Osman Washington, D.C. 2015 A Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity: A Neglected Catechetical Text of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore John H. Osman, Ph.D. Director: Joseph M. White, Ph.D. At the 1884 Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, the US Catholic bishops commissioned a national prayer book titled the Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity and the widely-known Baltimore Catechism. This study examines the Manual’s genesis, contents, and publication history to understand its contribution to the Church’s teaching efforts. To account for the Manual’s contents, the study describes prayer book genres developed in the British Isles that shaped similar publications for use by American Catholics. The study considers the critiques of bishops and others concerning US-published prayer books, and episcopal decrees to address their weak theological content. To improve understanding of the Church’s liturgy, the bishops commissioned a prayer book for the laity containing selections from Roman liturgical books. The study quantifies the text’s sources from liturgical and devotional books. The book’s compiler, Rev. Clarence Woodman, C.S.P., adopted the English manual prayer book genre while most of the book’s content derived from the Roman Missal, Breviary, and Ritual, albeit augmented with highly regarded English and US prayers and instructions.

Landmarks Preservation Commission January 30, 2007, Designation List 385 LP-2164 ST. ALOYSIUS ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 209-217 West 132nd Street, Manhattan. Built 1902-04; William W. Renwick, architect; New York Architectural Terra Cotta Co., terra cotta; Grueby Faience Co., glazed brick. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1938, Lot 124. On September 21, 2004, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 1). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Sixteen people spoke in favor of designation, including U.S. Congressman Charles B. Rangel, the pastor of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, former Landmarks Preservation Commission Chairman Gene A. Norman, and representatives of the Archdiocese of New York, City Councilman Bill Perkins, the Municipal Art Society of New York, Historic Districts Council, New York Landmarks Conservancy, Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America, and Landmarks West! One speaker opposed designation. In addition, the Commission has received letters in support of designation from State Senator David A. Paterson and Manhattan Community Board 10. The Commission had previously held a public hearing on the church on June 14, 1966. Summary The richly ornamented, polychrome St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church was built in 1902-04 to the design of William W. Renwick based on Italian Gothic prototypes, an unusual source of stylistic inspiration for buildings in New York City. Named after the 16th-century Italian St. Aloysius Gonzaga, the church was organized in 1899 by Rev.

  • Bio Fr. John Hamel
A Worthy and Capable Clergyman Father John J. Hamel (1850-1912) First resident Pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church | Olean, New York A Worthy and Capable Clergyman Rev. John J. Hamel (1850-1912) __________ Jennifer L. Kane 2016 !2 Preface hen Father John J. Hamel died in 1912, Olean witnessed the largest W funeral ever held in the city up to that point in its history. Incredibly, this beloved religious leader has been almost forgotten by subsequent generations. It is safe to say that most parishioners today know nothing of Fr. Hamel beyond his name inscribed on the old graphic scroll on the west wall near the St. Joseph side altar. Unfortunately, somewhere between the generation of parishioners a century ago and the generation of parishioners today, our corporate memory has lost touch with this revered pastor who made such a remarkable impression not only on Olean’s Catholic community but the entire region. It is hoped this biographical sketch of our first resident pastor will change that. This peek into our parish history is part of a work in progress to document a comprehensive early history of the Church of St. Mary of the Angels—from its pioneer start-up days served by traveling diocesan missionary priests in the mid-nineteenth century, to the Consecration of the new church in 1919 with the various celebrations of historic events tied to the life of the church in the ensuing decades. To that end, this publication focusing on Rev. John Hamel’s ministry in Olean may be considered a single chapter in an examination of this fascinating parish nestled in the Enchanted Mountains of New York’s Southern Tier.
