GARDENS OF REMEMBRANCE - CROYDON CREMATORIUM.

Croydon Council has offered a burial service since 1861 and opened this crematorium in 1937. Throughout that time Croydon Bereavement Service has remained committed to providing a caring and professional service for all members of the community who are bereaved.

The gardens are designed to present an attractive and serene area where people can visit and remember their loved ones. Around these areas the shrub beds are reserved for placing cremated remains, and the location can be chosen by the bereaved. They can also attend and participate in the placing of the cremated remains with one of our staff members; this is called a ‘witness scatter’. We are also able to offer a short spoken service with the reading of a poem. Once the cremated remains have been placed the location is permanently recorded. When further family members pass away, their cremated remains can also be scattered at the same location. We have attractive features within the grounds, such as the tranquil Walled Garden with dedicated rose beds, and Water features.

Please note: To maintain the dignified appearance of the grounds the placing of flower containers, potted plants, floral tributes in containers or other personal tributes is not permitted in the Gardens of Remembrance. The planting of bulbs, flowers and shrubs around the roses is not permitted. Any unauthorised memorabilia will be removed without prior notice and kept for collection for a short period of time; if not claimed within one month of removal the items will be disposed of.

COLUMBARIUM NICHE MEMORIAL

The Columbarium Niche Memorial has been introduced to meet the needs of those people who would prefer to have cremated remains rest in a personal high quality niche rather than have them laid to rest loosely within the Garden of Remembrance or elsewhere. Each niche cell can accommodate two sets of remains with each casket being a maximum of 25cm high by 36cm wide by 42cm deep.

The Columbarium Niches are located in a tranquil courtyard to the rear of the crematorium’s West chapel. The niches are faced in highly polished black Granite to enhance the visual appeal. The initial inscription on the cover plaque is included in the price with the letters skillfully enhanced in silver enamel. Further inscriptions can be added when necessary for an additional fee and if space permits.

An area in front of the niches has been constructed for the placing of floral tributes.

Please note that it is not permitted for items to be fixed to the plaques or any other part of the niche structure. Any unauthorised items identified will be removed without notice.

On receipt of your order you will receive a layout drawing of your memorial inscription which is designed for you to check, make any corrections, if necessary, and provide approval for us to proceed.

A total of 8 lines are available for the whole inscription. Space can be left for the addition of further inscriptions. When considering wording for the memorial it is not necessary to fill the whole tablet, it is quite acceptable to use only three or four lines and the remaining lines being used at a later date for further inscriptions if required.

Once an order has been placed, the plaque will usually be inscribed and ready to place within 6 weeks.

When this is completed a date and time can be arranged to place the remains into the niche.

reenlawn Memorial Park has been managed Gby the London Borough of Croydon since 1947 and is based on an American style ‘Lawn Cemetery’. To maintain this appearance memorial options are limited to flat tablets. This creates a pleasant visual effect of a continuous area of lawn and permits both an economic and high standard of maintenance to be achieved, the major benefit of this is that grave-owners are relieved of all maintenance responsibilities and liabilities.

The Council supplies black granite tablets in a range of sizes and prices; the inscription is highlighted in silver enamel paint, without a border.

You may wish to source your own supplier and you can contact the Cemetery office for further information regarding regulations; in which case your mason will need to submit a permit application, signed by the grave owner, to the cemetery office. Please note that unauthorised memorials will be removed.

TYPE OF GRAVES / MEMORIALS AVAILABLE: • Full Graves – Provided that instructions are given at the time of the first burial, the grave can be prepared to accept a maximum of 3 coffin burials. Any grave excavated to a depth greater than that required to accommodate more than 2 coffin burials attracts an additional fee for each additional depth required. Cremated remains can also be interred in Full Graves. • Cremated Remains Graves – Part of the cemetery, known as the Rest Parks, have been set aside purely for the interment of cremated remains. These small graves can accommodate a maximum of 4 urns or caskets and are available irrespective of the place of cremation or residence of the deceased.

• Vase Block Memorial: We are now able to offer Vase Block Memorials in the Sanctum Vault area. These are bronze memorial plaques placed on the border of the flower beds around the Sanctum Vault area. They are mainly purchased by people who are seeking a memorial in their local cemetery when their loved ones have been laid to rest elsewhere. The bronze plaques are similar to those placed on the Sanctum Vaults. They are provided with a flower container and leased for an initial period of 15 years. Please contact the cemetery office for further information.

FEES: A table of current fees and charges is available from the Cemeteries Office on request.

The Exclusive Right of Burial has to be purchased for a new grave (commonly known as buying the grave). This right is for a period of 50 years and is renewable on expiry, as the Law currently stands. In addition to this a fee is payable when each burial takes place.

OPENING TIMES The Cemetery is open every day of the week from 9:00am – 5:00pm during the winter months and 9:00am – 7:00pm during the summer months

RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE OF TABLETS – Please note: Any maintenance outside of the recommendations could invalidate your guarantee.

No specific maintenance is required, but if you wish to clean the memorial tablet, the manufacturers recommend that on a fine day you wipe the plaque with a soft cloth and a little water. Dry the memorial thoroughly. Do NOT use an aerosol spray or brush, as this will damage the memorial lettering. Under no circumstances should an abrasive polish be used. If you have further enquiries please telephone the Cemetery Office on 020 8684 3877 or alternatively you may use the Freephone located in the Waiting room at Greenlawn Memorial Park. ou are able to place a Memorial Wooden YBench with an inscribed plaque.

This can be at selected locations in either Mitcham Road Cemetery, Queen’s Road Cemetery or Greenlawn Memorial Park (Warlingham), or in our Gardens of Remembrance.

The timber mostly used is Iroko, which is comparable with teak. It is extremely hard and resistant to all weather conditions.

Our supplier aims not to contribute to rain forest destruction and the 6’ timber benches are constructed from non-tropical and sustainable wood which guarantees the protection of the local ecology.

Croydon Bereavement Services will place the bench at an agreed location. A total of two inscribed bronze plaques, each measuring 30cms x 6.25cms can be purchased to dedicate the bench. On request we can teak oil or varnish the bench for you. If left to weather naturally, it will maintain an attractive silver-grey colour, without detriment to the timber.

The benches are placed on a paved base and as a security precaution we use a galvanised steel-fixing bracket.

Dedications are for an initial period of fifteen years. Staff are available at the Crematorium office to advise you on availability and current prices.

MEMORIAL WOODEN BENCH CONDITIONS On payment of the required fee, the registered memorial owner is permitted to dedicate a plaque to be placed on a memorial wooden bench for an initial lease period of fifteen years. he Book of Remembrance provides a perpetual record and memorial. Day by day the Book lies open Tin the Hall of Remembrance, a page a day for each day of the year. Entries may be viewed on the anniversary date you have requested on the order form. This is the only permanent memorial available.

There are volumes for each quarter of the year. Each leaf of the Books is made of the finest hand made parchment. Even when full, the books will still be kept permanently in the Hall of Remembrance. Entries may consist of two, five or eight lines. Entries consisting of five or eight lines can also include a coat of arms, regimental badge, floral emblem or a memento of your choice at a small additional cost, the crematorium will be happy to advise you.

Replicas containing a copy of the entry, to actual size inscribed in the Book of Remembrance, can be supplied. The replicas will serve the two fold purpose of providing a means whereby distant relatives, or those who are unable to visit the Crematorium may see a copy of the entry in the Book; or the need of those relatives who wish to keep some permanent reminder of the wording. The replicas are in two types: Type A Memorial card, with inscription and space where a photograph could be placed. Type C Miniature Book, Stiff Covered, containing photographs of the Chapels and Gardens; and the inscription.

Replicas either with or without badges, floral emblems etc can be supplied. Please refer to our current price list for details of charges.

ELECTRONIC BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE To those who choose to arrange an entry in the Book of Remembrance we offer the facility to also view the inscription on a screen. This is an image of the original inscription which has been made in the Book.

This image can be viewed using a personal card which will show a copy of your personal inscription including any emblems in the original Book of Remembrance entry.

Unlike the Book of Remembrance, which is seen only on the anniversary date, the personal access card can be used to show the inscription on a screen at any time. As the crematorium is open at week-ends, Bank Holidays and summer evenings, it will provide better access for people wishing to see the memorial at a time convenient to them and as frequently as they choose to visit.

As well as the original inscription, it is possible to arrange for up to four new pages which can be seen on the screen using the same access card.

These additional pages could include a photograph, perhaps of the person commemorated or of a favourite place, a family group or a pet. The photograph could be of anything that recalls memories associated with the person. A page of favourite verse or prose could be shown on a page. Uniquely, we are also offering the possibility of a biography page giving details of a person’s life. The biographies will eventually provide valuable information to future generations.

Everyone who places an entry in the Book of Remembrance will be provided with a personal access card. These will be sent to you as soon as the inscription has been made in the Book. You will no longer have to wait for the entry date to see the inscription for the first time.

BEREAVEMENT SERVICES

PHOTOGRAPHS & DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Photographs are accepted for reproduction as a computer image. The Council accepts the photograph assuming that the applicant has the right to use that photograph and that permission has been received from any living persons who also appear within that photograph. Text showing a name and date can be added to the photograph screen at no additional cost.

Our Studios will assess photographs for quality. If they are found not to reproduce to a suitable quality a refund would be given but limited to the value of the sum paid. Where photographs are required to be enhanced a separate charge will be quoted by the Studio and payment required prior to the work commencing.

While every care will be taken to safely return the photograph, the Council will only be liable for the monetary cost of photographic materials in the event of loss however caused by council agents.

ACCESS CARDS One access card is provided with each new application for an entry in the Book of Remembrance, additional cards may also be purchased. Access cards may also be purchased for existing entries.

CALLIGRAPHY INSCRIBED POEM OR OTHER TEXT (SUCH AS PROSE OR BIOGRAPHY) The format of the inscribed poem or other text is similar to the calligraphy inscription in the Book of Remembrance. The style of the calligraphy will be at the discretion of the Studio artist. A maximum of 21 lines can be accommodated.

POEM OR BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS IN PLAIN TYPE In addition to poems or biographical details other text can be submitted which will be typed in plain type only. This is priced for each screen page of plain type. A maximum of 21 lines can be accommodated.

OTHER INFORMATION The Council reserves the right to decline to accept any inscription or part inscription, text or photograph without giving a reason. Staff can advise you of the suitability of inscriptions and photographs.

FURTHER ASSISTANCE If you require more information, please contact the staff at the crematorium and cemeteries office who will be pleased to assist you and can demonstrate the full benefits of the facility.

GARDENS AND HALL OF REMEMBRANCE INFORMATION

Open hours are everyday, including Christmas and Bank Holidays. Times vary in line with the seasons: 9am - 7pm: April – Oct (until clocks change) 9am - 5pm: Oct (after clocks change) - March.

Floral tribute vases are available from the flower arrangement room next to the Hall of Remembrance for use when placing flowers in the Hall or Chapels.

We ask that flowers are not left in the gardens or grounds as unfortunately loose flowers are often displaced by the wildlife and become unsightly, causing distress to those who have placed them and other visitors. We ask that vases from the Hall of Remembrance are not taken out into the grounds; as they are easily damaged and can cause accidents. Please do not apply labels to a vase as the vases are for use by all our visitors. The use of glass containers, both in the Hall and Gardens is prohibited, to avoid the dangers of broken glass.

Cut flowers, tributes and plants that are dead or wilting will be removed every Monday and Thursday, in order to maintain the appearance of the Hall, Chapels and Gardens of Remembrance. We ask that flowers are not affixed to any memorial, as this can cause permanent damage to the surface of the memorial. To prevent damage to the Books of Remembrance and to ensure all our clients are able to view the books, we ask that no tributes or flowers of any size be placed on the glass cabinets. Regrettably we are not able to offer the facility to water or maintain plants you may leave in the Hall of Remembrance, Chapels or Gardens.

Artificial flowers and memorabilia items are removed from the Hall and Gardens every Thursday. However, we would prefer if our clients would refrain from leaving these items, as it is both distressing for our staff and the person leaving them, when they are removed. Cards may be left in remembrance of birthdays and anniversaries or such occasions. However, we ask your assistance in dating the reverse of your card with the date of the anniversary, to ensure it is not removed until after the date, Christmas Wreaths and tributes are removed in the first week of January.

The Books of Remembrance are turned daily to display the day’s entries. If you are unable to attend on the date of your entry, a member of our Bereavement Services Team may be available to turn the page for you, to see an entry. Please enquire at the cemetery office. In addition all entries are now available to view daily, on the Electronic Book of Remembrance screen (in the Hall of Remembrance), by using a personal swipe card and by access to the web site.

Questions and information about our memorial schemes and the services we provide can be answered by our Bereavement Services Team. They can be contacted by calling in to the cemetery office in person or by telephoning 020 8684 3877 between 9am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday, or email [email protected]

Suggestions and complaints are welcomed from all our clients and these are handled by our Bereavement Services Team, who will report on any action that is to be taken, to the Cemeteries Manager.
