The Paleolithic Age, the First Culture History Gallery 1 in History We have now arrived in the Paleolithic Room. During the Paleolithic Age, humans started to use fire, invented tools, and developed a culture. The first humans inhabited Korea from about 700,000 years ago. They were hunter-gatherers and led a nomadic lifestyle, moving from place to place to find sufficient food and seeking shelter in caves or on the banks of rivers. The people of the Paleolithic Age initially used natural stones as tools, but gradually began to break and shape them to remove their efficiency. Large, clumsy tools were used at first, but over time the tools were refined and a variety of sharper and smaller tools were developed for different purposes. During the later period of the Paleolithic Age, the stone tools were used in conjunction with pieces of timber or horn. As stone working techniques became even more developed, it was possible to reproduce the same tool. - 2 - Prehistoric and Ancient 2. The Making of Chipped Stone Tools History Gallery 1 [Narration] These are stone tools from the Paleolithic Age. [Tourist] They’re tools? They look like normal stones to me. [Narration] They do, yes, but they really are chipped stone tools that Paleolithic people made and used for many different purposes. [Tourist] How did they chip the stones? [Narration] The simplest method they used was to smash one stone with another stone and hope for the best! Later on, they used stone hammers or horns to chip the stone in a more directed, controlled manner.

Baekje Cultural Land 1. Baekje Cultural Land 2. Baekje history and culture museum - 1 - Baekje Cultural Land 1. Entrance Baekje Cultural Land, the Revival of Baekje Welcome to Baekje Cultural Land, a reconstruction of the ancient Kingdom of Baekje. Baekje dominated the south-western part of the Korean Peninsula from 18 B.C. to 600 A.D. In addition to Baekje, two other kingdoms concurrently occupied the peninsula. They were Goguryeo, which was based in the north of Korea and eastern China, and Silla, based in the south-east of the Korean Peninsula. These three kingdoms influenced each other’s development through a series of conflicts and alliances which unfolded over a 700-year period known as the Three Kingdoms Period. During the 4th century, Baekje’s territory extended towards China under the powerful authoritarian leadership of King Geunchogo. In the following century, the king adopted Buddhism as the national faith and cultivated an independent Buddhist culture. In fact, Baekje was described in various Chinese historical sources as a kingdom with numerous Buddhist temples and pagodas. This brilliant Buddhist culture contributed to the foundation of ancient Japanese culture. During a time when means of transportation weren’t as developed as they are today, Baekje was the conduit for Northeast Asian cultural exchange between China and Japan in terms of art, religion and academic studies. Here at Baekje Cultural Land, you will be introduced to the magnificent culture of Baekje. The palaces, temples, pagodas and tombs that you will see here were reconstructed following ten years of - 2 - intensive historical research.

  • Seo Hui's Compromise and Demands for the Goryeo Dynasty
Territorial Diplomacy: Seo Hui's Compromise and Demands for the Goryeo Dynasty Jungmin Bae, Jin Young Kim, Do Hyun Choi, Sunyoung Hwang, Andrew Chanho Kim Senior Division Group Performance Process Paper: 477 words The brilliant diplomacy demonstrated by Seo Hui, a civil servant during the Goryeo dynasty, when dealing with the Khitans in 993 C.E. is literally a textbook case of “conflict and compromise”—many Korean history textbooks include the famous story of how Seo Hui averted war with the Khitans and expanded his country’s territory with only his wits. The compromise he engineered in the face of serious conflict is still praised as a solution that effectively solved the problem at hand by accurately assessing the geopolitical situation of that time. Although we knew Seo Hui’s territorial diplomacy would be a good topic for this year’s National History Day, we had significant difficulty finding primary sources to corroborate our performance. We were puzzled at the dearth of original documents dating back to the Goryeo dynasty, as most of us had expected detailed records like The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which were written during the dynasty which succeeded Goryeo. Through research, we learned that the lack of primary documents from the Goryeo era could be attributed to the Japanese Invasions of Korea(1592-1598) during which Goryeo documents were destroyed. However, we were luckily able to gain access to online versions of Goryeosa and Goryeosajeolyo, historical records of Goryeo written during the Joseon dynasty. Although these are secondary sources, they were written before Goryeo records were lost, thus ensuring their accuracy.

  • Transition from the Prehistoric Age to the Historic Age: the Early Iron Age on the Korean Peninsula
Transition from the Prehistoric Age to the Historic Age: The Early Iron Age on the Korean Peninsula KisUNg Y i introduction The appearance of metal objects in the prehistoric period was of great sig- nificance. As iron implements became accepted as common tools used in everyday life and agricultural productivity increased, complex societies appeared and eventually developed into states. For this reason, archaeologists divide prehistoric times into pe- riods based on the material attributes of new technologies. The periods that have been defined for most regions of the world are not much different from those used in the archaeology of Korea. Korean archeologists define the Early iron Age as the period from 300 b.c. to 100 b.c. during which cast ironware was distributed by the Yan (燕) dynasty. Al- though ironware is the most significant material marker of this cultural phase, the mass production of iron objects in general and ironware in particular was not fully realized during this period ( KAs 2010 : 123). situated between the Bronze Age and the Proto– Three Kingdoms period, the Early iron Age is culturally significant because it serves as the transitional period between the Prehistoric and Historic eras. Despite this sig- nificance, the cultural characteristics of the Early iron Age, its area of origin, and its relationship with earlier indigenous cultures have yet to be explained. This article examines the concept of an “Early iron Age” in Korea and the cultural characteristics that define it. it also reviews various issues and debates within studies on the Early iron Age. For instance, in Korea the Early iron Age is defined materially primarily by the presence of Jeomtodae (clay-striped) pottery and slender bronze daggers.

Leao-ho, Fochler-Hauke 1941: 42-44 et passim). Its main basin is located between 42° 55’ N 123° 35’ E and 40° 40’ N 122° 10’ E, and it runs in a southwesterly direction over a distance of some 300 kms. The river divides southern Manchuria into two halves known as Liaoxi 遼西 ‘West of the Liao’ and Liaodong 遼東 ‘East of the Liao’, respectively. The principal feature of Liaodong is the mountainous Liaodong Peninsula, located between the Sea of Bohai 渤海 on the west and the Yellow Sea 黄海 Huang Hai on the east. Together with the Shandong 山東 Peninsula, Liadong has since ancient times served as a link between Korea, Manchuria, and China proper (Janhunen 1996: 3-4). The Liao main river is formed of two source rivers, the Xiliao 西遼 ‘West- ern Liao’ and Dongliao 東遼 ‘Eastern Liao’. The Dongliao is a rather small entity, flowing down from the mountains of the Liaodong Peninsula, while the Xiliao is a large system of rivers, which add some 1,000 kms to the total length of the Liao. The Xiliao, flowing across the relatively flat plain of Liaoxi, is, in turn, formed of two source rivers, the Laoha 老哈 in the south and the Shira Muren 西拉木倫 Xila Mulun in the north.

Existing restoration plans rely on old records and excavation reports and are based on the present topography. However, historic cities have undergone significant natural and anthropogenic topographic changes such as alluvial sediment accumulation and uneven terrain construction. Therefore, considering only the present topography is misleading. Thus, to understand a historic city’s structure more appropriately, it is necessary to comprehend the ancient geographic environment. This study provides an analysis and GIS visualization of the ancient topography of a historic city, Sabi capital city of the Baekje Dynasty, which collapsed 1,500 years ago. 1. INTRODUCTION 2. Mounded Tomb Cultures of Three Kingdoms Period Korea and Yamato Japan: A Study of Golden Regalia and Cultural Interactions THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Angela Jean Haugen Graduate Program in East Asian Studies The Ohio State University 2010 Master's Examination Committee: John Huntington, Advisor Susan Huntington Thomas Kasulis Copyright by Angela Jean Haugen 2010 Abstract This paper examines the relationships between the Three Kingdoms period Korea (57 B.C.E. to 668 C.E.) and the Kofun period (250-538 C.E.) in Japan. The methodology of this study includes examination of the mounded tombs and grave goods through photographs and English translations of historical texts and various secondary sources. We know that there was contact between the peoples on the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago at this time. This contact consisted of trade, war, and migration of the elite families who wore gold jewelry of the type found in the tombs as well as the importation of skilled laborers. Due to the similarities in tomb construction, visual vocabulary, and identical shamanistic iconography, it is the conclusion of this paper that the people who wore this jewelry were a unified culture of political and spiritual leaders. The elite families from Baekje and Yamato Wa in particular participated in a shared culture, which was shamanistically ruled, with no apparent cultural boundaries between the areas due to intermarriage between Baekje and Yamato Wa families. Establishment of this shared culture offers a new perspective on what have been contentious issues among Korean and Japanese scholars.
