The study of leeches from Lake Gusinoe and its adjacent area offered us the possibility to determine species diversity. Asa result, an updated species list of the Gusinoe Hirudinea fauna (Annelida, Clitellata) has been compiled. There are two orders and three families of leeches in the Gusinoe area: order Rhynchobdellida (families Glossiphoniidae and Piscicolidae) and order Arhynchobdellida (family Erpobdellidae). In total, 6 leech species belonging to 6 genera have been identified. Of these, 3 taxa belonging to the family Glossiphoniidae (Alboglossiphonia heteroclita f. papillosa, Hemiclepsis marginata,andHelobdella stagnalis) and representatives of 3 unidentified species (Glossiphonia sp., Piscicola sp., and Erpobdella sp.) have been recorded. The checklist gives a contemporary overview of the species composition of leeches and information on their hosts or substrates. -

COATZACOALCOS, VERACRUZ I. DATOS GENERALES DEL PUERTO. 1. Nombre del Puerto: Coatzacoalcos.-Anteriormente llamado Puerto México, es un puerto comercial e industrial que, aunado al recinto portuario de Pajaritos, conforma un conjunto de instalaciones portuarias de gran capacidad para el manejo de embarcaciones de gran tamaño y altos volúmenes de carga. Se localiza sobre la margen W del Río Coatzacoalcos. El Puerto de Coatzacoalcos, sede de la cabecera municipal del mismo nombre, es considerado como el polo de desarrollo más importante en el sur de Veracruz, debido a su ubicación estratégica que le ha permitido ser un centro de distribución de distintas mercancías así como por considerarse uno de los puertos más importantes en la producción petroquímica y petrolera del país. El corredor industrial formado entre Coatzacoalcos y Minatitlán comprende una zona de influencia que abarca las ciudades de Cosoleacaque, Nanchital, Agua Dulce y Las Choapas, extendiendo su área de influencia hasta la ciudad de Acayúcan, Veracruz y La Venta, Tabasco. 2. Ubicación y Límites geográficos del puerto. El Puerto de Coatzacoalcos, ubicado al norte del Istmo de Tehuantepec, limita con los municipios de: Chinameca, Moloacán, Oteapan, Minatitlán, Las Choapas, Agua Dulce, Nanchital, e Ixhuatlán del Sureste; y alberga a los Ejidos de: 5 de Mayo, Francisco Villa, La Esperanza, Lázaro Cárdenas, Manuel Almanza, Paso a Desnivel y Rincón Grande; la Villa de Allende, las congregaciones de: Colorado, Guillermo Prieto, Las Barrillas y Mundo Nuevo y a la Cabecera Municipal: La Ciudad de Coatzacoalcos. El puerto está vinculado con el puerto de Salina Cruz, con el que tiene una distancia de 300 Km., Coatzacoalcos ofrece la oportunidad de operar un corredor de transporte intermodal para tráfico internacional de mercancías y constituye la base para el desarrollo de actividades industriales, agropecuarias, forestales y comerciales en la región del Istmo de Tehuantepec. -

Friends of the Kern River Preserve Vol. Five, No. Two AUDUBON-CALIFORNIA 2001 Hummingbird Celebration Features Banding & Latest Research By Betsy Steele hose little sprites of the bird world—hummingbirds—are reliable charmers at the T preserve, especially in mid-summer. Darting around the feeders, dive-bombing interlopers, perching and preening, the hummingbirds go about their business within close range of quiet, delighted observers. Hummingbird photo & art by Alison Sheehey And for the past two years, the preserve has hosted special weekends to celebrate these tiny birds—six species of which can be seen here. This summer, the celebration will be on July 27-29 and August 3-5, with classes, slide shows, lectures, field trips and hummingbird banding. Donald Mitchell, a hummingbird specialist from the University of Minnesota, has been conducting research in the Kern Valley and surrounding mountains for several years. He is particularly interested in finding out how feeders may have affected the distribution and migratory habits of of hummingbirds. And he’s especially knowledgeable about Allen’s, having written the Birds of North America’s account on this species, which so closely resembles the rufous. Mexico Los Tuxtlas Ecological characteristics: This Biosphere Reserve hosts significant ecosystem diver- sity and nine types of primary vegetation. It is the northern limit of the moist forest in the American continent and is a unique case for Mexico and North America due to the con- nection of different types of forests and woodland from the coast to the volcano tops. It is a catchment area as it is one of the rainiest parts of the country. Within the Reserve, 2,698 species of vascular plants, 877 species of vertebrates (46 amphibians, 122 reptiles, 140 mammals and 569 birds), 133species of odonata and 860 species of butterflies have been identified. Among the fauna, 21 species are endemic. It is a key area for birds migrating from North America, Declaration date: 2006 223 of the 569 species of birds registered in the area are Surface area: 155,122 ha Nearctic and Neotropical migrants. Siddallb a Department of Biology, Graduate School and University Center, City University of New York, New York, NY, USA b Division of Invertebrate Zoology, American Museum of Natural History, New York, NY, USA Received 15 July 2003; revised 29 August 2003 Abstract A remarkable diversity of life history strategies, geographic distributions, and morphological characters provide a rich substrate for investigating the evolutionary relationships of arhynchobdellid leeches. The phylogenetic relationships, using parsimony anal- ysis, of the order Arhynchobdellida were investigated using nuclear 18S and 28S rDNA, mitochondrial 12S rDNA, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence data, as well as 24 morphological characters. Thirty-nine arhynchobdellid species were selected to represent the seven currently recognized families. Sixteen rhynchobdellid leeches from the families Glossiphoniidae and Piscicolidae were included as outgroup taxa. Analysis of all available data resolved a single most-parsimonious tree. The cladogram conflicted with most of the traditional classification schemes of the Arhynchobdellida. Monophyly of the Erpobdelliformes and Hirudini- formes was supported, whereas the families Haemadipsidae, Haemopidae, and Hirudinidae, as well as the genera Hirudo or Ali- olimnatis, were found not to be monophyletic. The results provide insight on the phylogenetic positions for the taxonomically problematic families Americobdellidae and Cylicobdellidae, the genera Semiscolex, Patagoniobdella, and Mesobdella, as well as genera traditionally classified under Hirudinidae. El proceso resultó sumamente conflictivo como consecuencia de diversos hechos: el conflicto que se generó entre dos grupos de campesinos, desde el mismo inicio del proceso, por obtener la dirección del comité agrario; las alianzas que los dos grupos establecieron con actores políticos como el Ayuntamiento, la guerrilla agraria y las autoridades estatales y nacionales, alianzas que contribuyeron a modificar el balance de poder; y los actos en los que estuvo involucrado un ingeniero de la Comisión Nacional Agraria, destacado en la población, mismos que provocarían un enfrentamiento armado entre los ejidatarios de Catemaco y de Maxacapan.
