kevin Tomlinson asked that question as he interviewed a group of hippies—living and raising families off-grid in rural Washington State-insulated from mainstream culture. Nearly 20 years later he tracked down his subjects again to find out what had become of their dreams of environmental utopia and sixties idealism. The film captures a time-lapse view of these back to the landers told with moving personal stories of dedicated tribal families with lots of freedom but little cash, unflinching grass-roots activism in small conservative communities and of hippie kids who today ask whether ‘free love’ was really free. “A flat out wonderful film...a vindication of flower power idealism.     Socialist Flower Power: Soviet Hippie Culture May 20 to August 26, 2018 Хиппи (Khippi) The hippie movement was the first truly global youth movement, yet when it began the hippies of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York couldn’t have known how far their style and creed would spread. Indeed, when the San Francisco Diggers staged a funeral for the hippie movement in 1969, hippies across the world were only just getting into the swing of things. In Moscow, the summer of 1969 was seminal for the band of khippi that had started to assemble at a few central public places and in the apartments and country houses of their mostly privileged parents. It was then that Moscow hippies discovered that there were many of them and that they shared more than a desire for long hair and a taste for rock-and-roll and jeans. These young people embraced love and peace and rejected the socialist ideology of their parents, just as their Western peers felt alienated by their parents’ bourgeois outlook and their country’s capitalism. Hippies had started to appear, independent of each other, in all the major Soviet towns. Youngsters painted flowers on their cheeks in Riga, invented hippie symbols in Sevastopol, assembled on the main square of Magadan, in a cemetery in Lviv, opposite the Communist Party headquarters in Kaunas, and by the Finland Station in Leningrad. They idolized the flower children of Haight-Ashbury, yet their main source of information about them came from the Soviet press. Soviet media initially paid a great deal of attention to the new anti-capitalist, collectivist-minded phenomenon, covering it with sympathetic, almost wistful articles such as one in the newspaper Around the World called “Travels to the Hippieland,” which was read by thousands of budding A1 hippies back home.
