Under the supervision of AGUS HIKMAT and DIDIK WIDYATMOKO The research of Syzygium diversity, its population structure and the distribution patterns were conducted in Gunung Baung Nature Park, East Java. A total of five block locations, each comprising five transect sections, were purposively selected to obtain data of the taxon diversity, population stucture and distribution patterns. The importance value index, the individual number of each stratum (stage class) (i.e. seedlings, saplings, poles and trees) and variance-to-mean ratio were calculated. The principal component analysis, cluster analysis, multiple linear regressions and canonical correspondence analysis were performed to determine the relationships between abiotic and biotic factors in regard with the presence of Syzygium. There were six species of Syzygium in Gunung Baung, Pasuruan, namely S. cumini, S. polyanthum, S. littorale, S. pycnanthum, S. racemosum, and S. samarangense. Gas Department of Chemistry, Punjab Agricultural University Chromatography-Mass Spectrometery (GC-MS) studies of essential oil revealed the presence of eugenol Ludhiana, Punjab, India as major compound. Phytochemical analysis of essential oil showed the presence of saponins, alkaloids, flavanoids, glycosides, tannins and steroids. The essential oil of S. aromaticum possess various biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, herbicidal, nematicidal, antitumor and anti-inflammatory. This review covers the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of cloves, it’s essential oil and various extracts. Introduction The role of plants in human life has been increasing day by day due to advancement in the nutritional and medicinal disciplines. Spices are dried root, seed, bark fruit or flowers of plants which served several functions including flavoring agents, food additives, coloring agents, preservatives and medicines. During prehistoric times the discoveries of spices have been a [65] period of joy as they are used as flavoring agents (Osuntogun et al. 2004) . Taxonomy and Conservation Status of Pteridophyte Flora of Sri Lanka R.H.G. Ranil and D.K.N.G. Pushpakumara University of Peradeniya Introduction The recorded history of exploration of pteridophytes in Sri Lanka dates back to 1672-1675 when Poul Hermann had collected a few fern specimens which were first described by Linneus (1747) in Flora Zeylanica. The majority of Sri Lankan pteridophytes have been collected in the 19th century during the British period and some of them have been published as catalogues and checklists. However, only Beddome (1863-1883) and Sledge (1950-1954) had conducted systematic studies and contributed significantly to today’s knowledge on taxonomy and diversity of Sri Lankan pteridophytes (Beddome, 1883; Sledge, 1982). Thereafter, Manton (1953) and Manton and Sledge (1954) reported chromosome numbers and some taxonomic issues of selected Sri Lankan Pteridophytes. Recently, Shaffer-Fehre (2006) has edited the volume 15 of the revised handbook to the flora of Ceylon on pteridophyta (Fern and FernAllies). The local involvement of pteridological studies began with Abeywickrama (1956; 1964; 1978), Abeywickrama and Dassanayake (1956); and Abeywickrama and De Fonseka, (1975) with the preparations of checklists of pteridophytes and description of some fern families. Dassanayake (1964), Jayasekara (1996), Jayasekara et al., (1996), Dhanasekera (undated), Fenando (2002), Herat and Rathnayake (2004) and Ranil et al., (2004; 2005; 2006) have also contributed to the present knowledge on Pteridophytes in Sri Lanka. However, only recently, Ranil and co workers initiated a detailed study on biology, ecology and variation of tree ferns (Cyatheaceae) in Kanneliya and Sinharaja MAB reserves combining field and laboratory studies and also taxonomic studies on island-wide Sri Lankan fern flora. -

Present in evergreen forests, semi-evergreen forests and in the plains of Kerala, Coimbatore, Karnataka and Maharashtra . Syn, Syzygium caryophyllaeum Sensu Gamble. Bark, leaf and fruit has been used in folk herbal medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea, diabetes, leucorrhoea, fever, skin diseases and general debility. This present study reveals that wide range of novel phytochemical constituents have been isolated from this plant with diverse chemical properties and deals with enormous data that has been generated due to recent wide spread research in phytochemical, pharmacological aspect of this plant also include on its ethanobotany. -

i MEDICINAL PLANTS RESEARCH IN ASIA, VOLUME 1 The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) is an independent international scientific organization that seeks to advance the conservation and use of plant genetic diversity for the well-being of present and future generations. It is one of 15 Future Harvest Centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), an association of public and private members who support efforts to mobilize cutting-edge science to reduce hunger and poverty, improve human nutrition and health, and protect the environment. IPGRI has its headquarters in Maccarese, near Rome, Italy, with offices in more than 20 other countries worldwide. The Institute operates through three programmes: (1) the Plant Genetic Resources Programme, (2) the CGIAR Genetic Resources Support Programme, and (3) the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP). The nomenclatures of Calyptranthes ramiflora Blanco, Caryophyllus cotinifolius Miller, Eugenia bukobensis Engler, E. codyensis Munro ex Wight, E. cotinifolia Jacq., E. elliptica Lam., E. hypoleuca Thwaites ex Kosterm., E. phillyreoides Trimen, E. reinwardtiana DC., E. roxburghii DC., E. salomonica C.T. White, Jossinia Comm. ex DC., Myrtus caryophyllata L., M. cotini folio Plumier, M. pimenta L., and Pimenta acris (Sw.) Kostel. (Myrtaceae), and more or less associated names are outlined. Some typifications are made. Keywords. Eugenia, Myrtaceae, Myrtus, nomenclature, Pimenta, Syzygium Introduction The generic delimitation of Eugenia L. against Syzygium J.Gaertn. (Myrtaceae) is notoriously complicated but gradually, from various disciplines, a clearer concept is evolving. For anatomy see, e.g., Ingle & Dadswell (1953) and Schmid (1972a, b, c), and palynology (Pike 1956). Wilson et al. (2005), based on an analysis with matK, found that they are in quite different clades: Eugenia was included in the Myrteae (usually in the subtribe Eugeniinae O. Berg) and Syzygium in the new Syzygieae. It must be noted, though, that of Eugenia only E. uniflora L. was included and for Syzygium but 3 species. Similar results based on ITS and psbA-trnH were reported by Lucas et al. (2005), where the genera again were in different clades. However, only four Eugenia and two Syzygium species were included. -

ABSTRACT Plant species in Tropical Montane Cloud Forests (TMCFs) of Dothalugala Man and Biosphere (MAB) Reserve were recorded in twenty six 10 x 15 m2 experimental plots, aiming to reveal the total species richness and the richness of endemic and threatened flowering plant species in the forest canopy and the understory and, to find out the impacts of cardamom cultivation on the plant diversity of the study area. One hundred and forty eight plant species (77 tree, 46 shrub, 24 climber and one herbaceous species) belonging to 106 plant genera and 55 plant families have been found from the area examined. A high percentage endemicity of plant species (50%) was revealed in this site due to the presence of 74 (38 tree, 29 shrub, 6 climber and one hebaceous) species endemic to Sri Lanka. Similarly, 68 out of all plant species (45.9%) and 47 out of all endemic plant species (63.5%) in these forests were either globally or nationally threatened. The endemic and ‘Critically Endangered’ Stemonoporus affinis (Dipterocarpaceae) was also found to be thrive in the area. -
Chapter 7: Endemic and Threatened Plants
CHAPTER 7: ENDEMIC AND THREATENED PLANTS 7.1 Endemic Plants The concept of endemism was first exerted about 200 years back to describe taxa which are restricted to particular geographical area or ecological unit. Endemism is a relative notion and usually ascribed in context to restricted area, biotope, biogeographical region and political boundaries and the definitions have been customized by different workers with respect to the specifications and focus of study. However, in modern times, endemics are defined as taxonomic units that are confined to a narrow phytogeographic range because of their isolation by geographical (spatial), ecological and temporal (genetic, adaptive, etc.) barriers (Singh, 2015). Biogeographers and ecologists have enduring interest in endemics by virtue of their restricted distribution. Many workers have demonstrated major aspects of endemics such as reasons for restricted distribution, factors controlling the pattern of distribution, degree of endemism and categorization of endemics. Adolph Engler (1882) was the first to introduce an idea of dichotomy in endemism which was then substantially followed by several other workers. According to Cain’s classic, pioneering work (1944) endemics were classified into two categories namely, endemics which are relatively youthful species and epibiotics which are relatively old relict species. Endemics may or may not attend complete spread over the entire area by drifting their natural barriers. Whereas, the epibiotics represent relics resulted from historical contraction of area. As stated by him, a high degree of endemism is usually correlated with age and isolation of an area and with the diversification of its habitats, as these factors influence both evolution and survival of the species.
