Croydon Bereavement Services works to the standards of the Charter for the Bereaved B E R E AV E M E N T S E RV I C E S GARDENS OF REMEMBRANCE - CROYDON CREMATORIUM. Croydon Council has offered a burial service since 1861 and opened this crematorium in 1937. Throughout that time Croydon Bereavement Service has remained committed to providing a caring and professional service for all members of the community who are bereaved. The gardens are designed to present an attractive and serene area where people can visit and remember their loved ones. Around these areas the shrub beds are reserved for placing cremated remains, and the location can be chosen by the bereaved. They can also attend and participate in the placing of the cremated remains with one of our staff members; this is called a ‘witness scatter’. We are also able to offer a short spoken service with the reading of a poem. Once the cremated remains have been placed the location is permanently recorded. When further family members pass away, their cremated remains can also be scattered at the same location. We have attractive features within the grounds, such as the tranquil Walled Garden with dedicated rose beds, and Water features. Please note: To maintain the dignified appearance of the grounds the placing of flower containers, potted plants, floral tributes in containers or other personal tributes is not permitted in the Gardens of Remembrance. The planting of bulbs, flowers and shrubs around the roses is not permitted. Any unauthorised memorabilia will be removed without prior notice and kept for collection for a short period of time; if not claimed within one month of removal the items will be disposed of. Mitcham Road Cemetery. Croydon COLUMBARIUM NICHE MEMORIAL The Columbarium Niche Memorial has been introduced to meet the needs of those people who would prefer to have cremated remains rest in a personal high quality niche rather than have them laid to rest loosely within the Garden of Remembrance or elsewhere. Each niche cell can accommodate two sets of remains with each casket being a maximum of 25cm high by 36cm wide by 42cm deep. The Columbarium Niches are located in a tranquil courtyard to the rear of the crematorium’s West chapel. The niches are faced in highly polished black Granite to enhance the visual appeal. The initial inscription on the cover plaque is included in the price with the letters skillfully enhanced in silver enamel. Further inscriptions can be added when necessary for an additional fee and if space permits. An area in front of the niches has been constructed for the placing of floral tributes. Please note that it is not permitted for items to be fixed to the plaques or any other part of the niche structure. Any unauthorised items identified will be removed without notice. On receipt of your order you will receive a layout drawing of your memorial inscription which is designed for you to check, make any corrections, if necessary, and provide approval for us to proceed. A total of 8 lines are available for the whole inscription. Space can be left for the addition of further inscriptions. When considering wording for the memorial it is not necessary to fill the whole tablet, it is quite acceptable to use only three or four lines and the remaining lines being used at a later date for further inscriptions if required. Once an order has been placed, the plaque will usually be inscribed and ready to place within 6 weeks. When this is completed a date and time can be arranged to place the remains into the niche. COLUMBARIUM NICHE MEMORIAL ORDER FORM COLUMBARIUM PLAQUE approx. size is 25.5cm high by 38cm wide Please write your memorial inscription using CAPITAL LETTERS CONDITIONS On payment of the prescribed sum, the Council will grant lease of a niche for a minimum period of 10 years commencing from the date of payment being received. On expiry of the initial lease, the leaseholder will be offered the option to renew the lease for a further period of years subject to the conditions then in being. During the period of the lease the holder may assign their interest in the lease and such transaction shall not have effect until registered with the office at the crematorium. The leaseholder shall have the sole right to authorise the placing of cremated remains within the niche and to the placing of inscriptions on the external plaque. The Council reserves the right to cut inscriptions on the niche plaques and to refuse any inscription considered unsuitable. No items shall be affixed to the plaques or adjoining framework of the niches. Flowers must be placed in the trough in front of the memorial. The Council reserves the right to remove and dispose of any unauthorised items without notice. On expiry of the lease and if not renewed (unless written instructions to the contrary have been given by the leaseholder to the Cemetery and Crematorium office within 28 days of expiry of the lease) the Council, on giving 28 days’ notice to the registered leaseholder by written notice to the last known address of their intention to do so, reserves the right to remove the contents of the niche, disperse the cremated remains in the Garden of Remembrance , and dispose of the plaque and cremated remains container(s). Completed . ……………… YORKSTONE PAVING MEMORIAL T he paths around the Gardens of Remembrance, including our walled garden, are paved with slabs. These slabs can be lifted and replaced with Yorkstone paving bearing an inscription of your choice. A badge, crest or floral emblem can also be inscribed onto the memorial; prices for these are available on request. Cremated remains may be loosely laid beneath the inscribed Yorkstone. Yorkstone Paving Slabs are supplied for an initial dedication period of 15 years. If you wish to purchase this type of memorial, please complete the order form overleaf. The fee paid includes an inscription of up to 60 characters for a 2’x2’ stone or 80 characters for a 3’x2’ stone. Inscriptions of more than 60 or 80 letters incur a further charge for each extra letter. Please refer to the enclosed price list for current fees. Note: Ownership of this memorial will be registered to the person who has ordered the Yorkstone Paving slab (as named on order form). No further inscription will be permitted without the written consent of the owner. The memorial is purchased initially for a minimum of fifteen years and up to a maximum of 45 years on a pro-rata basis. The payee will have the opportunity, at the end of the initial dedication period to renew the dedication; at the end of the original lease period we offer the facility to renew the memorial on a yearly basis. The fee paid covers the provision of the memorial, suitably inscribed. The London Borough of Croydon reserves the right to vary or refuse an inscription considered to be unsuitable, they also reserve the right to alter the position of the memorial, as they may deem desirable or necessary. On expiry of the dedication period, the London Borough of Croydon may remove and dispose of the memorial, as they deem suitable.

There are no new graves available at either Mitcham Road or Queens Road cemeteries; new graves are available at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Warlingham. This is a beautiful park setting with ground level bronze plaques on graves. To maintain this appearance it is important to be aware that no traditional memorials can be placed on the graves. Greenlawn’s is also 10 miles from North Croydon and has poor public transport links. The Council realise that this cemetery is inconvenient for over a quarter of Croydon residents who do not possess their own transport (2001 Census data). The Council is also aware that many residents want to be interred within or close to their neighbourhood. This inters the deceased in a familiar setting and is convenient for family and friends to visit the grave. As a “green” issue, it also reduces road travel for the funeral cortege and all subsequent grave visits, as well as reducing personal expense. To meet these important needs and expand choice for the bereaved, proposals have been agreed to reclaim unused space in old graves at Mitcham Road and Queens Road cemetery in North Croydon. This is part of a wider policy to create cemeteries that can be re-used perpetually.

Author : Alan Storr Alan was born in Melbourne Australia in 1921. He joined the RAAF in October 1941 and served in the Pacific theatre of war. He was an Observer and did a tour of operations with No 7 Squadron RAAF (Beauforts), and later was Flight Navigation Officer of No 201 Flight RAAF (Liberators). He was discharged Flight Lieutenant in February 1946. He has spent most of his Public Service working life in Canberra – first arriving in the National Capital in 1938. He held senior positions in the Department of Air (First Assistant Secretary) and the Department of Defence (Senior Assistant Secretary), and retired from the public service in 1975. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Melbourne University) and was a graduate of the Australian Staff College, ‘Manyung’, Mt Eliza, Victoria. He has been a volunteer at the Australian War Memorial for 21 years doing research into aircraft relics held at the AWM, and more recently research work into RAAF World War 2 fatalities. He has written and published eight books on RAAF fatalities in the eight RAAF Squadrons serving in RAF Bomber Command in WW2.

  • Croydon APA 2.12: Pollards Hill
    Croydon APA 2.12: Pollards Hill Summary and Definition The Archaeological Priority Area covers the summit of Pollards Hill where a possible earthwork is located and includes the site of a recreation ground and a number of houses in Ena Road and Pollards Wood Road. It is classified as a Tier 2 Archaeological Priority Area because it is a distinctive topographical feature with evidence of archaeological interest. Description A series of low banks have fuelled the belief that a prehistoric earthwork is located here and a low bank between 0.5m and 1.3m high surrounds a circular area of flat ground but the age and extent of the earthwork are currently unknown. Excavations that have taken place at the site found little of significance and prehistoric finds have not been made in the area. The Norwood Archaeological Society excavated the site in 1962 but the results were inconclusive. In 1996 a watching brief was carried out by the Museum of London Archaeology Service which did not find any significant archaeological remains but none of the test pits were located in the area of the potential earthwork. The APA is located on the highest point of the local area on a hill comprised of London Clay so it is logical for a prehistoric hillfort to be situated here due to the commanding views across wide stretches of the surrounding area. It is also a possibility that some form of signalling station was located here in the Roman period due to its proximity to the London to Brighton Roman road. The site was farmland until the area around it started to be developed in the early 20 th century.

Although a wide range of memorials is available at the crematorium, most of these are located separately from the cremated remains. They are also placed in communal schemes and do not offer the privacy and individuality of small graves. If you desire an individual location and memorial, perhaps in which your own cremated remains might be added in the future, Croydon Council offer cremated remains graves specifically to meet this need. This leaflet describes the graves at Queens Road and Mitcham Road cemetery. The third location is at the more distant Greenlawn Memorial Park at Warlingham. If this location is convenient for you to visit, please ask for the separate leaflet that describes the cremated remains graves on the ‘Rest Park’ at that location. The London Borough of Croydon has an acute land shortage. The only graves available on new, unused land, both for conventional earth burial and for the burial of cremated remains, is at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The Council realise that this cemetery is inconvenient for many Croydon residents who do not possess their own transport and is also aware that many residents want to be interred within or close to their neighbourhood. This inters the deceased in a familiar setting and is convenient for family and friends to visit the grave.
