Songs can include spooky, dark, or classic-but-cheesy Halloween tunes (such as Monster Mash). Or you can imagine the wide variety of costumes and use those themes. I’ve included a few common themes such as Sci-Fi and Spy Thriller in my list. Over the years I’ve gotten many of these song suggestions from various online forums, other instructors, and by simply searching online music sources for “Halloween”, “James Bond”, “Witch”, “Ghost” and other key words. Israeli Popular Music Edwin Seroussi In the early period of Israeli statehood, the means for the support of musical performance, composition, dissemination and education were in the mostly in the hands of governmental agencies and thus controlled by the dominant political and cultural elites. This control by the establishment gradually weakened, particularly following the decentralization of the mass media since the early 1980s. Popular music, a characteristic modern urban phenomenon, and its hallmark, the appeal to heterogenic populations, cosmopolitanism, industrial production and mass distribution in an open market, became then the main mode of music making and consumption in Israel as it did at a global level. From the 1920ies up to the present Popular music defined along these lines first appeared in Israel with the growth of large cities (Tel-Aviv-Jaffa, Haifa, Jerusalem) propelled by the immigration of professional musicians from Poland, Germany and the former Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 1920s and early 1930s. These musicians developed in Israel new musical venues similar to those of the European cities, such as musical theaters and cabarets where contemporary European songs sung to new Hebrew texts were mixed with new compositions by local composers in genres such as the tango and the fox-trot. The popular music industry in Israel was launched in the mid-1930s when the first commercial record company was founded and a radio station opened in Palestine under the British Mandate that included Hebrew broadcasts. Up to the 1970s, popular music was dominated by tight state-controlled cultural policies and mass media.

London and New York: Routledge Abstract This chapter will address a transnational network of relationships within electronic dance music in the context of the machine aesthetic of techno. It will be shown that a sense of a global music scene is nevertheless possible. Beyond historically shaped post-colonial and socio-economic links that underpin a range of global popular cultural forms, the techno aesthetic arguably responds to, and inoculates against, a sense of post-human alienation and a dominance of electronic communication and information technologies of the technoculture. Accompanied by a form of futurism, techno scenes embrace the radical potential of information technologies in a seemingly deterritorialised manner, producing locally specific responses to the global technoculture that can differ in aesthetics and identity politics. In this sense, the electronic dance music floor embodies a plurality of competing “technocracies”. Introduction This chapter addresses transnational, yet locally definable, electronic dance music culture as it engages with and intervenes globalising experiences of urbanised life, and the digitally networked information and communication technologies that characterise and dominate what is currently know as “the technoculture” (Shaw, 2008; Robins and Webster, 1999; Constance and Ross, 1991).
