Milkshake Use a Tall Plastic Glass. Start with About an Inch of Milk in the Bottom Milkshake Use a tall plastic glass. Start with about an inch of milk in the bottom. Fill with vanilla ice cream of frozen yogurt. Add coffee—not too much. The top of the ice cream should look a little melted, but be visible. Mix and top with cinnamon, and/or whipped cream. (This can be varied with yogurt flavors, chocolate syrup, etc.) Recipe Name: Creamsicle Drink Recipe Ingredients: orange juice, seltzer, milk optional: whipped cream, cinnamon Preparation Instructions: Fill cup 2/3 of the way with orange juice. Add seltzer water ("soda") and a little milk or milk-like beverage. Stir. Finish with whipped cream and sprinkle cinnamon on top if you're so inclined. Mmm ... Recipe Name: Sugar-free Coffee or Fruit Flavored Yogurt Recipe Ingredients: round 8 oz plain yogurt, 1 - 1 1/2 packs of sugar substitute (equal stuff), and either banana, apple or 1/8 cup of coffee Preparation Instructions: put yogurt in bowl, add the amount of sugar substitute you want to your liking (if you use banana you will need less), and stir. Add chopped up apple, banana, or a few spoonfuls of coffee (that isn’t too hot). Stir, and enjoy! Recipe Name: Mocha Shake Recipe Ingredients: Vanilla soft serve, chocolate syrup, coffee Preparation Instructions: Fill the cup with ice cream until you've got about an inch of space left. Pour on a goodly amount of chocolate syrup (say half an inch) and then just a bit of coffee. The flavor is mostly from the ice cream and chocolate, and the coffee helps to melt the ice cream and get it to the right consistency. You usually have to fiddle with the amount of coffee to get it just right. Recipe Name: Frappuccino Recipe Ingredients: Coffee Chocolate Soft Serve Preparation Instructions: 4/5 soft serve 1/5 coffee mix Very easy, and amazingly good. Mix it up and enjoy. Honey Cinnamon Tortilla Shell Smear honey on a tortilla. Place in a bowl. Sprinkle with cinnamon, raisins, and granola (apple pieces also an option). Heat in the microwave until honey mixture is slightly bubbly (approx. 2 minutes) Cottage toast Cottage cheese, 2 pieces wheat toast, honey, wheat germ, and bananas Spread cottage cheese thickly on toast. Once the pizza comes out of the oven, apply a thin layer of sauce that will warm as it sits on the pizza, and that's it! Reversing the order of the ingredients makes for a different taste, and allows the oils from the cheese to soak down into the bread while cooking. Protein- meats, fish, eggs Recipe Name: EZ Tuna Melt Recipe Ingredients: tuna salad, two slices of cheese, two slices of bread Preparation Instructions: 1. Sandwich two slices of cheese between two layers of tuna salad on a small plate. 2. Toast two slices of bread. (Toast it well.) 3. Microwave the small plate for 45 seconds. 4. Microwave for 45 seconds. On a separate plate, put some lettuce on the roll, then drizzle the caser dressing over the lettuces (not on the roll itself: the bread will soak it up if you do it that way). Then, transfer the chicken breast with the melted cheese onto the roll, on top of the lettuce and dressing. Recipe Name: Tuna-Luna Recipe Ingredients: tuna (plain) red onions garbanzo beans (a.k.a. chic peas) lemon olive oil Preparation Instructions: Put 2-3 scoops of tuna into a bowl. Add red onions (about 1/3 cup). Add 2-3 scoops of garbanzo beans. Squeeze two lemon-wedges-worth of lemon juice onto everything. Lastly, add olive oil to taste. It's important you add the oil last, as it will keep the tuna from absorbing the lemon juice. Recipe Name: Deviled Eggs Recipe Ingredients: hard-boiled eggs mayonnaise mustard relish paprika salt pepper Preparation Instructions: Peel eggs and cut in half, removing egg yolks. In an empty bowl, mash yolks while mixing in about a tablespoon each of mayo, mustard, and relish for each egg.

Let’s Crank Some Ice Cream! The history of ice harvesting, the ice industry, refrigeration, and making ice cream Kathi Elkins 7-29-19 OLLI: Summer 2019 Ice Storage and Ice Houses: 1780 BC --- ice house in northern Mesopotamian 1100 BC --- evidence of ice pits in China By 400 BC --- Persian engineers had mastered techniques of constructing yakhchāl to store ice harvested from nearby mountains. 300 BC --- Alexander the Great (snow pits to hold snow and ice) 200s AD --- Romans (snow shops) Cold springs, root cellars Ice Houses: Yakhchāl (this one at Yazd, Iran) is a Persian ice pit or a type of evaporative cooler. Above ground, the structure had a domed shape, but had a subterranean storage space. It was often used to store ice and food. The subterranean space coupled with the thick heat-resistant construction material insulated the storage space all year. Ice Houses: Ice houses in England/UK. Ice Houses: Croome's thatched ice house, Worcestershire, UK Ice Houses: Botany Bay Icehouse, Edisto Island, SC Ice Houses: Ice house designs usually began as an underground egg-shaped cellar. This ice house, dating from 1780s and designed by architect John Nash, was discovered in 2018 buried under London streets. In 1822, following a very mild winter, William Leftwich chartered a vessel to Norway to collect 300 tons of ice harvested from crystal-clear frozen lakes. Previous imports had been lost at sea, or melted while baffled customs officials dithered over how to tax such unique cargo. John Nash designed the Royal Pavilion at Brighton, as well as Buckingham Palace.

  • Daisy at Home Recipe for a Small Glacier
Daisy at Home Recipe for a Small Glacier Supplies Scientific Concepts • 1 pint of chocolate swirl or Glacier: A huge, thick sheet marble ice cream. of moving ice. They are often found in mountains, • 3 of your favorite kinds of cookies. but can be found in other places, too. Washington • 1/4 cup of light-colored was half covered in a syrup (butterscotch, glacier during the Ice Age! marshmallow, etc.) • Plastic sandwich bag or similar. Glacial till: Materials, such as rocks and dirt, left • A clear bowl. behind when a glacier • A spoon. melts. Most of the soil in the Seattle area is made of glacial till. Daisy at Home Recipe for a Small Glacier Instructions 1. Crumble up the cookies and put them in the bowl. This represents dirt and rocks that will become glacial till. 2. Put two big scoops of the ice cream on top of the crumbled cookies. Glaciers begin as clean snow and ice, but they pick up dirt and rocks from the ground as they travel. So, the ice cream with its swirls represents this “dirty” glacier! 3. Slide the plastic sandwich bag over your hand. Then, slowly push down or “smoosh” the ice cream so it oozes! What do you notice? What happens to the cookie crumbles? A glacier moves in a similar way. As more snow falls on it, the added weight causes the glacier to “ooze” or “flow,” pushing the dirt in all directions. 4. To see how glaciers flow, heat up your light-colored syrup and pour it over the ice cream.
