Finalmente, ao meu pai Ottavio Olivieri e a minha mãe Maria Lourenço Olivieri. 7 RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho é pesquisar o papel dos druidas na sociedade céltica na Gália pré-romana, principalmente através das fontes clássicas, em articulação com a pesquisa arqueológica e a literatura irlandesa pré-cristã. Os druidas faziam parte da elite celta na Gália (e na Britânia) pré-romana nos séculos II e I a.C. e detinham prerrogativas político-religiosas e judiciárias. Ao contrário da maioria das concepções, as prerrogativas políticas permitiam que exercessem ingerência sobre assuntos ligados ao comércio e à eleição do vergobreto entre os povos que se tornaram Estado. Os druidas atuavam nos oppida e podem ter participado da formação estatal de povos do centro-leste da Gália. Neste contexto, intermediavam as relações entre as civitates celtas e a República romana. O fornecimento de vinho italiano para os oppida celtas na Gália nos séculos II e I a. C., principalmente para ser consumido nos festins religiosos, passava pela ingerência do grupo político-religioso. Os druidas também eram responsáveis pela administração dos cultos nos santuários, incluindo os sacrifícios humanos e animais, e pela elaboração de um sistema de crenças religiosas. Estas crenças legitimavam os festins e buscavam estimular o engajamento da clientela (os ambactos) a serviço dos nobres, bem como realçar sentimentos de identidade entre muitos povos da Gália pré-romana. No período do Alto Império, os druidas não estavam apenas à frente da oposição a Roma. Neste período eles desapareceram como instituição, mas muitos tiveram participação ativa na romanização da Gália através do engajamento em carreiras instauradas pela ordem romana. A “fusão” do culto imperial com crenças celtas foi um dos principais fatores que legitimaram a dominação romana. Muitos druidas tornaram-se decuriões, professores ou sacerdotes nos templos romanos. Palavras-chave: História da Gália, druidas, Civilização celta. 8 ABSTRACT This thesis aims at examine the role of druids in Celtic society in pre-Roman Gaul, mainly through classic sources in combination with an archaeological research and Irish pre- Christian literature. Druids belonged to Celtic upper class in pre-Roman Gaul (and in Britain) between II and I B.C. and owned political, religious and legal prerogatives. Differently from what most points of view ascertain, political prerogatives did allow druids obtain control on subjects related to trade and to the election of the vergobret for peoples newly emancipated as an Estate. Besides their influence in oppida, druids may have played a part in the Estate formation of center west Gaulish peoples. In such a context, they intersected relations between Celtic civitates and the Roman Republic. Moreover, Italian vine provision for Celtic oppida between II and I centuries B.C. – mainly the one to be used on religious feasts – was submitted to this political religious group’s control. Druids were also responsible for the organization of cults in sanctuaries, including human and animal sacrifices, and for the elaboration of a religious beliefs system. Such beliefs legitimated feasts and sought to encourage the engagement of customers (the ambacts) to serve aristocracy, besides strengthening an identity feeling among many pre-Roman Gaulish peoples. During High Empire, druids did more than lead an opposition toward Rome. Although they had vanished as an institution, many of them had an active participation in Gaul Romanization through engagement on occupations designated by Roman supremacy. Imperial cult ‘fusion’ with Celtic beliefs was one of the main causes that contributed to legitimate Roman domination. Several druids became decurions, teachers or priests in Roman temples. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This paper examines the changing attitudes of Gallo-Romans from the time of Caesar's conquest in the 50s BCE to the start of Vespasian's reign in 70-71 CE and how Roman prejudice shaped those attitudes. I first examine the conflicted opinions of the Gauls in Caesar's time and how they eventually banded together against him but were defeated. Next, the activities of each Julio-Claudian emperor are examined to see how they impacted Gaul and what the Gallo-Roman response was. Throughout this period there is clear evidence of increased Romanisation amongst the Gauls and the prominence of the region is obvious in imperial policy. This changes with Nero's reign where Vindex's rebellion against the emperor highlights the prejudices still effecting Roman attitudes. This only becomes worse in the rebellion of Civilis the next year. After these revolts, the Gallo-Romans appear to retreat from imperial offices and stick to local affairs, likely as a direct response to Rome's rejection of them.

    Portal to Celtic Mythology PORTAL TO CELTIC MYTHOLOGY In other sections, we've examined the influence of Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology on the Harry Potter books, and then learned a little more about each of them with stories about their gods, goddesses, and heroes. One other major mythology influences the books—Celtic mythology. Celtic mythology was the belief system held by the people of Britain before it was ever even a far-flung outpost of the Roman Empire. The Celtic people were not a unified group of people, nor did they live in one general area like the Greeks. The Celtic world consisted of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, West England, some areas of France, Germany, and even down into Spain and Italy. When we think of the Celts today we usually think of the Irish, Welsh, Scottish, or English. Because they were not a unified group of people, they did not have a unified mythology. There is no one creation myth as we see with the Greeks or the Norse, nor is there one pantheon of gods and goddesses. The Celtic gods and goddesses had many different names and aspects, depending on where they came from. Some carried over from land to land and from people to people. The god Lug, for example, was a god popular from Ireland all the way down into southern France and Spain. Others were only popular in one particular area. For example, there are many gods and goddesses and heroes specific to Ireland or Wales. Another way in which Celtic mythology differs is that it ultimately became influenced by the Roman Empire.

The Chronicles of the Foundation 1996 Introduction Originally published under the title of The Druid Chronicles (Re- formed), abbreviated DC(R) and nicknamed The Chronicles, these books contain the basic history and beliefs of the first year of the original branch of the Reform founded at Carleton College from which all the past, present and future Branches of the Reformed Druidism spring. Thus the Chronicles are the about the only section of A Reformed Druid Anthology that is accepted by every group. The primary author, David Frangquist, has made no claim of divine inspiration; nor has any other branch of the Reform. These five books have no canonical status, but they’re chock full of interesting and fun stuff. Don’t take it too seriously and try to see the message that underlies all the outer-trappings, holidays and names. For a more detailed discussion on the Chronicles see the End- Notes, Printing History and Historiography at the end of end of this Part One. Internal cross-referencing is indicated by raised numbers. Orgetorix, whom Caesar describes as ' pre-eminent among the Helvetii in rank and wealth,' 'organized a conspiracy among the [Helvetian] nobles in the hope of making himself king, and persuaded the Helvetii to undertake a national emigration.' He told them that they ' could easily achieve dominion over the whole of Gaul'; and as they were dissatisfied with their own territory they readily listened to him.

    PART SEVEN THE DRUID MISCELLANY Introduction Most of the material in this section is of very little importance to most pre 1986 Carleton Druids (because of its heavy Celtic Pagan orientation), but I feel that it has great importance for understanding the later NRDNA, and it may be of use to modern Carleton Druids. The books have been pretty much reprinted in order and verba- tim from DC(E). This is better preserves the historical nature of these documents, to show the approach and “angle” that the DC(E) of 1976 was presenting, especially to the compilers of religious ency- clopedists. Many issues of The Druid Chronicler magazine would essentially add to this section from 1976 to 1980.
