Michael John Courtney Murray nacque ultimo di tre figli il 12 settembre 1904 e fu battezzato pochi giorni dopo nella chiesa cattolica degli Angeli Guardiani a New York, alla presenza dei genitori Margaret Courtney e Michael Murray1. Precursori di una tendenza generale che si manifesterà a partire dagli anni Trenta, quando l‘emancipazione economica indurrà gli immigrati cattolici a spostarsi dai quartieri etnici alle suburbs, e i matrimoni misti non saranno più sconsigliati2, i Murray si sposarono nel 1901 a Manhattan, New York, nella chiesa di St. Francis Xavier. La famiglia si trasferì dopo pochi anni dalla modaiola 21esima strada di Manhattan a Jamaica, quartiere rurale del Queens e terreno di missione per la Chiesa cattolica sin dal 1838. Jamaica Village fu originariamente punto di raccolta per famiglie di agricoltori, operai e negozianti irlandesi; negli ultimi anni dell‘Ottocento si popolò prima di tedeschi (la parrocchia della famiglia Murray, Presentation of Blessed Virgin Mary, fu fondata nel 1886 proprio da immigrati tedeschi) e poi di italiani e polacchi3 grazie alle linee ferroviarie costruite sul finire del secolo che collegavano l‘area con Manhattan e Brooklyn4. La comunità cattolica statunitense degli inizi del Novecento rispecchiava in larga parte l‘evoluzione e la composizione del piccolo villaggio di Jamaica: era caratterizzata da un‘ampia varietà di etnie, giunte negli Stati Uniti in due ondate migratorie (una prima nel periodo 1780-1860, originaria dell‘Europa settentrionale e occidentale; la seconda tra il 1860 e il 1920, dall‘Italia e dall‘Europa orientale) che ne determinarono la compagine dei gruppi e del clero5. Il confronto e lo scontro tra la cultura cattolica e quella protestante dominante fu inoltre esacerbato dalle dinamiche dello sviluppo urbano e dell‘industrializzazione: nonostante i cattolici tendessero a riunirsi in quartieri omogenei secondo la nazionalità di provenienza, l‘incremento dei tassi di mobilità, la collocazione delle industrie nelle periferie urbane e, in parte, le migliori condizioni economiche li portarono a spostarsi dai quartieri cittadini ai sobborghi periferici, tra cui, appunto, quello di Jamaica. I più alti livelli di educazione, inoltre, furono causa e stimolo di una più partecipata vita sociale e politica, di cui i partiti politici furono il naturale bacino da cui avanzare istanze di tutela della propria comunità, della propria lingua, della propria storia di origine. Per parte protestante, all‘inizio del XX secolo la preoccupazione per l‘impatto che le nuove ondate migratorie avrebbero potuto avere sull‘impianto democratico, soprattutto in termini di assimilazione dei grandi numeri di immigrati, provocarono un ampio dibattito sull‘influenza della cultura predominante sulle culture di origine, ma anche e soprattutto sull‘influsso di queste ultime sulla cultura protestante statunitense6. I flussi migratori precedenti erano considerati simili per ―sangue e ideali politici, educazione civica e impostazione economica‖: l‘assimilazione di inglesi, tedeschi, danesi e svedesi fu più semplice e rapida. I nuovi flussi erano invece il problema del tempo, concomitanti ai profondi cambiamenti della società legati al processo di urbanizzazione, alle manifestazioni di corruzione politica e al conflitto di classe. Non solo: l‘incremento dei matrimoni etnicamente misti infransero il vincolo di appartenenza nazionale, creando nuove sfide per i cattolici, il cui legame tra cultura di origine e esperienza religiosa era particolarmente saldo7. La historia de la gestación y el establecimiento del catolicismo doscientos años atrás, en lo que hoy son los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, especialmente en el Norte y concretamente en Nueva York, estuvo marcada de heroísmo por las enormes pruebas, rechazos, humillaciones y oposiciones que tuvo que enfrentar, los grandes sacrificios y luchas que tuvo que dar, como consecuencia del anti catolicismo intolerante, violento y perseguidor imperante en la época, protagonizado por otras iglesias cristianas provenientes de Europa y establecidas aquí con anterioridad. Han transcurrido dos siglos desde que John Carroll, (1735 – 1815) primer obispo católico en los Estados Unidos, pidiera a Roma la creación de nuevas diócesis y que, respondiendo a esta solicitud pastoral, el Papa Pío VII erigiera por Decreto a Nueva York como Diócesis en abril 8 de 1808, junto a Filadelfia, Boston y Bardstown. Estas cuatro diócesis se desprenden de la única iglesia particular fundada por entonces en la República de los Estados Unidos nacidos después de 1776: la Diócesis de Baltimore que, a su vez, había sido fundada como tal en 1789 convirtiéndose así, en la primera Diócesis de la República nacida en 1776 y hoy, reconocida como la sede primada de los Estados Unidos. Richard Luke Concanen, un fraile dominico irlandés fue nombrado primer Obispo de Nueva York. Pero camino de Roma (donde pasó gran parte de su vida) a Nueva York falleció en la ciudad de Nápoles.     Displaced "Pan-Americans" and the Transformation of the Catholic Church in Philadelphia, 1789-1850 HE REVEREND JOHN HUGHES TOLD A GREAT STORY about the construction of the Roman Catholic church of St. John the Evangelist in Philadelphia. Hughes, the project's major fundraiser, St. John's first pastor, and later archbishop of New York, related that his announcement in 1830 of the plan to build a grand new cornerstone of Catholic life garnered only a lukewarm response from his congregation. Days went by before he received his first donation, from a humble ser- vant, who delivered to the priest a few precious cents from her meager wages. From that moment on, Hughes "never had a doubt of the success" of the building project.1 This lovely anecdote, redolent of New Testament teachings, burnishes one of the principal and lasting images of the Catholic Church in the United States, but it obscures crucial aspects of St. John's construction and the Catholic Church's broader institutional development. From the 1780s to the mid-nineteenth century, a small group of "Pan-Americans," men and women with extensive ties to Latin America and the Caribbean, played a determinative role in the church's transformation in Philadelphia and, as a result, the nation as a whole. Some, their lives thrown into disarray by internecine warfare and eco- nomic upheaval, came to Philadelphia for short periods of time, while others made a permanent home in the city. Here, they met residents with an existing network of economic, political, and cultural ties to the region. This group became embroiled in an intense confrontation over the future of American Catholicism.

White, Ph.D. At the 1884 Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, the US Catholic bishops commissioned a national prayer book titled the Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity and the widely-known Baltimore Catechism. This study examines the Manual’s genesis, contents, and publication history to understand its contribution to the Church’s teaching efforts. To account for the Manual’s contents, the study describes prayer book genres developed in the British Isles that shaped similar publications for use by American Catholics. The study considers the critiques of bishops and others concerning US-published prayer books, and episcopal decrees to address their weak theological content. To improve understanding of the Church’s liturgy, the bishops commissioned a prayer book for the laity containing selections from Roman liturgical books. The study quantifies the text’s sources from liturgical and devotional books. The book’s compiler, Rev. Clarence Woodman, C.S.P., adopted the English manual prayer book genre while most of the book’s content derived from the Roman Missal, Breviary, and Ritual, albeit augmented with highly regarded English and US prayers and instructions.
