SACP 2004 Workers Assembly for the 27 July 2004, on the occasion of the 83rd anniversary of the SACP. As we celebrate the 83rd anniversary of the founding of South Africa’s Communist Party, on 30 July 1921, it is a good moment to recall that the three main strands of our national liberation movement, which nowadays form the ANC-SACP-COSATU Alliance, have been closely entwined since their very beginning. This common history of working-class organisation and national liberation struggle can be traced back at least as far as the first decade of the last century. In 1909 a “Native Convention” was called in Bloemfontein. It was a forerunner of the African National Congress, permanently founded three years later, on January 8, 1912. In the same year, 1909, the South African Labour Party was formed within the white working class. This organisation is no longer in existence; within a few years it had split, with the formation of the anti-imperialist International Socialist League (ISL) in 1915. The ISL launched the first industrial African trade union in South Africa, co-operated with the ANC, and in 1917 issued a pamphlet headed “No Labour Movement without the Black Proletariat.” The seeds that later grew and intertwined so strongly had already been planted: those of the liberation movement, the organised labour movement, and the Communist Party. The ISL was the main component of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA) when it became a member of the Communist International in 1921. By 1924 the vast majority of its membership was black, and by 1928 the Communists had become the first party in South Africa to call openly for a “Black Republic” — in other words, majority rule. -

Xenophobia as a Challenge to Positive Peace in Russia: Inter-group Relations Within The Academia Master’s Thesis in Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research Developmental Psychology Nikita Kordashenko, 1902049 Supervisor: Karin Österman Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies Åbo Akademi University, Finland Spring 2021 Nikita Kordashenko Abstract Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate positive attitudes towards integrating immigrant minorities, intense group identification, and psychological concomitants among Russian university students. Method: A questionnaire was completed by 129 females, 48 males, and three respondents who reported “other” as sex. The mean age was 19.8 (SD 2.6) for females and 21.8 (SD 2.9) for males. The age difference was significant. Results: Of females, 55.8 % and of males 66.7% reported that they knew some foreign student in person. Female students had a significantly more positive attitude towards integration immigrant minorities compared to male students. Male students scored slightly higher than female students on intense group identification. Respondents with low scores on positive attitudes towards integrating immigrants scored significantly higher on intense group identification. No significant differences were found for level of positive attitudes and anxiety and depression. Conclusions: More than half of the students knew some foreign student in person. Positive attitudes towards integrating immigrant minorities were overall high. There was a negative association between positive attitudes towards -

Through a Black Traveler's Eyes: Claude McKay's A Long Way from Home Tuire Valkeakari Yale University Abstract: This essay analyzes Jamaican-born Claude McKay's discussion of racism(s) and nationalism(~) in his travelogue/autobiography A Long Way from Home ( 1937), in which he chronicles his sojourn in Europe and North Africa and addresses his complex relationship to the United States. Much of McKay's social analysis draws, as this essay establishes, on his observation that racism and nationalism tend to be intertwined and feed 011 each othe1: While describing his travels, McKay presents himselfas a bordercrosser who is "a bad nationalist" and an "internationalist" - a cosmopolitan whose home cannot be defined by any fixed national labels or by nationalist or racialist identity politics. This essay's dialogue with McKay's memoir ultimately reconstructs his difficult and of1-frustrated quest for democracy - the political condition that Ralph Ellison once eloquently equated with "man~· being at home in. the world." ALBERT NZULA - PEBSIDKHT MDEL CASTRO - In the course of the struggle the masses produce their own heroes, outstanding revolutionaries and leaders - these are not manufactured in classrooms and big universities as our bourgeois theoreticians would like us to believe. The people know their heroes, they always remember them and when one day- flags of freedom are raised, monuments of great historical significance shall be built. Of course this should not be interpreted to mean that people fight to be remembered and for monuments but these are symbols of feats and contributions made by heroes both known and unknown. This year when the South African Communist Party (SACP) marks its 60th Anniversary all South African revolutionaries, communists, non-communists, Christians and the youth remember all our heroes and draw inspiration from them. Our list of heroes will be incomplete especially this year if we forget the first African General-Secretary of our Party - Comrade Albert Thomas Nzula. SUFFERINGS AHD HDHILIATIOHS He was born on the 16th November, 1905 at Rouxville in the Orange Free State, a place today regarded as one of the strong holds of the Afrikaner autocracy, Nzula came from a working class family and from this we can deduce that he experienced all the sufferings and humiliations that every black man expe riences under the alien white rule in South Africa. -

Famous writers, of course. Both Robert Burns and Paul Lawrence Dunbar are remembered for their use of the folklore and the language of their people. Jonathan Edwards and James Weldon Johnson “rained down hellfire” in their biblical interpretations of literature. Guy de Maupassant and Langston Hughes are masters of the short novel that captured the ambitions and hopes of their races. Charlotte Bronte and Maya Angelou managed to put excitement into otherwise commonplace autobiographies. Each of these writers stands among the giants of his times. Black America, though shackled and oppressed, has risen to the ranks of the great by producing her share of genius among the masterpieces of literature. There are many notable black writers, living and dead. Paul Lawrence Dunbar, James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou are black writers who have produced some of the best black writing over the years, ranging from the serious to the light. Their thoughts, emotions, and accomplishments transcend the color line. Their works, like those of other black writers, combine entertainment, historical interest, and literary value. They share a common subject and set of feelings: the black experience. Margaret Butcher says in an article from The Negro in American Culture that every Negro writer has “something to say.” He cannot escape having important things to say.
