Liberty's Belle Lived in Harlingen Norman Rozeff Almost to a person those of the "baby boomer" generation will fondly remember the pop- ular TV series, "Little House on the Prairie." Few, however, will have known of Rose Wilder Lane, her connection to this series, to Harlingen, and more importantly her ac- complishments. Rose Wilder Lane was born December 5, 1886 in De Smet, Dakota Territory. She was the first child of Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Aha, this stirs a memory; isn't the latter the author of the "Little House on the Prairie" book series for children? Yes, indeed. Rose also lived the hardship life, similar to her mother's as portrayed on television. Be- fore the age of two she was sent away to her mother's parents for several months after her parents contracted diphtheria, then a deadly disease. In August 1889 she became a sister but only for the short period that her baby brother survived without ever being given a name. Rose was to have no other siblings. When a fire destroyed their home soon after the baby's death and repeated crop failures compounded the Wilder family miseries, the Wilders moved from the Dakotas to his parent's home in Spring Valley, Minnesota. In their search for a settled life and livelihood, the Wilders in 1891 went south to Westville, Florida to live with Laura's cousin Peter. Still unhappy in these surroundings, the family returned to De Smet in 1892 and lived in a rented house. Here Grandma Ingalls took care of Rose while Laura and Almanzo worked. -

The characters names are Charles and Caroline, and with their characterizations, seemed that it could have been about the author's grandparents, Pa and Ma in "Little House," except that the plot of the story didn't seem to match up with the early books of that series. I trust that, like our own parents, we may live to see times more prosperous than they have ever been in the past, and we will then reflect with satisfaction that these hard times were not in vain. Rundell Presented to the American Culture Faculty at the University of Michigan - Flint in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Liberal Studies in American Culture June 24,1993 First Reader Second Reader INTRODUCTION What motivates people to leave their homeland, family, and friends and journey to a different part of the country or to a foreign land? What prompts people to settle in a veritable wilderness where the climate and geography are so alien to their previous lives? What inspires people to tackle the hardships of building an entirely new life amid an environment that offers so few resources? Such questions have been asked since the first settlers arrived in the New World. The motivation, Westward mig'ation, and overcoming obstacles have been recurrent themes in American history and literature for hunckeds of years. Settlers on America’s frontiers have interested many people because they represent qualities that have become identified with the American culture. The pioneer qualities of hard work, independence, self-sufficiency and adventure have defined some of the basic elements of the American character. Accounts of many such pioneers are available: history books record the pioneer experience; personal accounts provide first hand information on the westward movement and frontier life; and fiction abounds with conflicts faced by American pioneer families. Historical accounts offer a factual, informative point of view, and have a secure place in our educational institutions. Schools emphasize history textbooks as a means by which most people begin to learn of the past. -

Roberts Department of Economics, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322-2240, United States Received 11 August 2004 Available online 23 September 2005 Abstract In May 1830, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed the Indian Removal Act that authorized the president of the United States to exchange land west of the Mississippi River for Indian land in the east and appropriated $500,000 to assist tribes in the move west. Three days later the House also passed the Preemption Act of 1830, giving squatters a right of first refusal to purchase land they had occupied prior to its being opened for sale. In a recent paper, Kanazawa (1996) finds that the willingness of squatters to illegally occupy federal lands greatly raised the cost of enforcing property rights and this was a significant factor behind the passage of the first general Preemption Act in 1830. We build on his work to test the hypoth- esis that Congressmen who favored squattersÕ rights would also favor moving Indian tribes out of the old southwest. By 1860, the nation had Wacquired more than 1.4 billion more acres, much of it in the public domain. How to dispose of the public land was a question that Congress addressed almost continuously.
