This work presents results of two years collecting efforts within the project “The role of the alpine karst area in Bulgaria as reservoir of species diversity”. It summarizes distribution data of 44 terrestrial gastropods from the Bulgarian part of Alibotush Mts. Twenty-seven species are newly recorded from the Alibotush Mts., 13 were con- firmed, while 4 species, previously known from the literature, were not found. In the gastropod fauna of Alibotush Mts. predominate species from Mediterranean zoogeographic complex. A large part of them is endemic species, and this demonstrates the high conservation value of large limestone areas in respect of terrestrial gastropods. Discovery of Living Anguispira alternata (Say, 1816) (Discidae: Gastropoda) in Louisiana, USA Russell L. Minton*, Erin L. Basiger, and Casey B. Nolan Department of Biology, University of Louisiana at Monroe, 700 University Avenue, Monroe, LA 71209-0520, USA (Accepted January 29, 2010) Of the 13 recognized species of Anguispira in the US, 2 are listed as occurring in Louisiana (NatureServe 2009). (A) Anguispira alternata (Say, 1819) is a pulmonate land snail found throughout the eastern US, including states bordering the Mississippi River to the west (Hubricht 1985). The other species, A. strongylodes (Pfeiffer, 1854), is found across the southern US, with a range that narrowly overlaps A. alternata at its northern boundary. The shell of A. strongylodes differs from that of A. alternata by lacking streaks along the base and the umbilicus and by having smaller spots along the shell periphery (Pilsbry 1948). Hubricht (1985) listed only fossil A. alternata as occurring in Louisiana and Mississippi, while NatureServe (2009) lists it as extirpated in both states. Pilsbry viewed strongylodes as a weakly differentiated subspecies of A. alternata endemic to east-central Texas, although Hubricht (1960) later elevated strongylodes to species status and established its currently recognized range (Hubricht 1985). During a recent survey of Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge (32.6°N, 92.04°W) in Monroe, LA, we collected (B) a number of living and dead specimens that matched the original description and other published images of A. alternata and not A. strongylodes. These specimens possessed the color patterns described by Pilsbry (1948), most notably prominent spots on the periphery and streaks on the underside that separate A. -

SPECIES FACT SHEET Scientific Name: Juga hemphilli hemphilli (Henderson 1935) Common Name: barren juga Phylum: Mollusca Class: Gastropoda Order: Neotaenioglossa Family: Semisulcospiridae Taxonomic Note: Past genetic analysis by Lee et al. (2006) based on incorrectly identified museum voucher specimens suggested reassignment of the related subspecies Juga hemphilli dallesensis (and therefore the Juga hemphilli conspecifics, including Juga hemphilli hemphilli) to the genus Elimia. However, Foighil et al. (2009) conducted an additional analysis and determined that Juga hemphilli is indeed most closely related to other western Juga and should not be reassigned to the genus Elimia. Turgeon et al. (1998) do not recognize any subspecies of Juga hemphilli. Conservation Status: Global Status: G2T1 (May 2009) National Status: United States (N1) (June 2000) State Statuses: Oregon (S1), Wahington (S1) (NatureServe 2015) IUCN Red List: NE – Not evaluated Technical Description: This subspecies was originally described as Goniobasis hemphilli hemphilli (Henderson 1935). Burch (1982; 1989) revised this subspecies to the genus Juga to reflect the distribution of taxa west of the Continental Divide. Adult: Juga is a genus of medium-sized, aquatic, gilled snails traditionally treated as part of the subfamily Semisulcospirinae within the Pleuroceridae family, although the Semisulcospirinae subfamily was recently elevated to family level based on morphological and molecular evidence (Strong and Köhler 2009). The Pleuroceridae and Semisulcospiridae families both differ from the Hydrobiidae family in that the males lack a verge (male copulatory organ). The genus Juga is distinct from related pleurocerid snails based on reproductive anatomy and egg mass characters (Taylor 1966), as well as features of the ovipositor pore, radula, midgut, kidney, and pallial gonoduct (Strong and Frest 2007). -

Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland
Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland Introduction There are 50 known species of land snail found in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) which represents about half of the 100 UK species. However molluscs are an under-recorded taxon group so it is possible that more species could be found and equally possible that a few may now be extinct in our two counties. There was a 20 year period of enthusiastic mollusc recording between 1967 and 1986, principally by museum staff, which account for the majority of species. Whilst records have increased again in the last three years thanks to NatureSpot, some species have not been recorded for over 30 years. All our land snails are in the class Gastropoda and the order Pulmonata. Whilst some of these species require damp habitats and are generally found near to aquatic habitats, they are all able to survive out of water. A number of species are largely restricted to calcareous habitats so are only found at a few sites. The sizes stated refer to the largest dimension of the shell typically found in adult specimens. There is much variation in many species and juveniles will of course be smaller. Note that the images are all greater than life size and not all the to the same scale. I have tried to display them at a sufficiently large scale so that the key features are visible. Always refer to the sizes given in the text. Status refers to abundance in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55). However molluscs are generally under- recorded so our understanding of their distribution could easily change. -

Abstract Fauna of molluscs from Planes de Son and Mata de València (Alt Àneu, Pallars Sobirà, Catalan Pyrenees): bibliographic survey and new data.— The survey of bibliograpic information on the pres- ence of molluscs at the Planes de Son and Mata de València (municipality of Alt Àneu, county of Pallars Sobirà, Catalan Pyreness) has accounted for a list of 33 species of molluscs (seven of them are slugs) inhabiting historically this area. A current field survey (2006-2007) has detected 50 species of molluscs not slugs, two of these species are splitted in two subspecies. Detailed data from both faunistic inventories are provided.
