Berger* Abstract The prominent but complex genus Psychotria (Rubiaceae: Psychotrieae) is one of the largest genera of flow- ering plants and its generic circumscription has been controversial for a long time. Recent DNA-phyloge- netic studies in combination with a re-evaluation of morphological characters have led to a disintegration process that peaked in the segregation of hundreds of species into various genera within the new sister tribe Palicoureeae. These studies have also shown that species of Psychotria subg. Heteropsychotria are nested within Palicourea, which was traditionally separated by showing an ornithophilous (vs. entomophilous) pol- lination syndrome. In order to render the genera Palicourea and Psychotria monophyletic groups, all species of subg. Heteropsychotria have to be transferred to Palicourea and various authors and publications have provided some of the necessary combinations. In the course of ongoing research on biotic interactions and chemodiversity of the latter genus, the need for a comprehensive and modern compilation of species of Pali courea in its new circumscription became apparent. A total number of 18 plots were placed within the remnant patches of the vegetation on either side of the river. In total, 172 species of vascular plant has been recorded. The cluster analysis suggested four types of plant communities in the study area viz., the Mallotus- Desmodium-Rhus shrubland and the Syzygium venosum woodland communities, which are located in V-shaped valleys and the Albizia-Flueggea woodland and Quercus glauca woodland communities located in U-shaped valleys. In broad-spectrum, the topographic features and environmental variables i.e. litter accumulation and flooding condition might also have some impact on the species composition of the plant communities of this vegetation. Taxonomy and Conservation Status of Pteridophyte Flora of Sri Lanka R.H.G. Ranil and D.K.N.G. Pushpakumara University of Peradeniya Introduction The recorded history of exploration of pteridophytes in Sri Lanka dates back to 1672-1675 when Poul Hermann had collected a few fern specimens which were first described by Linneus (1747) in Flora Zeylanica. The majority of Sri Lankan pteridophytes have been collected in the 19th century during the British period and some of them have been published as catalogues and checklists. However, only Beddome (1863-1883) and Sledge (1950-1954) had conducted systematic studies and contributed significantly to today’s knowledge on taxonomy and diversity of Sri Lankan pteridophytes (Beddome, 1883; Sledge, 1982). Thereafter, Manton (1953) and Manton and Sledge (1954) reported chromosome numbers and some taxonomic issues of selected Sri Lankan Pteridophytes. Recently, Shaffer-Fehre (2006) has edited the volume 15 of the revised handbook to the flora of Ceylon on pteridophyta (Fern and FernAllies). The local involvement of pteridological studies began with Abeywickrama (1956; 1964; 1978), Abeywickrama and Dassanayake (1956); and Abeywickrama and De Fonseka, (1975) with the preparations of checklists of pteridophytes and description of some fern families. Dassanayake (1964), Jayasekara (1996), Jayasekara et al., (1996), Dhanasekera (undated), Fenando (2002), Herat and Rathnayake (2004) and Ranil et al., (2004; 2005; 2006) have also contributed to the present knowledge on Pteridophytes in Sri Lanka. However, only recently, Ranil and co workers initiated a detailed study on biology, ecology and variation of tree ferns (Cyatheaceae) in Kanneliya and Sinharaja MAB reserves combining field and laboratory studies and also taxonomic studies on island-wide Sri Lankan fern flora. -

Botanical Diversity at Soneva Kiri
BOTANICAL DIVERSITY AT SONEVA KIRI Results from a preliminary botanical survey at Soneva Kiri Resort Martijn van Berlo Summary Soneva Kiri resort is situated on the island of Koh Kood, which is one of the most undisturbed islands of Thailand. The amount of different ecosystems present, along with the relatively unspoiled environment, causes the island to support a very large diversity of life. To get a better understanding of how rich this diversity actually is, an introductory botanical survey was conducted on the resort property. This report will first give a better insight into why such a large biological diversity can be found here. The plants focused on in this botanical survey were mainly the most common or the most notable examples found on the property of Soneva Kiri Resort. During the survey over 200 different species were found, of which some 121 different genera and species could be identified, classified under 56 different families. About 80 different species found could not be identified for a number of reasons. Sometimes the trees were just too tall to be able to take a look at any fruits or flowers, or the family under which the species is classified required such detailed knowledge that it was at the time of the survey not possible to identify them. The latter groups of plants were mostly figs, ferns, and orchids. It is estimated that Koh Kood is home to well over 1000 different plant species, so many more additions to this survey could be made. Many of these plants have an important ecological, economical or medicinal significance in various areas where they naturally occur. -

Abstract An intensive floristic investigation provides the first systematic and comprehensive account of the floral diversity of Baraiyadhala National Park of Bangladesh, and recognizes 528 wild taxa belonging to 337 genera and 73 families (Magnoliids and Eudicots) in the park. Habit analysis reveals that trees (179 species) and herbs (174 species) constitute the major categories of the plant community followed by shrubs (95 species), climbers (78 species), and two epiphytes. Status of occurrence has been assessed for proper conservation management and sustainable utilization of the taxa resulting in 165 (31.25%) to be rare, 23 (4.36%) as endangered, 12 (2.27%) as critically endangered and 4 species (0.76%) are found as vulnerable in the forest. Fabaceae is the dominant family represented by 75 taxa, followed by Rubiaceae (47 taxa), Malvaceae (28 species), Asteraceae (27 species) and Euphorbiaceae (24 species). Twenty-three families represent single species each in the area. Introduction Baraiyadhala National Park as one of the important Protected Areas (PAs) of Bangladesh that lies between 22040.489´-22048´N latitude and 90040´-91055.979´E longitude and located in Sitakundu and Mirsharai Upazilas of Chittagong district. The forest is under the jurisdiction of Baraiyadhala Forest Range of Chittagong North Forest Division. The park encompasses 2,933.61 hectare (7,249 acres) area and is classified under Category II of the International IUCN classification of protected areas (Hossain, 2015). -
