University of Florida, 2006 A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education in the Department of Child, Family, and Community Sciences in the College of Education and Human Performance at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2017 Major Professor: Rosa Cintrón © 2017 Natalia Leal Toro ii ABSTRACT Research points to Latino/a parents as an important source of motivation and support for high achieving Latino/a students who are the first in their families to go to college (Arellano & Padilla, 2006; Gándara, 1982; 1994; Hurtado & Sinha, 2006; Zalaquett, 2005); however, very little is known about their experience as they parent children whose educational paths are so different from their own. Cultural values such as collectivism and familism play a unique role in the level of connection between these parents and their children (Suárez-Orozco & Suárez-Orozco, 1995), creating dynamics that merit exploration. This dissertation qualitatively examines how seven Latino/a parents of first-generation college students pursuing a PhD expressed the parenting characteristics outlined in Parent Development Theory (Mowder, 2005). Furthermore, this study explores how these parents experienced their daughters’ higher education journey. Moustakas’ (1994) transcendental phenomenology was utilized in analyzing parents’ voices. The textural and structural descriptions of major and minor themes provided the essence of the parents’ experience. Example of themes are: “Pero la Apoyo - Uncertainty and Support for the PhD”, “Siempre Juntos - High Levels of Interaction”, and “Amor Compasivo - Distance, Pain and Sacrifice”. Recommendations include support for pre-doctoral preparation initiatives, co-curricular innovations, and the exploration of the impact of modern technologies on the communication between parents and their children while in college. iii To my loving husband, son, and parents for making this achievement possible. Shea 2020 Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between guitar performance and the functional components of musical organization in popular-music songs from 1954 to 2019. Under an ecological theory of affordances, three distinct interdisciplinary approaches are employed: empirical analyses of two stylistically contrasting databases of popular-music song transcriptions, a motion-capture study of performances by practicing musicians local to Columbus, Ohio, and close readings of works performed and/or composed by popular- music guitarists. Since then the singer revisited a selection of international standards from a range of genres – from Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” and the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You” to “Moon River” by Henry Mancini, popularized by Audrey Hepburn – in a collection titled French Touch, which was warmly welcomed by fans around the world (more than 250K albums sold worldwide). This project was successfully followed by an extensive international tour. Bruni, whose talents as an authentic singer-songwriter were discovered 18 years ago, is rarely without her notepads. She writes her songs by hand, a process that’s very important to her – she has an irrepressible need for this immediate contact between emotions and paper, and this passion shines through in the collection of songs on this new album. She wrote them in a slow process that accelerated into fruition over a few weeks last autumn. Month after month, something rose, just like in the first single of her new album "Quelque Chose", that speaks about the awakening of some mysterious thing. At the end of the journey is a return to the very essence of the artist’s feelings and a naturally eponymous album. As always with Bruni, the songs speak about the eternal desire to love and the great adventure of our lives but they also reveal an innate sense of freedom and fantasy. This eponymous album (released October 9th 2020) is the reflection of Carla Bruni herself, a wholehearted embracing of her true self.

It takes the financial crises of 2001 in Argentina and 2008 in Spain to argue that, while both events have precipitated circumstances inherent to all economic crises—unemployment, austerity, migration, increased poverty—, they have also disclosed that crisis, far from being an extraordinary event, is for most a quotidian experience. In so doing, this work as a whole proposes that attention to the cultural politics of emotions sheds light on the nature of crisis as an ongoing condition under neoliberal governance. This dissertation advances recent cultural analysis of neoliberalism in the field of transatlantic Peninsular and Latin American studies that often lack particular attention to the centrality of the politics of emotions in processes of signification and subjectification. Landscapes of Survival begins with an analysis of the documentaries Otro Destino (Argentina, 2003) and En tierra extraña (Spain, 2015) to explore the feeling of loss that structures the lives of young migrants whose life projects have been overturned by the crises.
