  • PTI and the Sport Ethic
    Brian P. Moritz PTI and The Sport Ethic In 1991, Robert Hughes and Jay Coakley first defined a key concept in the study of the sociology of sport. After reading numerous books about sports stars and talking with coaches and athletes, the two defined four traits of what they call The Sport Ethic. These are the four principles they found that elite athletes adhere to and define themselves by. They also found that this ethic was a leading cause in what they call “deviant overconformity” among athletes, that can lead to long-term health problems, the use of performance-enhancing drugs, and other negative behaviors. While the notion of deviant overconformity has been widely studied by sports sociologists, The Sport Ethic itself has not been the focus of much research. And there has been little in-depth research into the role sports media plays in the establishment of The Sport Ethic. The purpose of this pilot study is to examine how the mainstream sports media helps promote and perpetuate The Sport Ethic. Specifically, it will use a qualitative content analysis on a constructed week of Pardon the Interruption (PTI), a talk show on ESPN, to see how the construct of The Sport Ethic is reflected in the stories discussed and how they are discussed. PTI is a daily talk show that airs on ESPN, the all-sports cable network. Hosted by Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon, longtime friends and sports journalists, the show features the two arguing about the top sports stories of the day. As one of the most popular shows on ESPN , the primary outlet for television sports news in the United States, and one that is hosted by two veteran sportswriters who formerly worked for one of the country’s main newspapers, PTI can be considered an accurate reflection of mainstream sports news and mainstream sports media culture.

Crider All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT The radio industry is fighting to stay relevant in an age of expanding media options. Scholarship has slackened, and media experts say that radio’s best days are in the past. This dissertation investigates how today’s radio announcer presents him/herself on the air as a personality, creating and performing a self that is meant for mass consumption by a listening audience. A participant observation of eleven different broadcast sites was conducted, backed by interviews with most key on-air personnel at each site. A grounded theory approach was used for data analysis. The resulting theoretical model focuses on the performance itself as the focal point that determines a successful (positive) interaction for personality and listener. Associated processes include narrative formation of the on- air personality, communication that takes place outside of the performance, effects of setting and situation, the role of the listening audience, and the reduction of social distance between personality and listener. The model demonstrates that a personality performed with the intent of being realistic and relatable will be more likely to cement a connection with the listener that leads to repeated listening and ultimately loyalty and fidelity to that personality.

Tuition, room, board and books were compensation enough. And even if, increasingly, it wasn't enough and virtually every kid who accepted a scholarship was in the red before Christmas of his freshman year, the notion of pay-for- play was at best a logistical nightmare. Where exactly would the money come from? How could you pay college football players but not baseball players or members of the women's field hockey team? And how in the world would you pay men in a way that wouldn't violate Title IX? [+] Enlarge Ronald Martinez/Getty ImagesThe UConn basketball team's run to the NCAA championship generated millions for the NCAA and the university. So you know what caused me to do a 180 on the issue? That $11 billion deal -- OK, it's $10.8 billion to be exact -- between the NCAA and CBS/Turner Sports for March Madness between 2011 and 2024. We're talking $11 billion for three weekends of television per year. On top of that, there's a new four- year deal with ESPN that pays the BCS $500 million. So, if those two deals were worth, say, a combined $10 billion instead of $11.3 billion, would the games not be televised? Would the quality of the broadcasts or the coverage or the staging of the events be somehow diminished? What if people in the business of money took $1.3 billion off the top, invested it, sheltered it and made it available to provide a stipend to college athletes, how could anybody stand on principal and argue against paying the people who make the events possible in the first place? Let me declare up front I wouldn't be the slightest bit interested in distributing the funds equitably or even paying every college athlete.
