Sweet, is a perennial herb or shrub, commonly known as Florida Keys Indian mallow and distributed in tropical regions. The present study deals with macro and micromorphological investigations of leaf, stem, root and flower of A. hirtum, which assists in identification and standardization of the plant in both entire and powdered forms. Keywords: Malvaceae, Abutilon hirtum, macro and micromorphology. INTRODUCTION Malvaceae (the mallow family) is the family of flowering plants containing about 243 genera and 4225 species. It is distributed all over the world in tropical regions and includes the economically important plants such as cotton, okra and other ornamental shrubs.1 Abutilon is a large genus belonging to this family, comprising about 150 annual or perennial herbs, shrubs or even small trees. It is native to tropical and subtropical countries of America, Africa, Asia and Australia.2,3 The genus has a significant importance which is attributed to valuable fibers obtained from different species of the genus such as A. theophrastii and also due to several species grown as garden ornamentals such as A. ochsenii and A. vitifolium.4 Phytochemical studies of the genus revealed the presence of flavonoids, sterols, triterpenes, anthocyanins and fatty acids.5 Abutilon hirtum is a perennial herb or shrub, 0.5-2.5m in height [Synonym: A. -

Aglaia is the only source of the group of about 50 known representatives of compounds that bear a unique cyclopenta[b]tetrahydrobenzofuran skeleton. These compounds are more commonly called rocaglate or rocaglamide derivatives, or flavaglines, and have been found to have anticancer and pesticidal properties. Abstract This study was carried out to provide the baseline data on the composition and distribution of the angiosperms and to assess their current status in Rajkandi Reserve Forest of Moulvibazar, Bangladesh. The study reports a total of 549 angiosperm species belonging to 123 families, 98 (79.67%) of which consisting of 418 species under 316 genera belong to Magnoliopsida (dicotyledons), and the remaining 25 (20.33%) comprising 132 species of 96 genera to Liliopsida (monocotyledons). Rubiaceae with 30 species is recognized as the largest family in Magnoliopsida followed by Euphorbiaceae with 24 and Fabaceae with 22 species; whereas, in Lilliopsida Poaceae with 32 species is found to be the largest family followed by Cyperaceae and Araceae with 17 and 15 species, respectively. Ficus is found to be the largest genus with 12 species followed by Ipomoea, Cyperus and Dioscorea with five species each. Rajkandi Reserve Forest is dominated by the herbs (284 species) followed by trees (130 species), shrubs (125 species), and lianas (10 species). Woodlands are found to be the most common habitat of angiosperms. A total of 387 species growing in this area are found to be economically useful. 25 species listed in Red Data Book of Bangladesh under different threatened categories are found under Lower Risk (LR) category in this study area. -

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The herbarium includes over 9,285 specimens from 238 families (270 fam. in the word) in medicinal plant herbarium, Faculty of Pharmacy, Chiang Mai University. From July 1987 to September 1991, a total of 2,044 species have been collected from Doi Suthep- Pui National Park, some of which are of considerable economic, medicinal and botanical interest. Vascular plants in this national park comprise of 193 of the 228 known families of vascular plants in Thailand, including a new family record for the flora of Thailand (Lardizabalaceae), eleven species new records for Thailand, three emended descriptions, two new combinations, and at least two species, with several others that are probably undescribed and new to science. The lowland, mostly disturbed forests up to 350-950 m. elevation, are of two deciduous facies, viz., dipterocarp-oak and mixed (former teak) forest. Elevations above this to the summit of Doi Suthep (c.1,620 m.) and Doi Pui (c.1,685 m.) are primary evergreen (monsoon) with some residual pine on some of the ridges. There is a distinct dry season (December-May) during which there are fires and many of the lowland species flower and fruit, many become leafless while in the evergreen areas, there is no specific flowering or fruiting season, that is, the phenologies of the plants in this habitat vary according to each species throughout the year. -

Fabaceae INTRODUCTION Rosary pea has been widely used in Florida as an ornamental plant for many years. The native range of rosary pea is India and parts of Asia, where this plant is used for various purposes. The roots of this plant are used to induce abortion and relieve abdominal discomfort. The seeds of this plant are so uniform in size and weight that they are used as standards in weight measurement. The seeds can also be used to make jewelry. Interestingly, one of the most deadly plant toxins, abrin, is produced by rosary pea (Abrus precatorius). Studies have shown that as little as 0.00015% of toxin per body weight will cause fatality in humans (a single seed). Interestingly, birds appear to be unaffected by the deadly toxin as they have been shown to readily disperse rosary pea seed. DESCRIPTION Rosary pea is a small, high climbing vine with alternately compound leaves, 2-5 inches long, with 5 to 15 pairs of oblong leaflets. A key characteristic in identifying rosary pea is the lack of a terminal leaflet on the compound leaves. The flowers are small, pale, and violet to pink, clustered in leaf axils. The fruit is characteristic of a legume. The pod is oblong, flat and truncate shaped, roughly 1½ - 2 inches long. This seedpod curls back when it opens, revealing the seeds. The seeds are small, brilliant red with a black spot. These characteristics give the plant another common name of crab’s eyes. IMPACTS Rosary pea is found throughout central and southern Florida, including Marion, Lake, Palm Beach, and Manatee counties. -

The environmental sensitivity of Miami-Dade County is underscored by the fact that the urban developed area of the County portion lies between two national parks, Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The close relationship of tourism to the preservation of Miami-Dade County's unique native plants, fish, wildlife, beaches and near shore water quality is closely related to the continued success of the County’s tourism industry. and as such preservation So, natural resource preservation in Miami-Dade County has been recognized as an economic as well as environmental issue. The close proximity of an expanding urbanized area to national and State resource-based parks, and over 6,000 acres of natural areas within County parks, presents a unique challenge to Miami-Dade County to provide sound management. In addition, many experts suggest that South Florida will be significantly affected by rising sea levels, intensifying droughts, floods, and hurricanes as a result of climate change. As a partner in the four county Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, Miami-Dade has committed to study the potential negative impacts to the County given climate change projections, and is working to analyze strategies to adapt to these impacts and protect the built environment and natural resources. 2. The County has addressed this is also working to address these challenges by in several ways including working closely with other public and private sector agencies and groups to obtain a goal of sustainability. India has contributed its knowledge of traditional system medicines (Ayurveda and Siddha) to develop herbal medicines with negligible side effects. The World Health Organization has also recognized the benefits of drugs developed from natural products. Abutilon indicum, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Sida acuta and Sida rhombifolia are ethnomedicinal plants of Malvaceae, commonly used in Indian traditional system of medicines. Traditionally these plants were used in the form of extracts/powder/paste by tribal populations of India for treating common ailments like cough and cold, fever, stomach, kidney and liver disorders, pains, inflammations, wounds, etc. The present review is an overview of phytochemistry and ethnopharmacological studies that support many of the traditional ethnomedicinal uses of these plants. Many phytoconstituents have been isolated from the four ethnomedicinal plants and some of them have shown pharmacological activities that have been demonstrated by in vivo and/or in vitro experiments. Ethnomedicinal uses, supported by scientific evidences is essential for ensuring safe and effective utilization of herbal medicines. -

The study aimed to document plant diversity and to identify interesting, endemic, rare and threatened plant species which were considered high conservation value species. A total of 413 species from 82 families were recorded from the study area of which 93 taxa were endemic to Borneo, including 10 endemic to Sabah. These high conservation value species are key conservation targets for any forested area such as ICCA. Proper knowledge of plant diversity and their conservation status is vital for the formulation of a forest management plan for the Batu Timbang area.
