It contains information relevant to resource management and scientific research. The spectacular cliffs, arches, spires, temples, and An abandoned uranium mine and three abandoned oil colorful strata of Zion National Park record changing wells within park boundaries may pose issues in the environmental conditions through 275 million years of future. Archaeology Press, Simon Fraser For more than 14,000 years Glass Buttes, one of the largest obsidian sources in Oregon, has been a source of high quality toolstone for Native American flintknappers. Glass Buttes’ obsidian is of high quality, abundant, and in many colors. The colors include translucent and banded black, red, mahog- any, gold sheen, silver sheen, gray-green banded, rainbow, and banded or mottled multi-color combinations. It is found in large blocks or boulders, some weighing more than 100 pounds. Figure 1 shows many of these Oregon obsidian source sites. Because of the quality of Glass Buttes obsidian, it has been prized among Native American and First Nation people of North America. Obsidian from this source contin- ues to be coveted by present-day knappers.

Geological Survey, Flagstaff, Arizona 1994 1 INTRODUCTION The Moriah Knoll 7.5' quadrangle is located in northern Mohave County, northwestern Arizona. The quadrangle is about 48 km south of the Arizona/Utah State line and about 56 km southwest of Colorado City, Arizona, the nearest settlement (fig. 1). Elevations range from about 1,426 m (4,680 ft) in the northwest corner of the quadrangle to 2,007 m (6,585 ft) at Berry Knoll in the south-central edge of the quadrangle. Access to the area is by improved dirt road locally referred to as the Temple Trail. The Temple Trail branches south from the Navajo Trail. The Navajo Trail extends to Colorado City, Arizona (fig. 1). Several unimproved dirt roads lead from the Temple Trail to various locations within the quadrangle area. Travel on the Temple Trail can be done with 2 wheel drive vehicles, all other roads require a high-clearance vehicle, or 4 wheel drive in wet weather. The area is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, including about 4 sections belonging to the state of Arizona.

Box 821, Cody, WY 82414 ____________________ ABSTRACT - Paleontological resources occur throughout the Paleozoic and Mesozoic formations exposed in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Isolated research on specific geologic units within Bighorn Canyon has yielded data on a wide diversity of fossil forms. A comprehensive paleonotological survey has not been previously undertaken at Bighorn Canyon. Preliminary paleontologic resource data is presented in this report as an effort to establish baseline data. ____________________ INTRODUCTION ighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (BICA) consists of approximately 120,000 acres within the Bighorn Mountains of north-central Wyoming and south-central Montana B (Figure 1). The northwestern trending Bighorn Mountains consist of over 9,000 feet of sedimentary rock. The predominantly marine and near shore sedimentary units range from the Cambrian through the Lower Cretaceous. Many of these formations are extremely fossiliferous. The Bighorn Mountains were uplifted during the Laramide Orogeny beginning approximately 70 million years ago. Large volumes of sediments, rich in early Tertiary paleontological resources, were deposited in the adjoining basins. This report provides a preliminary assessment of paleontological resources identified at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. STRATIGRAPHY The stratigraphic record at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area extends from the Cambrian through the Cretaceous (Figure 2). The only time period during this interval that is not represented is the Silurian.
